Animal Cruelty penalties...

United States
November 29, 2009 10:19pm CST
I was watching Animal Cops and I just can't stop thinking about something... There was one case on the show where a man beat 3 of his cats SO bad that two had to be euthanized; the third was thankfully nursed back to health...but it was critically hurt when he arrived at the SPCA shelter. They found the man who'd done it, and he was giving 23 months probation....that's it! No jail time, no fine....just probation...he viciously BEAT two cats to death, and left the 3rd for dead... That is a violent person and I don't think his penalty was enough...does anyone else think animal cruelty cases should have stricter consequences?

In a word, yes. It must first be determined if there was intentional abuse in each case, of course, but if found to be guilty, I'm definitely inclined toward harsh punishment, & probably some psychiatric counseling! Maggiepie END VIOLENCE ON EVERYONE...PERIOD!

I totally understand! I don't like the goriness of these shows, but I watch the shows because I like to see the happy stories and I like to see the abusers get what's coming to them! Thanks for joining in this discussion at all!!

Lily, nothing against you, but please, I really can't stand to even read about gory details of animal abuse. I would do anything to stop it. I was afraid to come to this discussion, & I guess I was right. It actually makes me physically ill to hear about such things. I just wanted to know if he was punished enough (no), & see if I could help promote proper punishment. I'm going to stop reading (& answering) now, as I'm probably going to cry & then throw up. Sorry I'm so squeamish. Nothing that's your fault. Sorry. Sorry. Maggiepie END VIOLENCE ON EVERYONE...PERIOD!

You should know how I feel about it. I about yanked a child around because he kicked at a cat - no I didn't lay a hand on him, but his mother sure did! AFTER I yelled at him. Mind you, the ONLY thing I yelled was "NO!" but I'm sure even since he didn't speak English, he understood that word (same in Spanish after all.)

I know! And people don't seem to keep that in mind when they give out their penalties!

Oh when I see kids being mean to animals...ugh! My nieces can't always be trusted around animals (they've been better, but they used to be mean to our animals). They would get a good swat and be sent to time out. I still hear stories about them being mean to their cats at their house and I get so mad! They need to learn young, and maybe we can keep the number of animal abuse cases down.

Hi Lily that is the Problem that they get let of lightly, they should be sent to Jail and serve a sentence they have killed But again in the eyes of the Law the way they think it is not the same because it was an Animal, wrong it is just as bad to kill a pet they are living beings, they feel pain, and it is murder to kill a Cat Dog or any other Pet This makes me so angry

i think the courts should send them to jail then pass the word around their child molesters and let the inmates serve them justice. what goes around comes around

Ooo! Good idea! That will get him the beat down that he gave to those cats. And to anyone else that can hurt such a defenseless, innocent creature!

I can't agree with you more Lily that stiffer fines and jail time should be made for anyone who abuses an animal to the point it's put down. Sometime earlier this year around March there was a case of this 14 year old boy who hit and abused a grey cat named Dusty...he even had the balls to have his abuse on the cat filmed and he placed it on Youtube...thousands that saw the video were shocked and through the magic of the internet someone was able to trace him through his Facebook profile...he was caught but never heard what happened to him...he had rich parents who probably got him off for any fines or jails time and probably only got a slap on the wrist and told never to abuse an animal again. Dusty is okay...he was taken by the SPCA and rehabilitated and think he was adopted Here's a story about Dusty http://www.kenny-glenn.net/

UGH! I am so sick of how kids are growing up these days. It is so easy to HATE kids now, and that's just not right. But kids can be so awful. If his parents are rich I'm sure they did get off easy, the little jerks. It says his brother did it too, I wonder if he's older or younger. I see they have the videos on that site...I'm curious but I don't know how upset they'll make me. Did you watch the videos? Are they graphic?

I just read some more on the site; it turns out the kids did go to court but...yeah I didn't see what happened to them. BUT..the site has the entire families information...and I'm not sure I think that's right. They have their home and work addresses and I don't think they should have that up! I'm glad both kitties or okay now!

Hell yes! I think it has been proven that most of these people that are capable of doing this to animals are going to escalate to humans. So why don't they try to nip it in the bud? They should at least have to get counseling of some sort. Heck, If you really want to know what I think... I am more apt to take the eye for an eye attitude.. But then I don't have a love for people anyway.

It seems only fair to me! lol. It's exactly what he did to the kitties--actually, one of the animal officers was a pretty big guy....I'm sure he would be happy to do it! lol

I 100% agree that animal cruelty case should have more severe penalties. The case you describe is sick, and this sicko should have got a jail term. There is ample evidence that people who are cruel to animals, often turn out being abuses themselves. Slowly but surely the media and community are getting their message across. That we will not stand for it, nor will we put up with pathetic punishments.

It's sickening isn't it Lily? You and I both know he deserves a harsher punishment and so does the guy who did it. He would be laughing because there was no real punishment for his crime. Many people will say..."so what" It's only a cat" but that's the whole point to me...it's a creature who cannot defend itself against a brutish human. This man should be flogged till his flesh is hanging in bloody strips from his body and his bones are broken. I'm a pacifist by nature but if a person is cruel to animals I will think the worst of them. I will curse them and hope Mother Nature is listening.

Animal Cruelty penalties is really loser. If I were the one who organized it they will be put on jail. Animals should be respected too, that man is lowering his level on animal, animals like cats can't hurt people unless they are being hurt by them. He is a fool. It should have a stricter law for this, no wonder people keeps on hurting the animals because the consequences is just low. How i hate that news. I feel sad for the cats.

I completely agree. The penalties for these sickos should be more severe.Just giving them a slap on the rest does nothing. These people should also be put into the humane society system so these people can never adopt, or own pets. If they try to liscense a pet they should automatically be fined and the pet should immediatly be removed from the home. It is so awful that people can act like this towards their pets.

I think the show did say something about him not being able to be around animals for 10 years...but I don't really see that as any kind of penalty for him. Obviously he doesn't care about animals anyways. That isn't really a punishment for an animal abuser.

Yes I do! Animals and children are defenseless and the law should come down hard on anyone who intentionally abuses them. I also believe that anyone who abuses a pet is capable of abusing another human being and along with jail time, they should be forced into a mental health program.

I always feel like the animal officers really care, but they aren't the one's who make the laws (I'm sure some feel the same way we do). I would be an animal cop if I thought I could handle it. I would probably cry at every case and get mad at people...so I'm not sure that would be the right move for me. But I really want to help animals!

Hi Lily. I think that is disgusting. Personally I am not a lover of pets but I would never harm them. Even the pets we have had where treated as part of the family. It seems like animals have less rights than humans and some cruelty cases are so severe it's nauseating to watch. I remember seeing a video clip on the net once where in some country in the East they were skinning animals alive and throwing them on a pile to die. People have little respect for animals and harsher penalties should be enforced. Cruelty, be it to animals, children or women, should be treated with higher priority.

YES I believe they be given HEAVY consequences, those insane persons who abuse pets MUST be given stricter penalties..especially those who kill animals that are almost endangered or close to extinction species.. Animals are made by GOd, they must be given the freedom to be treated also by respect and care.. Without them, our nature will be in disaster, aside the fact they greatly contribute to the biological food chain cycle IT is so sad that others kill animals even for food consumption like dogs, crocodiles, and many more..except for the pattern food consumption on meats like chicken, beef and pork.. These animal cruelties do happen all over the world and maybe because of the effect of poverty and food scarcity that is why they are so depressed to kill any animals just for survival. If only the government per country will have a STRICT IMPLEMENTING LAW concerning these animal cruelty? at least there would be less abuse and there will I believe that Justice do really prevails and fair for all living beings either HUMAN or Animals.. Let us hope and pray for that they will be alarmed and have the conscience to initiate themselves to MAKE a GOOD BILL/ LAW for those who make VIOLATIONS on ANIMALS.

I run a breed list rescue here in Georgia and we get dogs that are used in fighting all of the time. Most of the owners are either fined or spend a 30 day stint in jail. These dogs have almost no ears, horribly beaten faces and are hard to find homes for since people have such a bad stigma towards them. We own 2 pit bulls and 1 Labrador ourselves but, rehabilitate and re home over 75 dogs a year. They are really great animals, and the people forcing these dogs to fight should be penalized more drastically IMHO. Anyone that can do that to an animal needs to be used as an example for others thinking of it.

Yes I think that harsher penalties are needed for people who harm animals. We humans are only animals so why should penalties be harsher for someone who kills or seriously injures a human than if they do it to a cat or dog? I think they should get they same treatment that they get if they were to commit these acts to a human!

That is just so sad. Nothing gets me more upset than careless parents and careless petowners. A life is a life no matter animal or human- if this person had harmed people that way, his consequences would be far worse. I think its so wrong that there's such a big difference in penalties between human and animal abusers.
