How long have you been on the internet...main uses? Changes in uses?

Hello all. This year makes 10 years that I have been an internet user. It took a while to "get the hang" of it, and my first experiences were with newsgroups, e-mail exchanges, and a few of the chat rooms. Also, I loved exploring and doing research on the web. These days, I use the internet still for research, and I love how much I'm able to learn about other people and cultures, via spots like Mylot. I can shop online and do banking online, too, and keep in touch with relatives near and far. I can download music, which I love, too. It has also become a main source of income for me. Chat rooms...I have not been in one for years now. As the internet has grown, so has my ability to reach out to others across the globe! What a great thing that is. How about you? How long have you been an internet user? Have you changed the way you use it over the years/months? What do you use it for most these days? Karen

Hello Peace. I have been using the internet for over 9 years now. I love having the computer to do research for things I want to learn. I use it for email too. I am looking for ways to earn on the internet. That is why I joined my lot was to learn how to earn more money on the internet.I learned how to repair my own computer through the internet. I used to go into chat rooms but that was before I got married. That was almost 3 years now.

You're welcome :) The places other than MyLot that I use for earning an income are the writing sites...for articles, and my blogs and web sites. I do hear Neobux, I believe it is, mentioned on here a lot. And I don't remember which mylot users, but some have blogs that list the earning sites. They will tell you which are scams and which are truly legit. Karen

Hello Freeman. Nine years...a long time, and it keeps changing and improving, yes? Research for the work I do is invaluable, so I also use it a lot for that. I also gave up chat rooms years ago...congratulations on your marriage :) Take care and keep enjoying the internet. Thank you for sharing the ways you use it. Karen

Oh yeah, i talked to an old friend on instant messenger every day for years to but he & ebay are out of my life now. About all i do now is mylot, i never have ventured out much like i should have. I am on facebook but don't do much w/it. I know it is alot of company to me having a computer.

Hi Jo :) Another long-time user...15 years! That is great. I didn't know you used to have a store on Ebay. So did my youngest sister for a while to sell baby clothes. I've never tried that. Like you, I feel that the internet is not only a valuable tool for me, but a great deal of company. It's interesting to meet and learn from people all over the world :) Karen

I love antiques, but whoa! That is a long way to ship a mirror, and yes, I can see where running an antique store would become very hard. I could not do it even today. Fibromyalgia, etc. But I bet it was a joy while you did do it :)) xoxo Karen

I have been an savvy Internet user for five years now. In the past before then, I did not care for the Internet. When I decided to stay home full-time with my kids that is when I started using the Internet. I discovered that there was many free money making opportunities that were of interest to me. I then started being on the Internet more and more.

Hello Cream. The internet does grow on a person, yes? Especially if we are home each day, and as you said, have found ways to earn or supplement our incomes! It is truly a valuable tool in many ways. Enjoy... Karen

Hello Sharuizi. I cannot speak for Cream, but the earning sites I use, other than MyLot aren't PPC or survey sites, but rather the writing sites. Associated Content Helium Textbroker Constant Content Those seem to do the best for me. I also have blogs and a few websites, but they earn less overall than the writing sites. Karen

I've been use Internet in almost 12 years now, karen. But as you said the technology is more advancing as it's not like in the past. We encounter many exciting things over the internet. I didn't yet close to download anything, do banking online, buying online. Because my focus then is to play online games and do chating. Even do I have a computer shop then I never tried all the stuff you said here. I do some research then because of the business that I have but not really a pure leanings because those are not minds. When my business down I tried myself to eliminate my frustration and depression looking for something that was ease that disappointment. I am addicted to play online games. Until I realize that there is no impossible on the net. So, I decided to search for a jobs and I learn about online jobs. I tried it and looking it good. Until I continuously doing it right, now. This is a good thing of the Internet, karen. Well, nice to participate in your discussion again. Have a nice day!

Hello Aerous :) I hope you are well? 12 years is a long time, and the internet has changed a lot in that time. I used to love to play games and chat online, too, in the beginning, and then so many other options to ease life or earn money came along, as well as to keep in close touch with family and friends. So yes, as the internet changes, so does how we use it. Thank you for taking part :) Karen

Hi Karen, It's my 16th year in using computer and being exposed to internet usage. I learned a lot within this period. I developed my skills in preparing powerpoint presentations for training, lay-outing of reports, newsletters and manuals. I became comfortable in using word, excel and other programs. Yes even chatting is fun to do plus the other social networking sites and now online earning and mylot is one. Computer and internet usage is more on work for me.

Hi Ms...16 years. Well that makes you a veteran user, for sure! I cannot think of a workplace today, from simple to complex, that does not have a computer. I use Word for documents and some of my writing, and love it. And yes, chatting here on MyLot is great. It's been a long time since I've been in actual chat rooms or done instant messageing, but I can remember when they were all the rage. Like you, other than MyLot, I use it mainly for working purposes. Karen

I have been online since 2000. My partner has been online for much longer, since the internet was in it's infancy. I am not online as much anymore. A few years ago, we used to work from home, and were online a lot, in between calls we would do surveys, online activism, research, webpage creation and so forth. After we got jobs outside of the home, I still was online a lot, just not as often. I mainly chatted a lot with online buddies, played on social networking sites, researched and downloaded. Now, time is more rare, there is less that interests us to download, and I don't really have online friends anymore, so internet usage has went down a lot.

Hi Idealist. Almost a whole decade for you then. Great! My internet usage, unlike yours having decreased, has increased, since we've done the reverse. Where I used to work outside the home, I now work online. I seldom chat or IM any more, but when I first got the internet, that and downloading music or playing games was all the rage, although I have always, and still do, use it for research. Karen

Hello Happy. Our library has a number of computers now, too, and students as well as others make good use of them. They didn't have them back when I was in school. Even small children now learn and use computer basics. :) I'm glad you're enjoying mylot. It's so full of nice people and a great place to learn many things. Karen

Had a Kaypro with a modem in the late 80's I was a regular with some BB's in Tallahassee Florida at the university. Then in the early 90's with Prodigy* then I wandered to the internet. Would say I started the WWW about 1997ish.

I've been an internet user for over ten years now as well. When I first started using the internet it was all about the chat rooms. Then, I started college and it became a way for me to do some research for my classes. And then I found forums of expectant mothers like myself and that was the network of friends that I had when I was pregnant. Then there was and still is digital scrapbooking, I share my pages online. I also attend weekly chats with some of the other scrapbookers and now I've added making money on the internet as well.

Oh yes, Dorann, I do remember the chat rooms and IMs and such. It has changed so much in the past decade, and for the better for me! I've never known much about digital scrapbooking, but do enjoy the "manual" kind. It sounds very interesting! Karen

Before, it was mainly for academic purposes. Our internet then was just prepaid cards, so it is slow. After DSL was connected, I started social networking sites, online games, downloads, and stuff, but still the acdemic stuff is there. Now, I got bored on those sites, and now I only use it through earning online, online shopping, and also academic.

Hi Kafueenu. Oh yes, I remember the slowness of dial up, but it was what there was so one didn't mind a lot, but simply accepted it. With wireless broadband though, I am now spoiled! You use the internet for variety, I see. Isn't it great? Thank you for your response. Karen

Oh wow, I really feel old now, I've been on the internet since 2000. The main uses that I have used it for has changed from using it for assignments and joke websites as a young person, and now for checking emails, news, research and mylot! The changes that I have seen is the evolution from slow dial up and to now broadband. I am yet to move into the wifi ear. I can still remember the dial up tone. I use to tune in and sing along whilst it dialed away!

I don't just feel old...I AM old, but that's okay :)) We do change the way we use the internet as we mature and as it matures :)) I've done the same...but then it now is capable of letting us all do such a wide variety of things, which I think is great. Oh yes, I remember dial up, too! Broadband wireless is so much faster! Karen

I have been using the internet for a very long time. I miss the days of dial-up connections and waking in early morning just to have the free internet hours. It was pretty cool. I used the net to play online games but I shifted on writing and earning money online recently. I also love to talk with people which I miss most of the time. Too many things to do but there some things that can you sacrifice for... and its worth all of it.

Hi Chadog :) Welcome to MyLot! I think all of us tend to turn on our computers first thing when we get up :) I like to see the news and check e-mails before moving on to other things. It's great being able to earn online, yes? I'm glad to have discovered that, and I'm sure you are, too. Thank you for sharing how you use the internet. Karen

I think I have been on the Internet for 11 or perhaps 12 years - can't quite remember, but at first it was through dial-up, which was very slow and I would never have been able to work all the sites I work these days. I used it for nearly everything. Research, shopping, business, blogging and maybe other things like downloading programs but not much music, because I haven't got my computer linked up to my music center. I have made many friends on here that I haven't even met, and probably unlikely to meet, and that is something I find exciting. - Derek

Hello Derek. Ugh, I, too, remember dial up, and compared to broadband, it was indeed pokey. So much time to download anything and everything. Friends, I've found that to be one of the biggest joys of the internet, as you have. Friends from all over the world. It's amazes me still! Thank you for sharing that. Karen

I started using the internet in 1997 which makes it about 12 years that I have been using it. I stated out reading emails, browsing sites and generally wondered how such beauty was created. Then I learned how to chat and also do research for school work. Then came the era of making money online which would never end and then the social networking. The internet has really made a big difference in our lifes, you can shop and adminster your bank accounts from home, listen to great music, watch movies and more. Thank God for the person who created the internet

Hi, tell you the true, I had been used internet for over 10 years. In general, I use internet to get the daily news, attent the live event, get some daily life knowledge, search for something which do not know and need to know right now. I think internet make our life very convenient, and colorful. I do not like to use internet for chatting, I seldom login online chat room, I just can't waste time to say something nouse for me, I thinks most of the chat room are mess-up (it is just my one-sided view, sorry for that). and never use internet to buy something, whhich was widely use nowaday, I just don't want to be cheated by some cheats which are really existing in the network. I think internet will give our life more convenient in the future. Thanks.

Hi Jackie :) I agree about the chat rooms being messed up...even in the past, the nice ones always turned into a lot of ugly fighting. I do not miss them, and I think they have very few visitors these days. Like you, I think the internet has added a lot of convenience and color, interest, and knowledge to our lives :)) And it will continue to grow! Thank you for sharing your uses and opinions on it. Let's see.. I have been an internet user for about 10 years now and my habits have really changed. When my family first got the internet when I was in middle school, it was when Napster was huge and you could pretty much find anything for free. So I always used it for music and to IM. These days though I do a lot of research and use Facebook and Twitter constantly. It helps me keep in contact with people that I know that have moved away. Lately in these hard economic times I have been trying to use the internet to make a little extra money also!
