When you are taking up long journey, do you carry food and water with you?

When I am going out of station, I am afraid of eating out as my digestion system is very delicate. Hence I carry food and water from home. What about you? Do you carry food and water from home for long journeys or do you buy food and water outside and eat?

Hi Buchi, In journeys it is always safe to carry food and water with us. But it depends on the season too if it in summer it is not wise to carry food for long journeys. Our long journey is from Delhi to Kerala and usually we are carrying food for two days and third day we will get food from outside. In case of water we will take it with us as much as we can then there is no option but to get it from outside. I have observed that many people are carrying their own food with them especially if they are going with family.

That is because, now-a-days, the outside food is not cooked properly, oil is used again and again, which is not good for health. Further it is very costly and not stomach filling. That is why many people started taking food and water with them. As you told, if the travelling is for two or three days, we cannot avoid buying food outside for the last part of the journey.

Our home food will be of our taste. Hence no outside food can compete it. I always prefer home food. So thanks my discussion brought nostalgic memories to you.

Though I like all kinds of food, for journey I take tamarind rice (puliyodarai), lemon rice, curd rice (yogurt rice), idli, chapathi (roti) etc. Not all but some of them as per my mood at that time.

I like spicy food. But I never take it to train journey. I prefer light food for journey.

Any long journeys I undertake are either by car or plane, but as we know taking food on planes is now out of the question. When travelling by car I will take a flask of coffee, a bag of crisps, a cereal bar and sometimes a bag of sweets or mints. I never take sandwiches, why I don't know as it would be just as easy. I do not buy from service stations as here in the UK the prices are so expensive it's a joke. A sandwich that you can buy ready made in a shop for a maxium of £2, so nothing fancy, will cost about £4.50. No way am I going to pay that.

I know. In service stations, railway stations and remote road side stores, the prices of commodities are exhorbitant. Even I will take from home, some mixed rices, sandwiches, chocolates, biscuits, soft drinks, butter milk, plain water, chips etc.

Personally, it depends on where I'm going and what I plan to do that determines whether or not I take with me any food or drink. If I don't really know where I'm going or what I plan to do, or what I am doing involves fairly long-distance journeys, I will definitely be sure to pack a few snacks such as crips, chocolate bars and fruit as well as a large bottle of water in case I feel like the, during a journey. Also, I will take all of the above if I am short of money, because food and drink nowadays can be so ridiculously expensive, and sometimes, i just haven't got the money to waste. However, if I'm going somewhere with my friends or family where I know food or snacks will be involved at some point during the day (such as the cinema or going for a meal out) I won't bother taking anything with me except for maybe some money to buy stuff whilst I'm out (although again, this really does depend on whether or not I have the money to do such a thing, as being a student, food budgets can be pretty tight sometimes).

You have very correctly put it in place MrKennedy. True, where it is necessary and budget stress is prevailant, then better take food and water. Even if money is there, if waste expenditure can be avoided, then why not? At the same time, to cinema halls, naturally we will not take food. Have a good day.

I do carry water especially during long journey. And especially during extraneous activities. I also do carry water even during work or school especially when the weather is so hot. But I don't overdrink water because I urinate a lot.

Hi Aunty, Even we also carry food and water when are going out for a long journey with us. In our home my nice and nephews they dont have outside so because of them we carry food, they are very allergic to outside food. They dont even have food in emergency situations also. in that case they land up only having fruits. Thanks for your discussion. Have a great day.

It is always safe to carry food from home. But sometimes, we wish to eat some item from outside. If we take from home, we need not fully depend on outside food.

Very true. Now-a-days, in good trains, we get good stuff to eat. Of course we cannot carry food in flights. No need that way. Have a good day friend.

Since you have problems with digestion, it is really advisable for you to take those stuff along. However, some people, those who don't really like to bring a lot of stuff when traveling, prefer to just buy food and water on their journey. On the other hand, there are those people too who would love to bring food and water for safety reasons. It really depends on the person traveling. If the budget is tight, then taking food with you is a good option. If you're a light traveler, then you could just buy food and water elsewhere.

Rightly said Krackelz. If health is not getting affected, then we can travel light and eat outside.

When I go on a long journey I like to take food to eat and water to drink. The hotter the weather the more water I tend to bring along. I love to travel by train and I quite like travel by bus. I feel sea sick when I am on a boat so I eat and drink before the journey. When I go by plane security don't allow water bottles because of their rules about liquids. Buying food and drinks can be expensive like at airports.

I too like train journeys when compared to bus journey. I carry light food and not spicy one as I am a bit careful about my digestion system. Outside you cannot expect that you will get light food. I think we will get food in plane travel. So we need not carry food.

In most cases, I do not bring any food. I always travel light. So I prefer to eat on the stop over areas of long travels. I also do this since I love food and traveling will give me an idea about different delicacies on the place that I am going. Usually before I travel, I always inquire about things including food and other things that I find useful.

Yes. I hear people saying that this item is good in this station canteen and you get good milk in that station etc. May be if the stomach listens to our likings, we can eat outside with ease.

Hi, It is always better to prepare and carry your home made food, water when you are taking up long journey in a train. It is not at all advisable to buy food from outside in intermediate stations. Howver, nowadays most of the long distance journey trains are attached with Pantry Cars and they serve good food in some of the trains such as Rajdhani, Shatabdi. You can buy it when there is no alternatives to choose. Thanks.Happy journey.

If we are starting from our house, we can carry food. When we go out of station and take up a journey from there, then these pantry cars are very helpful.

Well, if I'm going to travel by plane I'm not allowed to bring liquids from the outside, so I don't bring water. However, I usually bring food to eat while I wait to get into the plane, as I'm an early riser and I tend to go 2 hours before the plane will begin the trip. About bus and train trips, I usually bring a bottle of water, as my throat dries very easily, and usually food too, because I get hungry easily. I like specially carrying muesli or normal cereal bars, as they're pretty handy and nutritious.

I usually take dry rice items or roti and solid side dish, so that they will not spill and easy to carry. I take curd rice (yoghurt) to calm the stomach. What is muesli and cereal bars?

yaah .. i will carry plenty of food depending upon the place i am going to. If minerals water is available at that place i will prefer not to carry not much of foods.. all depends upon the place which i will visit and how long the journey will be...

That is true. It depends upon the place that we are going to visit. But I see to it that even after reaching the destination, some water is left out to manage for some more time.
