I am good at my mother tongue. I write very good launage as the number 1 newspaper in my mother tongue uses. But, I have seen people who born and brought up in English speaking coutries, but they write horrible English, compared to people like me from a non-English speaking country. No offenses please. I don't understand how this happens. How can a person makes mistakes in his mother which he has been listening and talkign right from his birth?

Language is just a communicate skill, you use language just to communicate with others. The most important thing is you can express your meaning and comprehend others,so those two points achieved that's okay..

I am sorry to say that I have a different opinion. Communication is very important in a person's life. You need it wherever you go. It is fine for a person to live if he is able to convey the message and comprehend hisneeds to others, but it is different when it comes to a professional environment. If you want to get promoted to a higher leve, you must need good Englilsh to communicate with clients. It is very important to write the language you use without mistakes, rather than conveying the information. I don't think one should possess a posh use of language or great vocabulary. One person should know to read, write, and speak at least his mother tongue without mistakes. This is my personal opinion. Thanks for the response.

It is great to hear that at least you know your mother language and able to speak and write in a good way. There are vernacular versions in my lanauge too, but there is a standard language which the news papers follow and it is considered as the standard language. Also, the pronunciation varies from place to place. But, the standard one is the pronunciation news readers use.

I'm quite proud to say that I can speak, read, and write my mother tongue well. My parents get full credit for that. Despite the fact that I grew up in a foreign country, they insisted that I learn my mother tongue. And learn it well. But I'd like to link this to the question you asked at the end, namely, how a person can make mistakes in a language he has been listening to from birth. I think it will be easy to speak the language in this context, but reading and writing it is another issue altogether. And even if one can speak the language well, writing it clearly, using appropriate tone and style is another issue altogether. That's my two cents.

Hi daliaj I can speak, read, and write my mother tongue very well and not only me but my entire family knew it. During the summer holidays, I used to teach my children the alphabets and small small sentenses in my mother tongue and if they did it well, I will reward them. In this way I made them expert in reading and writing. Ofcourse, we speak in our mother tongue only at home. For me without knowing our mother tongue to speak, read and write is no less than insulting our mother

I have always been very good at both speaking and writing in my mother tongue of English. I guess it's because I enjoyed reading books and writing stories ever since I was in infant school, so it's kind of stuck with me really. The fact that I managed to earn an A* in English Language and Literature and college means that I can't be too bad at English

It is nice to hear that you are good at your mother tongue. One way to improve in a lanugaue is to read books. When I seriously wanted to improve my English, many people suggested me to read novels, maganzines, and news paper. It worked out well for me. Currenly, I can speak four languages. I am interested to learn more lanugages.

I can speak and write well in both my mother tongue and my first language. I was brought up in UK, and spoke British English all the way till I was 5. However, when I was 5+, we went back to my home-country and I slowly picked up the language there. Though so, I have to admit it took me a while to catch up with other kids my age who were more fluent then I was. I still speaks English at my homecountry. Regarding your question, language abilities in a person varies greatly from one individual to another. The person could have a language disorder or a learning disability such as dyslexia. It also depends on the environment where there person grew up. Maybe their parents had bad English or such. People learn through examples. If they had no other choice to talk to people with bad English. Although they grew up in a English speaking country, there are so many other languages that might be practiced at the country. Possible the person has a preference to speak the other language, compared to English. This would make their English speaking ability slowly deteriorate after a whileif they don't practise it. We all make mistakes, and I guess we slowly learn to correct them. Although my first language was English, I too make gramatical errors everday. I hope I'll improve my English so the impression I'll give is much better then "being a person who grew up in UK but speaks bad english" The thing about language is, as the saying goes.. "Use it for lose it" Have a nice day!

Only the educated people can write well in their mother tongue even. All others who can speak well any language, need not have the capability to write too.See,speaking needs no effort but to write, one should know where and how to start things and should have the potential to convey what he wants to say in a precise manner. That needs practice.

Hi daliaj! I could speak and write my mother tongue well. My native language is very much different and could be a hindrance in learning english. But I am studying hard just to improve my english communication skills. In my opinion, english speaking countries does not focus more on grammar, I think when they just communicate with each other and both parties do understand the conversation, its good enough. It's just like talking in our mother languange, we don't care about the grammar, just as long as we understand each other then its fine. Happy mylotting!

The English language differs between the countries in which it is spoken. Here in the Uniated states, English is a melting pot of various languages. Quite often most people perfer to take that, cut it down, and speak in slang. Quite often the way a person types is a reflection of how they talk. I'll admit I don't spell well, but I make a good effort in to making sure that what I'm trying to say is understood correctly. English is my native tongue as I was born and raised in the Unitated states. However, I can assure you I can speak better then I can spell. Being blind has a lot to do with it. "looking it up" doesn't work because I can't see how something's written in print, and in braille, we use a lot of shortcuts to save paper.

Hi dailaj, unfortunately I am not able to read or write my mother tongue. I can, however, speak it. I was not brought up here. I didn't come up in an environment with this language. I am ok with Hindi and English. I can however, very very slowly read the printed text. Manuscripts, absolutely no.

Hi daliaj, I am very good at my mother tongue and read well but the thing is i don't know to write it. Here when we were studying in our schools we didn't have out mother tongue taught. More over we should encourage Small kids to speak in there mother tongue itself even if they stay in local areas also and more over they learn other languages fast. Have a great day

I am a hindi speaking person and very good at speaking and writing both. I love to communicate in my mother tongue but that is not always possible, I have to use English at work place. we do use Hindi as well at workplace however that is not encouraged. I do not write things in my mother tongue very often because there is very less scope at work, almost none. I do not remember the day when i wrote something in my mother tongue. I love my mother tongue. be happy and spread Happiness :)
