Cow duty - just another service we provide

Yesterday I was driving Dearra to the store down my little country road and we noticed that there was a cow that had gotten outside the fence. We went and did our shopping and when we came back, Dearra said, "look mom, somebody got pulled over." Well as it turned out, somebody hadn't gotten pulled over. There was a Highway Patrol car on the side of the road with its lights on and there was the cow. Apparently somebody had called them and they were making sure that the drivers on that road went slowly until the owners came and retrieved their cow (part of the fence was down). This morning it happened again. There was a cow outside the fence and a CHP car on the side of the road with its lights on. I wonder if the nice patrolmen knew when they signed on that they would be doing cow duty...

my brother has a horse farm in a semi-rural area in NJ. He sends the police benevolence society a healthy check every year for their service in Equine retrievals and late night phone calls saying "get up, your horses are in town" (which is about two miles away).... The joys of large animal ownership

I guess so. I suspect fence maintenance is a huge time and expense....

Yup, ma'am it is all in the line uv duty. Preserve and protect y'know. Seriously, it is important, those cows can cause wrecks and lots of damage to vehicles. Many years ago I got to run one home as it got in front of my school bus on a driveway that had steep sides it could not get up, so it just trotted in front of me clear to the house. That is all I can visualize with your post.

Same thing happened last year, except that time it was a horse that got out. Yep, I'm sure they could do some damage...

hi dawnald wow cow duty. Oh I suspect being a rural community that the patrolman knew what he could expect. Imagine a deputy sheriff coming onto me, a teen ager trying to get our brindle'cow out of the local cemetery where she was determined to munch on all the newly planted pansies on the various graves. I was' sweating buckets trying to persuade Daisy to come with me and not eat up all the flowers. The deputy was wonderful though and he helped me to corral little daisy and helped me to get her back home. She was a small cow but decidedly brindle, meaning she jumped fences. My dad finally sold her to a neighbor who had no idea what he was in for at all. Another hazard on our South Dakota roads was herds of sheep. but with all the men and the sheep dogs if you were patient they would bypass the traffic pretty quickly.

I guess that's something you have to expect in a rural community. Not something I ever saw in LA (though we did have cows nearby)...

Around here is the cops have to be called for a straying animal you as owner will be billed for service rendered. That is why when ever I find an animal like that out I try to get to the owners. It's hard to chase cows or horses in high heels.

I was thinking that the owner was going to get charged. I didn't see the fence down today either, so Ms. Cow must have found another way out...

I love it - just like JA only there wouldn't be a police car to warn people. Do the cows have he rights of the road where you live? They do in an old English Law out here.I am out of here for a while. Too much drama

I'm pretty sure they don't, but being property, the driver would have to stop and report it if they actually hit a cow.

That reminds me of a story I heard when I was a teenager. living in a rural town. Somebody's cows did get loose, and two of them got on to the railway tracks...

two towns over from me there's a lot of farms..some poor cow got a 55 gallon drum stuck on it's head the one time and crashed through the fence wandering around the busy main road. i bet those cops had a good story to tell for awhile.

I bet they did. Reminds me of the skunk that got its head stuck in a cup. I'd rather deal with the cow...

I have a couple of friends that are policemen...you should hear the stories! One lady called 911 because a bird kept flying into her pictue window...she wanted the police to come? Crazy....they told her that there was nothing they could do...and that is just one of the crazy things they have to deal with...

Teehee, nice term there, cow duty. And now my imagination starts to run wild. How about horse duty, goat duty, sheep duty, LOL. As long as there is no Zombie duty... Alright, too many Zombie movies.. I ought to have my coffee again. See ya, Dawny..

I doubt it would be on their job description! I wonder if, when these guys joined the force they had expectations of dealing with criminals and helping the public out in more heroic ways than cow duty! (LOL)! Seriously though it is important that police cars are present in these sorts of situation because an amusing cow incident can become a danger to drivers. In Australia we’ve had tragedies on country roads due to kangaroos attempting to cross to the other side.

At least the officer gets to sit in his nice warm car instead of being out in the rain. Not so for the poor cow!

Hi dawnald, It must be better than catching criminals I'd say, and they can relax in the countryside, even have chat with the cow and to tell them not to keep coming out of the field or they will be booked, loll! Tamara

I can just imagine it now. "Hey cow. The grass is greener on the side of the fence that you were already on." "Ha, you're not fooling me, it's greener right here by the road."
