I have some frozen crab in my refrigerator, and the best by used date was over one month ago. This is the imitation prepackaged type. I want to use it, but I am wondering if it is safe. I am thinking since it is in the refrigerator it would be okay. Anyone knows if there is a problem using a product way pass the used by date.

I would look on the package and see who makes the crab. Maybe you can contact them and get their opinion. You can also contact the store where you bought it and chat with the butcher or someone in the meat department about using foods beyond the expiration date. If it was me and since it's crab, I would toss it. Many years ago I got so sick on crab meat dip that was sitting out at room temperature at a party. About 8 of us got real sick. Recently I found some chili beans and tomato juice shoved back in a cabinet. They were Campbell's products so I looked on their website and found out how long either could be used beyond the expiration date. They both were good for 2 years from the date they were canned. I found these 8 years later...lol We threw 3 cans of beans and tomato sauce away. According to the Campbell's website, using beyond the expiration date would hamper the taste.

Thanks for giving me the best response. I sure wouldn't eat crab that was beyond the date stamped on the package. I had food poisoning once and it's miserable.

I do go by that I'm very paranoid about food poisoning, I've never had it thank goodness but i wouldn't want to either. I'm always smelling food and looking at it closely to make sure it's still good before i eat it or feed it to my family.

If, I were you, I won't take a risk. It is better to be safe than having trouble in the end. I have read somewhere that sea foods don't last longer than a month even in the refrigerator, and besides, it doesn't taste so good as you're expecting it to be. Don't fuzz over...just throw it away.

You are right about being safe than sorry. I just hate to waste food.

It could be risky, although some companies are overly cautious about there useby date. I generally think that if it was in the freezer, it can last for months, but if it's the fridge I have to eat it that week. Then again, I don't know much about crab. I'm usually thinking about beef and chicken.

It was in the freezer. I am going to cook it and see what happens.

I think if it has been frozen, it should be okay. Had it only been in the refrigerator, I would definately pass on it. I am forever checking dates on every food item. I even have my boyfriend watching dates now. It doesn't bother me a bit to throw out "old" stuff. I don't want to take a chance of becoming sick from it!

Frozen or not I won't take the risk. If it was me it would hit the trash. They put the dates there for safety. I wouldn't want to take the chance.

venshida for frozen imitation crab that is over one month past the date no I would really toss the stuff. we had some here that I wou ld bet was way past the due date and had that old fish uriney smell. anyway half of the people who ate the stuff were ill the next day so I would play it safe and toss the stuff. If it has an odor when its thawed out I would definitely throw it out. it is not worth taking a chance.I know that the salad made me very ill. I know that imitation crab is seldom fresh when it gets to the stores and only gets less fresh as time goes on. seafood does not have a great shelf time as it is.
