icicles

so i went to visit my parents yesterday and they have some huge icicles hanging off of the house and with the sun being out they were falling and there we some pretty impressive ones there. it was turning into a real hard hat area. my dad has a sunroom and his sidewalk leading to the sunroom is a solid sheet of ice from the icicles melting and alot of the bigger ones were banging the sunroom roof. so does anyone else have these monster icicles from our last big snowstorm. would you try to knock them down before they fall down or would you just let nature take its course. i would think some of the bigger ones could cause some damage if they landed in the wrong spot. i tried to knock some of the bigger ones out in the front down at least the ones i could reach as they are up pretty high.

The last couple of snow storms were all snow, and no ice for North Carolina. I didn't have much of an opportunity to drop kick any large icicles this year. I did, however, get to make a snowman, and watch a bunch of birds try to attack him. I guess they say me walk out with a small bowl a seed, and tried to find out where i hid it on his person. I was going for a broken/non-effective scarecrow effect, and it worked wonderfully.

well the last big storm here left us with about a foot of snow after we had about a half a foot the storm before that so you can imagine a decent amount of snow is on the roof there. so the next day or two has been right around freezing, maybe a little above and nice and sunny so during the day it is melting the snow on the roof then at night freezing it right there and making a bit of a mess to deal with, but you have to expect that after the storms we have had. hopefully it will warm up soon getting tired of the cold brr.

One thing I know is that if too much ice build up on the roof, when it starts to melt the water could pool up, and start raining into the house. So, yes, there might be a possibility of causing damage to the house by trying to knock the really big icicles down, but if they don't come down on their own, they could cause even more trouble. Another observation is that houses which have more and larger icicles hanging off of the roof probably have more heat leaking out of the roof.

what hasn't fallen that was melting drip, drip, drip has made a pretty good ice rink of the sidewalk, between my dad's garage and the house. we don't get them too bad too often usually the gutter will ice up a little and dad will have to loosen that up a bit. i just wasn't ready to get out of the car yesterday and see a lot of them come crashing down. thankfully most of them landed on the sunroom roof so wasn't a danger to anyone there, but was still very loud.

Did you use a broom handle?

no it was not a broom handle that wouldn't be long enough for where i was trying to reach had a long thick wooden i guess you could say stick i think it was off of some kind of duster or something, but was perfect to reach up high without having to get out a ladder.

Yeah I do have some pretty icicles growing off my house. I will leave them be and let nature take its course unless they would get in the pathway of where I would walk, then I would remove them so that they wouldn't fall and hit me as they are melting and as I would be walking under them.

my dad put something on the sidewalk between the house and the garage, because of all the ice that had built up from it dripping off of the roof. with all of the snow melting when it gets colder at night the ones that have melted have a tendency to reform overnight. they can get pretty impressive as long as they don't become dangerous, when they start falling when it warms up, which shouldn't be a problem tomorrow, since we are supposed to get another storm with at least a couple inches.

Considering the hazard they pose to the sidewalk I might try to knock them down, but that could get tedious. Did I tell you about the day I found an icicle dangling from my car? It wasn't even that cold!

you don't worry too much about the small ones, but if the big ones start melting, because of the weight they could fall and hurt someone or something and since we were shoveling off the sidewalk anyway we and dad knocked them down. you should have seem it bam! bam! bam! it was loud when they were all crashing down to the sidewalk in the back and in the front most of them fell into the bushes so at least we didn't have much to clean up after didn't get too much snow, but what we did get was a heavy wet snow.

How big is big for an icicle? The one I found dangling from my car was about 7 inches long but it wasn't thick. It was about the size of a medim carrot. The thing that got me was that it was not that cold and it was still there at 4:00 in the evening! My mechanic had been over the night before working on the car and when I got ready to go out I saw a wet spot on the driveway next to the right rear tire. That's how I found the icicle.
