Howdy! MAHESH2008! Nice question. And I'll just simply answer on my own understanding about the "@" sign or symbol with the help of a simple dictionary. Before the computer we got the good old typewriters. The "@" sign is for symbol or abbreviation of the preposition "at". So on the oldies instead typing the "at" on some letters or mail envelope they use the "@". Presently on today modern information technology the "@" sign although its already a technical expressions for email addresses. But the essence still there of the "@" sign is still there on emails, that categorically "addresses the location to what or where the location or domain". The "@" signs are just still expressing locations on emails accounts or addresses. Thanks and Enjoy! myLot!

K..So you are wondering why an @ is used in every email address.. Let me clarify it with an email user_id@gmail.com..In this email address the portion before the @ symbol is to identify the user and the portion after it says which email service provider the user is linked to..It is for a computer server or client to understand or identify the user and email host..So the @ symbol links the user with the email service provider.. I hope that I answered your question...

Hi Mahesh, Actually I was not aware why the symbol is used, I searched in net and find out an answer for you. The symbol ‘@’ was chosen by Tomlinson coz, he wanted a keyboard character that didn’t occur in people’s names. As you know that the '@' symbol is used to distinguished between the user ID in Domain name (like gmail, yahoo, hotmail etc). I got this information from net only, ok.

Hi, MAHESH2008. I am assuming that the @ stands for at. Like in place of dot com perhaps. That would be my only understanding why this symbol is used in an email address.
