Job Interview: What's Your Biggest Weakness?

Venezuela
January 6, 2010 3:03am CST
This is often asked during a job interview and I really don't see the point of it. Applicants will always lie about their "weakness". Of course I won't tell you that I that I get sleepy in the afternoons, or that I can't get along with stupid co-workers, or that I often lie about being sick. If you can just answer honestly this question without affecting the interview in any way, what would you say? What's your biggest weakness?

I've been in countless job interviews that when the question about strength and weakness comes I have a standard answer. I know my answer is a lie, but I've said it so many times that I now don't even flinch when I say it. My answer: My strength is that I am very detailed. My weakness is that I am very detailed. Now, if you were my interviewer and you heard that answer, and you got confused, then I know I've answered it correctly!

That is a nice technique. It could be apllied with other statements as well. for example: My strength is that I am a perfectionist. My weakness is that I am a perfectionist and so on. It is good to take a controversial quality of the character and use it as both strenght and weakness Nice

I had admission interviews last time for two IIMs (Indian Institute of Management) but luckily i was not asked this question there. But i was asked this question in one other interview and i replied that my biggest weakness is that 'I procrastinate a lot and do the work at the lost moment' and the interviewer ask me that this is a bad thing for the studies but to that i replied that 'i utilize this time to prepare various blueprints for the work to be done and i select the most efficient way of doing it'. :)

I didn't use exactly this language of-course. the thing i meant to say was that the time that i waste by procrastination, i use that time judiciously. in this way, even ur weakness becomes a strong point.

I believe that being asked of your weakness should be removed from the list of questions during job interview. Who would tell the truth of one's weakness. The only way to answer that question is by lying.

And sometimes people give answers that are not really weaknesses like "I'm a perfectionist.." or "I'm a workaholic.." just to suck up and kiss as$

Hi Nocturn, I can answer this honestly because I have learnt what the right thing to say at the end is to spin my weakness into a strength (or I think I have anyway, I haven't tried it in an interview yet lol). My biggest weakness is that I have a disability called Aspergers Syndrome which affects how I work with people. Pretty much I don't like socialising and prefer to be alone nearly all the time. I will smile at people to be kind and listen if they say stuff to me, but I am too self conscious and nervy to say much back except 'uh huh' lol. But when I tell the employer this I can also add that it means I work really hard and don't take long breaks. So in a sense I am hoping to give them the impression that if they employ me they will get some excellent quality for their money because I won't take long cig breaks to chat with colleagues or anything! I will just sit at my desk or work station and work. So I plan on using that when I get interviews to try and get hired. I just need to make sure they look past the lack of socialising bit to see the potential ~ Crosses fingers ~ Here's hoping anyway lol! All the best, Dranz PS: You never answered, what is your biggest weakness?

Hi. My biggest weakness in job interview are I can't lie. That's why I think I always failed to passed any interview for promotions. How can I'm telling people that I can do a lot of things that I can't do. A lot of my friends passed their interview with flying colours and get their promotion quicker than me. Even my junior were also already surpass me. Another thing is that they can just cope with their new promotion job easily. What did I realise is that when you get higher post, your job were getting less and only the responsibility is getting bigger. Maybe it was just their luck..:

hi, same as you. I find it hard to lie. I have been unemployed due to some circumstances but I have been told by agencies that I would need to refine my interview skills as companies doesn't want to know what really happen to me but how I can impress them to want to hire me. This, while people clinch jobs easily, I am still unemployed. And thus, here I am looking for some side earnings while searching for my full time job.

Your question already gives my answer: the interview. I hate interview. I'm a type of person who prefers to listen and occasionally give my opinion when necessary. Every time I have a job interview, I practice my script and expect the unexpected. Doing so much interview takes away the nervousness a bit, but I guess it will never leave. If that's the case so be it. If I would given a choice whether to have an interview or written exam, apparently, I'll choose the latter; since I do well with written words.

my biggest weakness is i never get afraid of interview and interviewer, i took that session as a conversation between two professionals, where i do tell my qualities and what can i do for the company and at the same time company will tell what exactly they need. SO that perticuler casual approach most of the time leads to rejection for me so many time i guess. though i dont know my that perticuler approach is right or wrong. that what i feel this is my biggest weakness

My biggest weakness when it comes to a job interview is the salary because sometimes when the salary is not good enough, I do not know how to say "please increase my payment because i'm a good quality worker". Well, i hope you get my point. But nowaday no matter how much is the salary I feel good n it because now it's really hard to find job suit in your course.

This question, as explained by my high school lecturer, is a trick question. It's not meant for you to answer it honestly about all your flaws but rather, you have to pin point a weakness and explain why it's your weakness and THEN change it to become a strength or how you are trying to overcome it. The quite "standard" answer I would always say is being technically inexperience, because I want to be able to relate to the position that I am applying for.

I would say that my biggest weakness is that I don't know when is the best time to shut my mouth up. I am the best when quiet, but I am rarely quiet... so this is a thing that my bosses always find too late :) I can't think of anything else right now but there are certainly other things

I always hated this interview questions.I Would tell the interviewer i hate this question and ask them why i would share any of my weakness with them.I think they just ask people this question to see them squirm. I've interviewed and hired several people and i have never found this question to be useful in picking the best candidate.

I guess that part should not be included in all interviews because I really find it very awkard and too personal but if ever I should answer that question I have to make sure that I followed it right away with my strength to cover my previous statement regarding weakness.

You should tell them a weakness that would also count as a strength. For example you can say something like you have the tendency to push your constituents too hard to the point that not many people like you for that. However, you are doing it only during times when the need arises like if a project is not anymore moving as scheduled and people need the motivation and drive to do their jobs accurately and quickly so that it finishes according to schedule.

Alot of jobs where I'm from make you take a test where they ask you silly questions like "How much money have you stoled from an employer?"then they have multiple choice answers.Like someone is really gonna say they stoled all the time from a past employer. Then they ask multiple questions on how you would react in certain situations.I think them asking all these question is very stupid.Alot of businesses do it now.
