Are You Any Good At Styling Your Own Hair?

I would say that I'm not that good at styling my own hair. There are a number of good reasons for this. Firstly, the dressing-table with the mirror is situated in the corner, opposite to any electrical sockets in the bedroom! So, whenever I dry my hair I've no mirror to look at whilst I am doing it. I can check it afterwards but that's about it. To be honest, even if I could sit in front of a three-way mirror I wouldn't know where to start with my hair. I watch my hairdresser blow-dry mine then out come the straighteners and with a flick of the wrist it's all done! I've only had my striaghteners out twice and by the time I'd finished my hair looked TOO straight, if you see what I mean. It just kinda hung down without any shape to it! I totally admire women who can create their own hairstyles that are the envy of the catwalk! Come on girls, share your tips with me! I'm not a lost cause just yet...I don't think.

you may have directed the topic for girls and women to respond to, janey, but there are also males and others that are very meticulous when it comes to styling their hairs, be it long or short, jet black or peppery. these days, there are also a wide variety of styles and products that make hair styling virtually without limit; the only limit, perhaps, is one's creativity. for me, i don't care much about hairstyles. i maintain a short hair, easier to manage and cheaper to maintain. no gels, no coloring, no styling equipment and only the barber to visit every now and then.

Yes, you are quite right. Men are more meticulous than they used to be with their hair. It's mind-boggling the products they can buy now...and their fragrances are nicer than the womens'! My Dad visits the Barbers every 6 weeks or so as his hair looks like an ice-cream cone if he leaves it too long. No danger of him going bald, he's 72 now and has loads of hair. All he uses to flatten it is his comb and water. Not surprisingly, it takes him ages!!

Hi Jane, Since i have a curly hair, i was able to learn the different ways to style it. from piggy tail, braids, styles for formal occasions, party, daily, etc. i enjoyed palying with my hair. it's good that i maintained it long for easy styling. i am also having a hair treatment to keep my hair healthy.

Hey Janey! Don't feel bad! You sound just like me! I have to blow my hair dry without a mirror too! I also have been cutting my own hair for about the last two years because I let the layers grow out and don't know what to do with it! I am never happy when anyone cuts my hair! I have very thin, very tight curly, frizzy hair and it is difficult to style no matter how it is cut! So, I decided to do it myself! And I am not good at styling it either, but I just don't know what I want to do with it anymore!

Awww you poor thing, I do sympathise! My hair can look very good...but I need someone else to cut and style it for me. Mind you, so long as my hair is at a manageable length I don't really have to do that much with it anyway!

I am not good at styling my hair.that's one of the reasons why I would like to have my hair curled permanently.I would like to have waves to make my fine, limp hair lively.I have hair past my shoulders, and I don't know what to do with them.I either wear a ponytail or a headband.while some women want their hair straightened,I would like mine long and wavy.

Yes, my hair used to be straighter than it is now so I was always having it permed...easier to manage that way! Nowadays there is a slight "kink" in it so it's not entirely straight. That maybe due to layers that I have had put in my hair in the past...although they have grown out now. It may be an idea to have layers in your hair to liven it up a bit? Just a suggestion and thanks for your response, it's much appreciated.

Well, my friend. I've been used to styling my hair with my own as it don't require any special treatment. I usually shampoo my hair which turns my hair adaptable to the style that matches my personality. I don't need anyone to help me in this concern. Have a nice day.

Hello there! I have heard that henna is good for the hair. I would have to look for it specifically in our local shop. I think it is good for brunettes, is that right? Welcome to MyLot by the way.

My hsir style is pretty basic: shoulder length, parted in the middle, straight. All I need to do is run a brush through it, and it's styled. LOL

Hi Janey1966. No. I am not all that good with styling my hair either. I can fix my own hair, but I can't put my hair in all the latest styles that many women style their hair in. I will have to always get someone else to do it for me. I have very thick and long hair and that is another reason why I can't style my own hair. I would love to learn how to do it. I have many people tell me that if they had long hair they can put their hair in all kinds of styles. But that is for the ones that know how to fix their hair good. I always thought that for me having long hair makes it difficult to style it and fix it nicely. Sometimes, I wished that I had short hair, then just maybe, I can fix it better. But, I don't think that this will work for me. I better just settle with my long hair.

Are you one of those ladies who doesn't suit short hair? Mine tends to be shoulder-length. I have had it shorter but it has to be styled a certain way to keep it like that. Once it's longer it behaves itself more, somehow and if I get hot during the summer I just put it up in a pony-tail, usually. It makes me laugh when celebrities are shown on hair products adverts for Garnier or L'Oreal and it turns out they've had hair extensions so don't have luscious long hair after all!

Hello, Janey. I'm probably not the best one to advise you on this, because I never use hairdryers, straighteners or anything else other than heated rollers on my hair, and they only come out on special occasions. I keep my hair long, because it's actually easier to look after. I can wear it loose with a hairband, in a pony tail, plait or a chignon - all I have to do is make sure the top bit is tidy. If we're going somewhere special, I put my heated rollers in for an hour or so, then run my fingers through my hair to break up the curls. I have arthritis in my wrists and shoulders, so I can't hold my arms up to style it professionally. Aside from that, I don't think all that heat treatment does your hair any good, but that's just me on my hobby horse again.

My Mum uses rollers at the front of her hair...but not the posh heated ones you have. Whatever works for you is fine by me and if you want to use heat treatments, go right ahead! At least you are more adventurous than me. I once had hair clips all over my head and I looked like that bloke in the horror movie...er, whatsisname, dammit I can't remember! I do possess a rather nice light blue headscarf with fringes and glittery stars all over it. For the life of me I can't make it look good on my head. If I gave it someone else they'd do something fantastic with it, I just get in a muddle!

Hehehe. I love doing my own hair. I don't really remember how it started, all I remember is ever since I was a kid, I love doing my hair and my sisters' as well. Hehehehe. When I get bored, I would play with my sister's hair, doing styles, and putting enough spraynet to make it stand for a couple of days. Hahahaha.

Haha! I like it. I really love having my hair done as I can just sit there and let the hairdresser "get on with it." I am full of admiration for them as they seem to be able to do their own hair as well! It's just not fair!

This is definitely something that I am unable to do on my own. In fact, when it comes to the way that I keep my hair cut, I will have it cut in such a way that it is simply a brush and go hairstyle. If I had to do more with my hair on a daily basis than just brushing it or pulling it into a ponytail, then I know that I would be completely lost. Whenever I have to do something for a special occasion, I will go to the salon and have my hair done for me.

actually i dont know how to style my hair. i just comb it and dry then let it lay down. its summer already and sometimes i feel so hot then i just tied it up. i wanted to cut my hair short but my bf dont want short hair he said i look more pretty with my long hair. so even if i feel so hot with long hair i just ignore it besides summer will not be forever.

How long does your summer last for, is it humid? I do feel for you having long hair but at least you can tie it up like you say. I bet your bf doesn't have long hair though, d'you know what I'm saying?

Hello Janey, I dont know if I can be of help. If thats you in the photo, you have short hair (by my standards haha) My hair is down to my waist. I have naturally curly hair that I try to control lol. I use a curling iron. Its not that easy with very long hair, my arms arent long enough but I twirl it around and it works fine. Have you tried rollers or a curling iron? But first, Id highly recommend you find a space where you can sit in front of a mirror and have an electrical socket nearby. I use a large curling iron so my hair is just wavy and not frizzy. Cant you ask your hairdresser to show you how to fix your hair?

Do you mean curling tongs lol. It's great how we say some words differently, I love that! No, I don't possess any curling tongs or rollers and yes, I have asked the hairdresser to show me how it's done with the straighteners...I just forget it all, my mind goes blank once I'm at home!

Hi Janey, A hairdresser, I am not. I'd always worn my hair very long and straight so it was pretty much wash and go. I did get my hair cut finally a few years back to should length with long layers. That is a great style for almost anyone and very versatile. I also found that the straightener made my hair too straight. I got a large barrel curling iron and starting at the top of the hair, I slowly move it down while curling under. It is not curly but not straight either. I spray it as I fluff it out for volume. As for your mirrors, it is well worth it to have an extension cord so that you can dry your hair in front of the mirror. I actually think that air drying would be better than blow drying without being able to see what you are doing.

Many thanks for your advice, it's much appreciated. Funnily enough, I was eyeing up the dressing-table last night and I reckon I could swap it with the chest of drawers near to where the sockets are. It would be a pain to do this (and I would also have to remove a shelf that would be in the way) but it's something to think about for the future I suppose!

I have no eye-to-hand co-ordination, so I'm terrible at it. Also we need styles where the hair is one way on one side and the reverse on the other because that's what my hair always wants to do. If the left flips under, then the right flips out.

Oh dear, your hair doesn't want to co-operate does it? My husband seems to have what is called a Double Crown on his head so his hair grows in different directions. He wouldn't be able to style it even if he tried. This is the reason why he has it very, VERY short!

I'm not good at styling my own hair either. I don't even know what style suits me. I remember when I was a kid I would usually just get up and go. I never bothered to style my hair, but you know, we get older and become more conscious of our looks, so as of the moment I like to just fix my hair a bit early morning, put on wax occasionally. :P I really hate it when your hair is fixed then you see a side of your hair messed up. Haha.

At first, I was absolutely terrible at styling my hair, so most days I would just leave it how it settled after I had a shower (obviously combing it a bit to prevent it fluffing up). However, I eventually realized that my hair-style just made me look plain and boring, so I forced myself, and after lots and lots of practise, I can now porudly say that yes, I am good at styling my hair

hi janey! Hihi! yeah I do admire those girls who manage to style their hair beautifully. I envy them.. haha! I have two flat irons and a hair dryer but I don't get to use them everyday, I don't even remember the last time I laid my hands to them. I love to have a wavy or curly hair but I don't know how to style them like professionals do. I always ended up getting a weird hair style. So, I just comb my hair and thats about it.

In my entire life, as far as i can remember, i have been to the beauty salon 5times only. I have a curly hair, and i have been lucky to know how my hairstyle will suit the shape of my face and my body.Ive tried using the ironing thingy and styled my hair. I trim my hair , i know it better than the beautician. Sometimes i overdo cutting them, but they would grow in time anyway :)
