While I am christian and I do see the need for people to come together and practice their faiths in a group I am not a big advocate of organized religion. I look around and see all these different denomination of christian faith and it kind of makes me sad that its come to this. What about the teachings that we are all to be as one, or that God doesn't reside in a house or temple but in a people. Its nice to have a place where you can freely worship as you want to but I feel that we have lost something on the way and have traded away real spirituality and being led by the spirit for a routine to fit our daily lives.

Greetings EvanHunter. Imo, that last sentence is mighty powerful. True Christians need to be led by the Holy Spirit (see Romans 8). That would not mean though they would not assemble, but they would indeed gather together. And, of course, I would say the Church is the people, not a building. In regard to various denominations I look at this way--amongst true Christians there is unity. We might not agree on every little thing, but the core of the matter is love that we should have for one another. I'm a Pentecostal (which, btw, is not a denomination but a movement). I belong to a local ministerial group--not the ecumenical type, but a group of pastors that believe in the core beliefs of Christianity. I have great fellowship and blessing with Baptist, Presbyterians, and others. I look at the different denominations of the ones that follow God through Christ as designed to exist by God Himself to reach different people with different mind sets.

Thank you for the reply. Recently I was studying the turn of the century (late 1800's) revivals that spread across the united states and Canada. It reminded me of how things spread in the book of Acts. Of course both mine and your denomination (pentecostal) took hold during that time. Despite their lack of a real church these revivals spread like a wild fire, sometimes on boats, tents, barns or where ever people would gather. I love listening to the stories of what kind of things were happening on the Mississippi and Ohio rivers during this time. Still as I said I feel that we traded comfort of buildings and organizations for letting the spirit really lead us in our walk with God. I agree that its good to have different denominations as long as we don't forget about unity but its better to walk led by the spirit Imo. God does not dwell in buildings made by human hands...

I agree! I forgot mention, I feel within me, the time will come that church buildings will be deemed a burden and not a necessity. We're seeing some of that now in the USA.

Church is just a building as a matter of fact :))) If you used the word having the sense of religion, then let's face it: religion is a political organization who, like any other political organization pretend something else about itself, and is speculating exactly the same social mechanisms and dynamics as politics and is also having the same purpose as politics: power and control of people.

The early christian church wasn't this way everyone had to give an account of their actions. Even Peter was held accountable for entering into a gentiles home. It was more of a group of people who believed alike than they had their own building and organization. Most times they didn't have a place of their own and went where they felt led to go.

Indeed it was. But in the early days of christianity there was no religion, it was only a primordium. It became 'religion' and in the same time it became 'political organization' in the times of Constantine the Great. What happened after, was the evolution of the seed planted by some human minds interested in achieving control of the other humans. And it's the case of every single religion happened on the face of the Earth. When worshiping a divine entity is transforming into a religion, into an institution, it's about control, it's not about the divine entity him/herself

my mother was just talking about this the other day-she was trying to figure out how many branches the church has split off into.i think she gave up for the time being.

Thank you for the reply. I think that's an impossible thing to do as even many different denominations have split apart also and than they split again. So where is the unity in all of it?

Hello! I think that church is an organization. I would say a formal organization. It consists of lots of people and it has an aim. People who are coming together know the aim and they want to gain something from that organization (peace of their lives) So I would formulate it as an formal organization! Have a great day!

Hello Evan. Like you, I've become what might be call "jaded" as far as organized religion goes. I've seen too many contradictions and discrepancies right within the same faith or sect. Heard too many contradictory sermons, yet all supposedly Bible baseed, and personally know too many people who use their "religion" as a license to get away with anything they wish and then, by rote, ask forgiveness. I've also known too many people who use their "religion" as a cover for their bad behavior or to lure in unsuspecting victims, or who use simply because it gives them a better reputation in the business world. I decided long ago to read the Bible for myself. It clearly talks of the "church" in its truest sense as being people, not a building. And it has clearly stated principals as to what constitutes being a true believer in spirit. I do consider myself a Christian, but I now see myself as more "spiritual" than "religious." Karen

Thank you for the reply Karen. I just think about how many different sects and churches their were in Jesus's day and how he didn't attach himself in any of them but started fresh and how the disciples were lead where ever they went by the spirit and they worshiped where ever and spread the gospel where ever they were drawn and when their was differences they gathered and sorted them out right away instead of falling apart. I don't think I have seen that kind of unity anywhere.

I have noticed the same thing as I've read the Bible, that Jesus taught so often wherever he went...often outdoors. :)

For me, Church is people who gathered together to worship God. In my opinion, no religion can saves us only our faith in God. Yes, unfornately a lot of Christians are divided.
