A sure way to kill bugs - True story.

In the early twentieth century, a common household pest was the infamous bed bug. Many people tried to rid their homes of these pests but were usually unsuccessful. Imagine the delight of one couple to find in a weekly magazine an advertisement captioned "A sure way to kill bugs". The couple immediately placed an order and waited expectantly. Two weeks later they received in the post a package containing a small wooden hammer and a block of wood. Enclosed was a note that read as follows: "Catch the bug carefully, lay him on the block, then take the hammer and give the lad a knock"!

Give the lad a knock. It is really funny of the directions of the use of the wooden hammer and the block of wood. Yeah, it is true that bed bugs were one of the pests in the twenties centuries, especially in the country.

Hi William, Thanks for commenting and I agree it's funny. The cost was so little that no one was hurt. Blessings.

I am hoping that this was intended as a joke.

Hi Roxie, Thanks for commenting. It actually happened, but the couple I heard about took it as a joke. They had paid only one or maybe two dollars so it was more for fun than what we would call a scam. Blessings.

ha ha ha ha, that is a great idea i think i might eventually try to sell somthing like that "a new revolutionary way to kill all kinds of bugs. spiders, ants, roaches, flys, even bugs no one has ever seen even kill small rodents" a modern varint of that scam a magnet and a small metal hammer with the same instructions. (btw food is a great way to attract bugs to use this tool on .)

hi Pose123 oh my goodness, needed that chuckle and it felt really good too. well that was really practical but first they had to catch the little bugs. as I understand it they were really pretty small. well I will have to tell my son this joke. You really did a neat discussion as you worked in the joke without making it the discussion. unlike one poor poster who made the joke the discussion as mylot admins do delete those. I did warn the person and told her or him that I hoped mylot had overlooked it,. the joke' was funny but it was not buried it was the whole discussion this was done as a story so it is altogether different.

Hi Hatley, Thank you for your comment and I always thought that one was funny. It was clearly meant as a joke because the cost was minimal. Blessings.

They are probably the people who own the resorts I stay in, money making schemes like this are now called scams.

Well it was something to do with their spare time, of course in those days there wasn't much spare time to be had. And the bugs lived on.
