Pure breeds are expensive, so if you aren't looking to spend that much, you are probably looking at a regular 'domestic' cat. Keep in mind that long-haired cats take a lot more attention to keep their coats healthy, cause they can mat up pretty easily, and if it gets too bad then you are looking at a grooming visit to get the mats cut out. I also recommend looking at shelters in your area, vs. pet stores, since there are plenty of young cats looking for homes at shelters, while petstores are likely to have mostly kittens.

Good points. I'm going to add to this DO NOT get a cat at a petstore. Go to your local shelter, a rescue, or if you do want a purebreed find a responsible breeder. Kittens at pet stores could be coming from the puppy and kitty mills that you hear about from the ASPCA. You could be supporting someone who breeds cats in unhealthy conditions and they are no closer to purebred than anything you'll find in a shelter or rescue. A responsible breeder will ask you questions to ensure that they're kitten is getting a good home. They will give you vet records and answer any questions you have about their breed and how they raise their kittens. They should also be able to give you references, although you probably won't need to go that far. Bottom line is stick with shelters, rescues and responsible breeders and AVOID pet stores!

Orange cats, who are mostly male have very even tempermemts. They are sweet and will make a great friend! Just remember to get him fixed at the right time; you wont like a cat who sprays.

I would go look for a rescue cat. An adult is much better at not needing as much "parent" time than a kitten and you can talk to the foster parent about their personality. What do you want? An active cat or a sedentary cat? Do you want one just for looks or for interaction? Do you want one who will sleep with you, or is happy to sleep some place else? A cat from a rescue would have been there long enough to probably be able to have the foster parent know what they are like.

I suggest a place like petfinder.com They will help you select the breed that's right for you. Though I'd go for a good-natured well tamed breed. Thease are known to be lap cats and get along well with families and other people. You don't too wild a breed, otherwise they might not get along with other pets or people. I wish you the best of luck in your search for the perfect feline friend.

Sometimes you have to let the Feline Friend find you. Walk in and out of stores, stroll up and down the Feline area and see the ones bold enough to come towards you. They are wonderful creatures. I hope you will be adopting one from shelters. They need love as well. Good Luck,
