I Changed My Mind About Teenagers

Venezuela

When I was a teenager, I often hear the grown ups complaining about the stupid things that we teens do. I've always thought that it was the generation gap. That they just don't understand what we are going through. 10 years later, here I am now. I changed my mind. Teenagers can be real idiots. They do stupid things that they don't realize. They invent fashion that they think are cool. They get themselves into situations that they will regret in the future. I guess this will always be the case. Grown ups will always think that teens are idiots and teens will realize that this is true later in their lives.

I personally don't think teens are stupid or idiots. I see them more as uninformed and less equiped to deal with the events of life. The fact is that the "stupid" things they do are all of the life lessons that they need to learn. Some learn much quicker than others and don't appear to make as many mistakes in life. I have two teenage step sons who are actually pretty smart, no typical teens. They both have good heads on their shoulders and will listen to reason unlike most their ages. But as you said we all went through it and when they get older they too will realize some of the things that they did not listen to were "stupid".

Exactly. You got out exactly how I felt. Teens just haven't had the chance to experience life. They're curious, not stupid.

I know they are not, I've been there. What I am saying is that they CAN be real idiots which means they choose to be rather than thinking rationally.

Well.... I tend to agree with you in some ways but despite the frustration, I have learned there are actual biological and physiological reasons for this. Teenagers are flooded with hormones. If you've ever had PMS or known someone with PMS, that's an excellent example of what hormones do to a person. I also have learned that many of the stupid and idiotic things teens do stem from the fact that they just don't have certain things developed - the sense to look ahead in a lot of cases, to realize the true consequences of actions, etc. This isn't an excuse, so it doesn't mean adults don't have the right to get angry with them, we do, but it IS a reason. For example - another ADULT has a fully developed brain so an adult cannot blame their idiocy on being 'half baked'. A teenager probably WOULDN'T use that as an excuse but if it came down to it, that'd be true. I HAVE a teenager and one of the biggest things that doesn't make sense to me is his inability to think anything through - from beginning stages to the realization of a goal - and the fact that he forgets anybody else besides him lives in this house. He expects to be able to ask me for money or to drive him somewhere whenever, without warning, and often without really ASKING. I think one of the problems I have with a lot of teens these days are their total disregard for responsibility and the fact that many of them have NO motivation - to improve themselves, their lives, become independent, etc. Some of this is learned - because often times parents just continue to DO everything for these kids so they never learn.

Haha...this is so true. Granted I wasn't really one of those problematic teenagers but I did do my share of stupid things. I remember my friends always complaining about adults not understanding them and everything. And yes, I do remember those fashion trends that I consider stupid now. An example would be a lot of the guys at my high school shaving their arms. They thought it was cool or something at the time and we didn't think anything of it because it was the 'popular' kids who did it. Now that I think about it though, that has got to be one of the lamest and stupidest things to be considered 'cool'. I also find myself thinking that today's teenagers are kind of idiotic in a lot of things. It really is a big turnaround from when I was that age.

I think you're wrong. you are being judgmental and stereotypical. There's just as many stupid adults as there are teenagers. You can't put all teens into that.

Teenager are like child who have their own curiosity stage in life. This is the stage where their bodies develop to become mature, so as their minds and views in life. They are easily affected by the society and environment. Their wants to be mature tend to be like experimental shot for them like what have you said that make new experiments for themselves to be someone known. This is the stage they do all stupid things in life and does not feel the consequences of their actions.

To be honest, every generation thinks the one after them is much worse for whatever reason. We tend to roll are eyes when we are teenagers at the talk of the adults. Then to turn around, we tend to make pretty much the same critiques after those who had come after us. I always though certain teenagers were a bit foolish when I was one and even more so as I got older. Perhaps I was to a certain extent at times, an unfortunate part of being a teenager. Some grow up, while others just merely get older.

I totally understand whta you're saying. I'm 19 (and so technically still a teen, lol), but I had a big realization about my peers when I was about 16. I saw how mindless, irrational and selfish they were, and how they only thought about immediate things. I do agree that most, if not MANY, teenagers are really stupid.

Hi. I'm totally agree with you in this topic. What is this "World of freedom"? Sometimes you must have a barriers in certain area. If you apply freedom to the teenagers without any control, you will get a bad teenagers. Of course we cannot stop the teenagers from going through their teenagers life but it should be control. There must be borders that they cannot trespass. The most important things that we should thought our teenagers is the value of respecting old people. They should also been injected with a lot of positive values. There's a lot of positive things that teenagers can do as a teenagers and they cannot complaint of missing their part of teenagers life..:
