Do you welcome the phone call from office when you are on holiday?

After one year's hard work i realised i have to have a break during the Christmas holiday,(to be honest, that is not my holiday because i am not a Christian)when almost all of our overseas partners are on holidays. Before i left, i well arranged my work to my back-ups and informed all of the concerned people of my abcense during the following three working days. But the first day was still a bad dream. i answered at least ten phone calls from my colleagues, even if some calls are no answer as known in advance, some ones could get the answer from my back-up easily. the whole free-day was ruined by these un-welcomed calls! But as requested by our company, i can not refuse the office calls where ever i am! Do this case often happen to you? what is your feeling when your cellphone rings when you are on holiday? Can you answer the call politely and patiently?

If I get calls from work, its usually to ask me to do an extra shift so,no, I certainly do not welcome such calls! I do, of course, have the option of saying "no" but there are times when I say it and the word "OK" comes out by mistake!!

It depends actually, if the call would mean a request to come to the office and were on vacation on the province, then its a no, no. If the call is only an inquiry about work, then I'll entertain it. But usually there are no calls as all are on vacation and I see to it that all works are done before taking the long break.

Because of the cell phone, we do not have peace even when we are on a vacation or holiday. This happens to me very regularly, and some time I switch off my official mobile phone, so that these pesky calls are avoided. I also have the same instruction, that I must not switch off the official phone, so what do I do. I simply remove the battery. When this is done, the automatic voice, says that the mobile is out of reach.

Hi rameshkumaar, you are so smart to avoid the pesky calls by removing the battery instead of switching off the mobile phone...

Yes, I have to answer the phone. And, I have to keep my cell phone all the time, day and night, weekdays, weekends, and holidays too. The company where I work has businesses in different countries, and the business goes on all the time with the standard times of the countries. So, they may be call during our weekends and holidays too, and we cannot miss the business opportunities.

But our overseas partners seldom call me by cellphone and vise versa. In case there is, it must be a very important and urgent one. If so, i will glad to help.

Let alone on holidays, i get fed up of official calls if it comes after office hours... i am a kind of person who doesn't want to take office burden back to home... so if i get any call may be from clients or customers after my office hours, i get fed up, sometimes i don't even attend them if they are unknown numbers...

Yes, i like to separate the work and personal life clearly, that is, i don't agree to bring personal feelings to the work, and also don't like the work fair interrupts my personal life, that is why i hate the office calls in holiday

Hi,lucky. I'm an engineering, So i need to travel often and finish my job on site. When i received my manager's phone to let me travel on the weekend or my holiday. My plan was disrupted, I felt very depressed. Sometimes my colleagues was called and arranged to do common office affair on the weekend, Whose houses are near the company. There were no overtime charges. My house is far off my company. So i am a lucky bird.:)

Hi Chocalate, being asked to go out for business is rather annoying, if it happens frequently, you should talk with your boss, i think.

I feel exhausted and worried as if some mistake or work is being waiting for me after the holidays are completed or may be inbetween them. I would like to not receive it but have to forcely receive it as its my boss's call and I have to do it as I dont want to get fired for such a small reason.

I know it is somewhat annoying to pick up the phone from the office when you are on the holiday. Yes, I have the similar experience. Sometimes it can really spoil your mood when you have the travel. When I am on my holiday, I don't want to hear from anything from the office. I love China

I can understand your feelings towards the disturbance. In my case,I am a businessman running my own family business and everyday is a working day for me.Even Sundays are devoted for my official works.Since I have no office staffs,I have to look after everything. So,I can't neglect any calls.Compared to me,you can feel satisfied that you can take leave at the least. But I enjoy my business.

Hi Mary, nice to know you. Yes, one way to avoid the annoying phone calls is to power off your cell phone, but we are requested to be available by phone 24 hours no matter where we are, which is stipulated in our HR regulations.
