Obama pledges 100 million to Haiti

Wow...and he said it was an "immediate" kind of donation...not a so many dollars over so many years kind of thing. Where did the money come from? I thought we were broke? Beyond broke really. I don't mind helping those poor poeple. But has France given 100 million AND sent over troops and air craft carriers, soliders and supplies (you know all those things costs money too). Has Germany? China? Anyone? Has another given 100 million to them? And CNN is asking for Donations...ya..well....I already donated thanks to Obama...those were my tax dollars. So I am all donated out. Why is this looking like as usually America is going to end up solidering most of the costs and do most of the work...what is up with the rest of the world? Why aren't they giving AS MUCH AS WE ARE? We are in the middle of an economic crisis here. Can we really afford to do this on our own or with just a little help from the rest of the world? Should we be exspected to?

The numbers are not in on how much has been pledged by other countries for Haiti. We do know that Belize, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Cuba, France, Guyana, Israel Iceland, Japan, Morocco, the Netherlands, Russia, Spain and the United Kingdom all offered aid. I refuse to comment on the idea of America being the one with the most monetary donations. People are still dying, entire lives have been torn apart, and turning a natural catastrophe into a political argument over who helps more so close to when it happened, is both counter productive and inconsiderate, in my opinion.

I agree they need to be helped. It is a bad situation....But when a natural diseaster happens happens in the world it always seem to be us to have to handle to majority of it. We pledge more in foreign aid than the other countries every year. We help out more when something like this happens....I would just like to see the rest of the world step up to the bat and handle more of it instead of leaving most of it to us.

Relatively speaking, many other countries DO step up to the plate. For some of the very small countries that always help in international disasters ONE million would be equivalent to 100 from us. Annie

Yes but there are also some that are richer than us that don't. Those are ones I am most upset with.

If you look at the news, then you will see that many other countries are giving aid to Haiti. China is one of them as well as Venezuela so please get your facts straight. Oboma is trying to get the money back from the banks that he loaned them and this will help to pay for some of the aid to countries in need such as Haiti.

Obama is trying to get the banks to pay the money back (tax money) so that we will not be in a big a financial shape as we are in now. I agree that the CEOs and other in those companies that got bailed out do not deserve the golden parachutes that they go because they did not do their job right. Let a low paid employee make a mistake and he/she will pay dearly for it or even get fired.

But they DID not donate 100 million.Did they? I do not say that they were not donating...just not as much as us. or are they sending the military or supplies that we are either. And a lot of those countries are better off economically than we are right now. they could afford to give more but don't. By the way.... the Tarp money that went to the banks was tax payer money....it should have come back to us. We are suffering too. But no one seems to care about that. I am all for helping those poor people....but it ticks me off that banks, and wall street CEOs got a bail out....at tax payer expense (and used most of it to make the rich richer) and now haiti gets a bail out....where is the average citizen of this country's bail out? We are barely holding on. Yet we are getting saddled with more debt and more taxes.

..thing is with so many hoping for our economic (and otherwise?) downfall.. will rescue, rebuilding and the like (and dealing with terrorism)be carried out as much? President Clinton tried very hard to help Haiti, but millions of dollars pretty much disappeared. The Dominican Republic on the other half of the Island is productive and prosperous, but the poor folk of Haiti have always been ramshackle poor. What's the difference? One is free enterprise and individuality, and the other is government fully in charge.. well gangsters, really, is what they have for government, as do so many nations of the world.. and some of those leaders sit on the U.N. Security Council, which so many want the U.S. sovereignty to be under.. Why don't we all band together and liberate people from their gangster governments?

And with governments in control of the money who knows if all that money will go to the people... I bet the people might see a quarter for every dollar spent. This is why I usually do only charity in my own local community and make sure every cent goes to who really needs it. But really what's another 100 million right?

Our government does not know how to handle any money. My husband is a personnelist in the military. They waste huge amounts of money. I really think that charitable organizations can handle the situation best when it comes to actual relief efforts. And I feel that the generosity of the American people and people of the world would be better perceived.

From what I am reading in the news....there is no government in Haiti right now. Most of them can not be accounted for...Hilary has already promised that the US will be the "glue" that holds the country together until such time as a government can be reestablished in Haiti. That and UN peacekeeper are suppost to be there soon to restore the peace.

I don't see it as well percieved. Most of the world hates us. And we give away Billions each year in foreign aide. Do most of them appricate it or like us better for it? Nope they just hold out there hand for more of our money like it is owed to them and then go on hating us just the same. If something happens somewhere in the world the first country they look at for help is the US.

Didn't you know he has a printing press in a back room that he can get all the money he wants. china has sent help and countries around the world are sending aide. I just heard on the news that one school of 700 students had collapsed and they don't hear any noise coming from it. This just breaks my heart. The TV stations here in my area are taking donations.

It is a heart breaking situation. I feel for those people and I hope they can put their lives back together again soon and rebuild. As for the printing press....someone needs to take it from him. It is only making things worse in this country.

We have money and thus we owe it to everyone else. Obama has already made that clear. The fact that we are in debt is irrelevant. The fact that people in this country are suffering is irrelevant. All that matters is that Obama has access to money (not his own) and he will give it to those who deserve it more than we do. I do agree that it is proper to send aid to Haiti for this disaster, but other countries aren't considered superpowers and thus avoid the obligation we have. It's not just about money either, countries like Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela have no shortage of money they could send, but nobody expects it from them.

It really ticks me off. The rest of the world thinks we are a bottomless pit of money and that THEY are entitled to it. We are not bottomless and it is nice to help your neighbors when they need it....but it should not be a requirement when can not afford it. I know a lot of people right here in our own country suffering with this economic crisis that could have used a "bail out". But only the rich get bailed out in american. Yet we give away billions each year in foreign aid.

It is our responsibility to help other when they are in need of help, it is the only Christian thing to do. The United States has funds appropriated for these type of disasters, it is up to each administration to make sure that these funds are used correctly. America has gone through many tragedies, we do not turn our back on fellow human beings when they are in need of desperate help and aid. It is very insensitive for any American to speak about this in regards to money, and you are not correct about the aid of other countries. There are many other nations that are giving millions of dollars - plus important and vital aid to the Haitian people.

oh they are giving....but none of htem are giving 100 million dollars. I am not insensitive to what is happening to those poor people. They need help. I would jsut liek to see the rest of world give as much as we do. Heck Haiti is getting more help than the poor people of Katrina. How is it that we can't help our own people really fast...but we can sure be in another country super fast to help them out? To get them the aid and money they need? It took a lot longer with Katrina and WE KNEW it was coming....no one knew this earth quake was going to happen and as soon a it happened we were all over it to help people. Don't get me wrong. I am glad they are getting help fast...I just wish the people of Katrina has gotten the same fast care.

Because Obama has no concept of the red ink in his check book. By the way, the President has NO ability to spend money. Someone else has to write that check. And thank you for your support. You are a generous giver!

As others have already pointed out, most of the world has pledged their help. It will probably end up that we give the most, as usual, but is it really fair to compare what we give with what nations like France or Germany, which are as big as just one of our states, give? It would have to be figured on a per capital basis before they could be criticized for not stepping up to the plate. Also, there is the fact that Haiti is closest to US and there are thousands of Americans living there and thousands of Americans here, especially in Florida, with their entire families there. We're not doing this entirely alone but I'm very proud that we're leading in the best possible way this time! Annie

I know we are richer than France or Germany. But there are countries like Saudi Arabia...they have not been hurt by the ecomonic crisis and are ALOT richer than us....do they give like us? No. How about Venezula. rich right now. Are they giving 100 million? Most of the oil rich countries don't give like we do. But they could afford to. Very easily. But they look at us to do it. The UN actually called out some of the rich United Arab nations to give more aid to foreign aid because they could afford easily afford it. They said no. No one got up in arms to them about that. It was earlier in the year when they asked...it was for money for the world hunger program for the UN. I don't mind that we are helping....it just ticks me off that other countries that are in a better fiancial situation than we are don't. And I do worry about where the 100 million is going to come from. This country is in the red. Someone has to worry where the money is going to come from to pay for everything...our government sure isn't.

For the most part, the people of the United States have always had that noblesse oblige mentality. So, we will probably always be first on the scene with the most help. As far as our government giving money in this situation, I feel that's a mistake. There's too much corruption in Haiti and I doubt the money will get into the hands of those who need it the most. Instead of money, it would be better, in my opinion, if needed supplies and personnel were sent.

i understand your concern. however, maybe they need the money more than you do... maybe their need are more urgent than what is presently experienced by America. Maybe, it could be better if we offer a little prayer for the victims than talk about money, maybe it will help. God Bless America and its people!
