The other day while I was at Dollar General I saw a worker peeking up an aisle. I looked and there was a woman taking things off the shelves and putting them in a box she had with her…obviously shoplifting. This went on for a while and then while the workers were distracted the woman walked out of the store with the box. What got me was that she was stealing holiday stuff…like Valentine’s stuff. With the economy being so bad I might understand food but Valentine’s stuff???? Anyways after she went out the door, the police officer went after her but she was already gone. My brother was sitting in the car in the parking lot and the police officer questioned him about why he was there and who he was waiting for…insinuating that he was partners with the shoplifter. Have you ever witnessed someone shoplifting? Would you turn them in? How desperate would you have to be to turn to shoplifting? **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

No I have never witnessed anything like that thank goodness.like you said valentines stuff ,Idon't agree with shop lifting but taking basic food items is understandable in this day and age.I did help someone out at the till once, this poor girl ,poorly dressed and really hard up was going through her money trying to make it enough for her shopping a loaf, milk and dried milk.So I did hand some money over and so did another man.Who paid for the other groceries she had already put back.I would help any body out if they were genuine but to steal luxuries is a crime in its self.

some people steal just to steal.they don't really need the stuff they swipe. i saw a two girl team stealing from a clothes store at the mall once. i was sitting in the food court across from the shop. the one girl ran so they'd chase her instead when the other was the one who had the goods on her.this was in the days when they just started putting those tags on things,so it was hit or miss without taped proof.

hi twoey yes and I told the store manager who watched then when he say her stuff merchandise in her sweater, he tapped her on the shoulder, and asked her to come with him,so I imagined he called the police, I would have to be very desperate to shoplift as its very easy to get caught , It will cost you something too if you are caught and arrested. Also I do believe in the ten commandments and thou shat not steal is high on my own list. I have to look at myself in the mirror everyday and I want to be proud of myself, not ashamed.

Hi, twoey68. I know that my son likes to pick up things and put in his pocket. My daughter took gum out of the store too. I have seen many people shoplift before... It has happened... I am very surprised that this woman was able to walk out of the store without the beeping noise suddenly coming on.. That is very odd. Well the police was after her so the law was alerted. I wished that your brother was not questioned just because he was sitting in the parking lot. I guess that is just procedures... It is not fair to think that someone is involved with something just because they are around. By this time, the thief would have been done long gone... I hope that they catch this woman. I just wonder how she was able to just walk out of a store with a box full of merchandise without anyone saying anything to her. Being that the police was looking for her, someone had to have noticed her shoplifting. We have many shoplifters in this world, especially being that the economy is going down.

I think that as soon as the employees of the store saw what she was doing, they should have pulled her aside. Shoplifting is wrong and no one's morals should allow them to do so. However, I also acknowledge the fact that there are despirate people in the world today. But holiday stuff?? I don't understand this at all. As for me, it wouldn't matter how despirate that I was, I would not under any circumstances take something from someone that was not rightfully mine. If my family was hungry I would go to the food bank and graciously accept what they had to offer to me. If it was holiday decorations that I was in need of, I would just go without.

As you said, it might depend on what the person was stealing. However, shoplifting hurts us all. Stores jack prices up a lot just to pay for the goods that are stolen. Since prices are high enough already, it's sad that working people living from paycheck to paycheck have to pay for what other people do as well as for themselves. If the woman could steal things and get away with it, it seems that she would be capable of getting a job. There's no excuse unless people are actually starving.

There is no excuse even if people are hungry. If they casn't work then let them go to the food pantry and ask for help.

The woman should never been allowed to leave the store. Maybe your brother had seen the license plate of the vehicle she left in. But why would he notice? He had not been in the store so he did not know anything was wrong. Yes, our economy is bad and people are desperate to live a normal life as they know it to be. After acceptance sets in, people will learn to do with what they have. But this is going to take a long while for our society to get to this point. The older generations are better at adapting to hard times.

Another Fish - PS: It is probably something I am doing wrong.
Did your brother see the shoplifter? Did he take down her license plates? If this went on for a while did you report it? Of course I would have turned them in and if it had been my brother I would have called him with our cell phones to let him know to be watching and helping the police. Shoplifting drives the prices up for all of us and Dollar General has fair prices. They are one of my favorites stores. There is no amount of desperation that would turn me to shoplifting because what comes around goes around. Besides, it is not usually the desperate people who shoplift, but rather thrill seekers and/or people with grudges.

Yet Another Fishie That I Hope Did Not Get Away - Already this year is turning out fishy! I keep drawing these guys and trying to upload them, but something went wrong. Well, as this cartoon says, I "never, ever give up!"
Well, I do not know how this cartoon keeps ending up wherever I go, but it was SUPPOSED to be on the first discussion I started today, and now it is following me around. Hmmmm. Would somebody please shoplift this cartoon...lol...anything to get it AWAY from me.

I have seen someone shoplift before and I reported them and they were caught. I got involved because it is people who steal from stores that can be one of the causes for prices to go up, besides, it annoys me very much! I work hard for the little money I get and I save for the things I want so why should someone just walk in and take what is not theirs? Everybody else has to work for things…I do think that people who steal food because they are hungry are an exception but it still does not make shop lifting right. There are those who have a psychological problem which pushes them to steal and that is sad…Fortunately there is help for those individuals.

There are many reasons why people steal; some just do it to see if they can get away with it. The person you saw may have children and could not afford gifts, who knows. Different people have different priorities.

I have heard that the loss in revenue stores experience as a result of shoplifters each year is one of the reasons prices go up...it is that prolific. I have seen a few people doing this, but for some reason, I've never turned them in. I always wonder if they have kids at home waiting for the food they steal, or if they have a mental illness like kleptomania. Karen

Well years ago I was shopping in a supermarket with my then 2 year old daughter. Two girls came up to me telling me how cute my daughter was but they were hanging around a bit longer that made me quite suspious. Then I realized one of the girls was trying to get my wallet out of my purse while the other girl was making small talk with my little girl. I yelled to get away from me and I took my baby and the cart to another isle. I found the manager and acting like I was looking to buy stuff I told him there are two girls in the store who just tried to rob me. Sure enough they were shoplifting. One of the girls I thought was pregnant had her blouse filled with stuff to make her look pregnant. The manager went after them and they went running out of the store with things falling from her blouse on to the ground. I was so shaken and upset over the whole thing. I just Thank God my Guardian angel was there to protect and make me realize they were trying to rob me. I'm not sure but I think they got away.

I forgot to answer your last question. I could not see myself turning to shoplifting. I would go to a family member for help before I stuped that low.

I never witnissed shoplifting as far as I am aware of. To some people shoplifting is something that thrills them, a challenge. If she was really hungry or poor she wouldn't steal valentines stuff but food (like you said). Or perhaps try to steal more valuable items that she could resell, even that I would understand up to a certain level if you have gone broke and see no other options. And let's not forget kleptomaniacs (hope I wrote that well?), to them stealing is an obsession, they don't even use the items.

I have witnessed someone shoplifting and yes, I turned them in. What most people don't realize is when they steal from stores we all pay in the form of higher prices. I would have to be pretty desperate to steal anything. I would never even be tempted to steal something as frivilous as Valentine stuff. If I ever sank to stealing it would have to be for the sake of my children and nothing else.

I worked in a grocery store, and we had one lady that they watched put steaks in her purse. They have to wait until they get past the registers before they can stop them. She made it past and seen they were watching and ran to her car and dumped them in the back seat. They arrested her, but when she went to court, it was thrown out because they were in her car and it could not be proven they were not there earlier.

I have thought someone might be but never saw anyone actually take anything and put it in a pocket or anything. Would I turn them in if I knew for a fact that they were? This is were Im gonna probably be told Im wrong.. blah blah blah BUT for honestly sake here it is. If they were taking what I would consider needs, the basics or something like that I might not. Now if it was just stupid things like candy, pop ect., I would have no problem turning them in. As for me, I would like to say I never will but If we really had nothing I would do what I needed to, to make sure my kids ate. But Valentines stuff?!

I can't understand why people can't just swallow their pride and go to the help services when they are in general need of help. Instead, they risk a criminal record and their own children to steal. Then of course, there are the teens who do it for a dare, or people like this woman who think they are entitled to take whatever they want without paying. In this case, the workers aren't even allowed to approach the shoplifter until the shoplifter actually makes a move out the door without paying for the goods. A person is allowed to put things in their bags and pockets while still in the store, as long as they pay for them on the way out, which is why so much can be stolen. Our daughter, who is five, got into alot of trouble a few weeks back when we were out on a shopping trip, for putting lollies in her pocket. We stopped her, took the items out and explained to her that it was wrong. As luck would have it, there was a police officer patrolling around, and we stopped and asked him what happened to people who steal, and he was more than willing to talk with our girl. The result is, I doubt very much she will try it again, and has actually been much better behaved when we go out. No matter how desperate life could be, I'd never resort to shoplifting. I value my sense of right and wrong too much would never shoplift, even if it were for food items that would give us food. More likely, I'd be raiding the gardens of local residence for food stuffs and would weed and help maintain their yards as payment. But that is the worst case scenario. And yes, there have been times when I have struggled to put food on the table, but I asked for help, instead of 'helping' myself.
