Did you ride the bus to school?

My parents sent me to a private school starting when I was in K-4. They sacrificed mightily to be able to do that. The public schools in my area were gang ridden (my dad took a pastorship in a very bad part of town). It was a 30 minute drive to the school, not counting the time we had to pick up the other children. I hated riding the bus. I don't know how many times kids would throw up. Usually it was on the way home from school. We'd all draw our knees to our chest so we wouldn't step in it. And when it was our time to exit the bus, we'd climb over each seat to get to the door. I was so glad that I got to change schools when I was in fourth grade. I was able to walk to school after that. Did you guys ride a bus to school when you were children?

I rode the bus to school and it usually took about a hour to get there. The thing was I went a private school too so the buses were like 30 years old. During the winter months the heater would usually go out and it would be so cold riding to school. But my favorite part about riding the bus was that I would sell drinks to kids during the summer, and then I would have some extra money to buy video games :)

i grew up in a small town and there was one central school that most everyone went to so the people that lived a distance away had to be bussed, and i was one of those bussed. i really didnt mind it.

I did, early years. Then I did some in Jr. Hi, but mostly I walked or Dad took me. When it comes to a) standing in the cold waiting for the bus or b) walking in the cold for the same length of time, I would choose to walk. I hated the bus, the kids were mean and rowdy.

I rode the bus from the seventh grade until graduating highschool. I used to get dropped off at school in the moring and then stay at the afterschool program when it was over. I got fed up with the snotty people and started walking home when the weather was good. Once junior high was over I got to choose from like eight different public schools so I chose the one farthest away from all of the mean people and went to a college prep based curriculum school down town. It was awesome but the bus ride took over an hour wich meant I had to wake up at five A.M. to catch my bus at 6:50. I got in the habit of getting rides home with my friends instead of taking the bus home. Or I took a cab or I skipped sometimes.

I rode the bus in Kindergarten and walked to school from first through third grades and again at the end of fifth. In fourth and fifth grades we lived in a foreign country, so I rode the bus to the International school I attended, but because we moved home before school was over, I again walked to finish out the year. In all other grades, I was bused because the schools were regional, covering more than one town's students. I don't remember anyone ever getting sick on the bus. In fact, my mother used to go crazy over the fact that I'd crawl on the floor under the seats when I was in Kindergarten and I'd be so dirty when I got home! LOL

I rode the bus to school almost every day. Once in a great while I would get a ride from my dad if he left for work early. I really didn't like riding the bus. I went to a Catholic school and we had to share the bus with the public school kids. I was pretty much the minority and the public school kids didn't really care for the private school kids. They pretty much left me alone and I kept to myself. Some days it was quite comical....like when someone put gum in a girls hair and then the next day her mother got on the bus and started screaming about how hard it was to get it out. The bus got stuck in a snow bank one day and we were 2 hours late. That was fun too. Once I became a senior, I had my own car and that was great except for the fact everyone who had no car wanted me to pick them up. I would never have traded it for the bus though. It was much better having my own wheels.

I use to have to when we lived a long way from the school and even when we lived close I was always living where I had to be on the bus for a really long time. I actually lived across the street from my school in elementary and I was the last person dropped off. It really wasn't fun for me but I really helped out my mom because it gave her a whole extra hour to be able to work and still be home in time for me to get off the bus. I never got really sick on the bus luckily. I did see a few kids do it though. Usually the bus driver have an extra garbage can just for that use. In high school I was luck to have a bus driver who let me bring my coffee and toast on the bus since I was one of the first to get on to go to school and that left me little time for breakfast. Usually I'd try to do my homework on the bus too.

No, I never did ride the school bus. Our home wasn't but 2 blocks from school so we always walked unless the weather was bad.

I didn’t ride the bus to school because I was lucky enough to be able to walk due to the short distance.Your experience does not sound very nice at all! We live across the road from the school so my daughter does not need a bus either; she is in primary school and if she will end up at the local High School; that is walking distance too so she may avoid the bus again! I have heard of bullying going on in school buses so it dosn't sound like a great journey still...

Luckily, we never had any bullying. The bus driver wouldn't have put up with that.

When I was in high school, we lived in a small, rural community. The school I attended was a regional one, serving several communities, so yes I rode a school bus. The driver was a real 'drill sargent', I don't remember anyone getting sick. They were probably afraid he'd make them walk the rest of the way home. I was lucky in one respect...we were the last ones on and the first ones off on the return trip. My 15 minute trip each way was over an hour for some kids.

A couple of my bus drivers were borderline Nazis. One of them actually made fun of some of the kids.

When I was riding (a long, long, long time ago), bus drivers routinely made fun of kids. I guess the fear of being singled out and publicly picked on was what kept kids in line. One kid had been eating something and dropped crumbs on the floor. So the driver pulled the bus over (on the way home from school), and gave the kid a brush and dustpan...and waited while he cleaned up his mess. I gotta say the driver had gonads the size of Texas, but there was never any trouble on the bus. He really didn't have to worry about the town or school reprimanding him either. He was the only driver for our town...and he owned the bus.

No, we did not take a bus. I walked about three miles with my two elder sisters to the nearest Roman Catholic School. It was a long walk and I used to get so tired sometimes that my eldest sister used to carry me on her back, piggy back style. I have just remembered that memory by writing this and it is a good one. My oldest sister really took good care of me when I was a child. She is 9 years older than me. Thanks for the memory. And Happy New Year

The private school I went to was Christian, but my parents would have looked into a Catholic school if the one I went to didn't work out.

I rode the bus Kindergarden-12th Grade. Hardly anyone ever threw up. Except me one morning during senior year. I managed to get off the bus in time though, and I still don't quite wrong what was wrong with me because I was fine after that. It might have been something I ate. I hated riding the bus at times, because it would get loud or buses would break down or be late, all sorts of wonderful things like that. I remember one time we got our regular bus replaced with some old crusty thing that started leaking propane gas half-way home. So the bus driver goes back to the bus barn and the dispatcher gives us a new bus. Quite literally, a NEW bus. It was shiny and everything, and they had a whole lot full of them. So why we were given the crusty 20 year old bus that leaked propane gas? Yeah, still don't know the answer to that either. But it was good transportation and if I was late to school I never got in trouble because it was always the bus driver's fault. :D

It seemed like at least once a year on the bus ride home we would witness or be involved in some kind of traffic accident. But that is only because people are inconsiderate and or unaware drivers who think that they are the only ones on the road and so they have the right to endanger other people's lives.

No I did not ride the school bus as I lived in town. I would walk to school everyday even when it was snowing or raining outside as we did not live to far from the grammar and junior high school. We only lived about a quarter of a mile from the high school so I also walk there too.

Now that's just gross. Yes, I had to ride the school bus when I was a kid. But not until I was 10. Before that my mom would drop my sister and myself off and pick us up as we didn't live too far from the school, but as we lived on a somewhat steep hill she didn't want us walking it. Sometimes my sister and I would walk it when we stayed over at a friend's house as it was across the street from their house. After I moved to Sacramento I had to take the bus to school. The school was 9 miles away and my mom wasn't about to make the drive back and forth everyday. I don't recall anyone ever throwing up on any of the school buses that I rode on, but I do remember one bus driver being stern, yet fair. If any of the students misbehaved in any way he'd warn them and tell all of us he wasn't going anywhere until they quieted down. Surprisingly that would shut them up and we'd be on our way again in no time. LOL He wasn't my regular bus driver though as I usually took a different bus, but he'd let me ride on his bus every now and then when I went to school with some of the other kids that were on his route. Happy mylotting!

I wanted to add that I moved again when I was in 8th grade. After that I lived close enough to the schools (both junior high and high school) so I just walked it. However, I did change schools in 10th grade and as it was alternative school no buses ran. Part of it was held at the local library, which I walked to mostly. But when I had to go to the school itself my mom was back to having to drive me. LOL Fortunately, I only had to go once a week and only for the first year, if I remember right. After that I did all of my schooling at the library and at home.

I did travel by school bus during my junior high school years only due to it being far away from me, and it was a public school, but for the most part, since my elementary school was fairly nearby, I walked it...also walked to my high school, but goodness never remember kids throwing up all the time...LOL...ewwwwwwww

It probably happened three times a semester, but to me, that is often enough. WAY too many times for my liking. My sister and I were always the second to last to be dropped off, so we had to put up with it throughout the drive.

Hi Ambie, During my scholl days, i used to ride a bike and a tricyle. our school is just near and no need for us to take a bus in going there. sometimes we used to walk in going home so that we can have some snacks along the way. we use our allowance for transportation (going home) to buy snacks. it's also an exercise for us. we walk, we run and play while on our way home. it was fun!
