Can you sleep on a car or bus trip?

Hey, mates! I usually have no problems with sleeping in a bus or in a car. It all depends on how tired I am. I am usually very likely to fall asleep, because I often get bored while on bus trip. Things are different when I have somebody to chat with. Anyway, I can sleep in bus or car, but it's usually quite uncomfortable. I can rarely lie down in a bus, so I have to sleep in a sitting position. My mouth just drops open and, because of my muscles start to relax, I start to lean forward. Then I suddenly flinch and wake up. And so on. It may look quite funny when seen from aside. What about you? Can you sleep well while being on a bus or car trip?

Absolutely. I can sleep on a bus trip. No problem. Like yourself however, if I have someone to chat with, that's another story. Almost always, if I am on a bus trip, I find a way to fall asleep. If I can not get the very back seat, so to somewhat curl up, laying down, then any seat will do. I usually will then go for a window seat and lean my arm up so I can fall asleep holding my head in my propped up arm. Perhaps it may look quite funny when seen from aside as well. lol. In a car trip, I am usually driving. If I am not then I am a passenger and unless the trip is by far longer than a few hours, it is unlikely that I would fall asleep as a conversation would be likely. Overall, I can sleep almost anywhere. I don't even have to be overly tired or even tired. I can make myself fall asleep. I love to dream as well.

Hello and you are welc0ome. Thank you for your comment. I too will place a jacket or something between my head and the window as well so to eliminate the possibility of my head banging against the window. It is good to be able to make yourself fall asleep. Sometimes it is a great way to pass time.

Just like you, I don't have problems with dozing off on a bus and I also like to have a seat near the window, in case the back seat is taken. I hold my head with my hand too, or sometimes lean it against the window. In that case I have to put something between the window and my head, because banging against the window glass may really hurt. It's good that you can make yourself fall asleep, because it helps you out in situations when you need to wait for something for a long time, remaining in one place all the time. Thanks for answering!:)

Hi Biomechanoid! (Are you a fan of bioman?^^) I sleep on the bus or car during a long travel. Doesn't matter what position I'm in because I'm just a sleepyhead. But that's only during long travel. Like at least an hour. Because if it's short, I would try to be awake during the entire time. What's ironic is, even if it's a hot day and I'm riding a jeepney, I would feel sleepy. It's like the heat gets me sleepy. And I don't even like the heat. And I just can't understand why I get sleepy in a hot day.^^

Yeah, me too. I sometimes doze off during short travels even with the intense heat. I guess that's because of the air. And at home, I can't sleep properly if it's hot.^^

Hey, secretbear! Actually I've never heard about Bioman I am more like fan of a PC game, Serious Sam, where creatures called Biomechanoids were present I also fall asleep during long travels, sometimes I even tend to doze off during short bus rides. When I am on a trip, heat makes me very sleepy and uncomfortable too. Things are different when I am trying to get some sleep at home, because then the excessive heat can really disturb my sleep. That's strange Thanks for your answer!:)

Car, train or bus, television or computer, I can fall asleep anywhere. And I will also wake up with my mouth open and quite often I'll be drooling. The important thing to note here is that if you are a passenger in a car on a long distance trip it is your responsibility to stay awake and keep the driver from drifting off to sleep.

It's good that you have no problems with dozing off anywhere and anytime. I also agree with you, that passenger should provide the driver with company, act as a conversation partner so the driver won't fall asleep during the trip. It's also good, if the passenger has a driving license, because it offers an opportunity to change drivers, so that one could have some rest while other is driving. Thanks for feedback!:)

hahaha I usually do. Even in short trips like and hour or 30 minutes? I always sleep on the way. My husband keeps on complaining why I am always sleeping while in the car. I don't know why it is really nice to close our eyes when we are riding? hehehe.. My hubby is worried that I might sleep while driving hahaha!!! that's sacry

I like to close my eyes even for a while too. Perhaps your husband complains because he wants some company, somebody to talk to, but there is no use of talking to a sleeping beauty! But if it comes to sleeping when driving the car, then he has right to be worried about it. Thanks for responding!:)

Sometimes I'm able to fall asleep but I can rarely stay asleep. I find it uncomfortable for one thing and for another I tend to be a rather nervous passenger so I like to watch the road at all times. My husband, on the other hand, falls asleep almost instantly if he's a passenger. All those years spending two hours a day on the school bus kind of conditioned him to sleep in a moving vehicle.

Well, ability to fall asleep in uncomfortable conditions varies greatly from person to person. There are people who can sleep in almost any environment and the ones that can't fall asleep anywhere but in their bed. Thanks for sharing your experience!:)

as much as possible I don't want to sleep in a public vehicle, like a bus or public utility van.I am afraid that someone might take advantage and steal my wallet or something.I try to keep an active eye and look around the bus or van to see who moves suspiciously.I can sleep when I am riding with a friend in his/her car.

It's a wise choice to keep your eyes open for pickpockets on the bus. You may never know if there are any on the bus or not. Thanks for responding!:)

I could sleep in a car if I was tired enough, but I usually can't. As for buses, I've only ever tried sleeping on a school bus and I ended up with a headache from my head banging against the window. Now PLANES... planes are very hard to sleep in.

I agree, it's hard to sleep on a bus because it bumps quite a lot on the road. I've also experienced the same problem like you mentioned. One time I got my neck hurting badly, because when I fell asleep, my head leaned to the side and shook pretty hard. I've never traveled by plane, so I can't share my experience on that one. Thanks for feedback!:)

Hahahaha. I can sleep easily on a trip, whether it be bus, car or plane.. Specially if I'm really really tired, I can just sit down, pay my fare, and after 5 minutes I'll be asleep. hehehee. I also feel what you feel, like my head starts to bob, and I would suddenly wake up when my body is leaning to one side already. Hehehehe.

Oh yeah, I think I could even sleep on a bare ground too, in case I was really tired. But when sleeping on a moving bus, you may sometimes experience quite odd positions of waking up. You may lean to the sides or forth or find yourself leaning on the person sitting by your side. Thanks for your answer!:)

Falling out of ones seat may look hilarious, I think his behavior after falling out was funny to watch too!

Hahahaha. Thankfully I have not experienced waking up and realizing that I already made my seatmate a pillow. hahaha. My boyfriend on the other hand had an experience where he fell out of his seat because he fell asleep on a bus. hahaha. that was really a funny sight.

Well, my friend! I usually don't sleep while on a journey by bus/car/train. I prefer to be seated by the window to feed my eyes with different natural scenarios. But when I get very tired, I unknowingly fall into a short sleep and wake up by a sudden bump or shake. Sometimes I lean aside on my co-passenger. Then It turns quite embarrassing for me and I apologize to him/her. I've never had the opportunity to travel by a plane, let alone sleeping. I think sleeping on a plane is very comfortable. Have a nice sleep.

Hey, mate! Sorry for a late response. I see what you mean, I also like to enjoy a great view if such is available. But if it's a routine bus trip through the lands I've already seen many times, I prefer to kill my boredom with a little sleep too. And yes, like you said, leaning on your co-passenger may be really embarrassing, especially if it's a strange person. Just like you, I've never had a chance to fly, but I imagine that one could have a pretty comfortable and peaceful sleep during flight, unless you don't fly on a fighter jet! Thanks for responding again!:)

I really cant sleep while travelling on a car or during a bus trip. On a plane I fall asleep easily, but on road its impossible :S. Doesnt matter how much time it takes the trip...5 hours or 15 hours, and at night... i cant.

I've never flied by plane, but I bet it's way more comfortable to sleep on board the plane, than on the bus or car. It's less bumping and shaking. But yes, some people can't even have a short nap when traveling by bus or car. Thanks for sharing!:)

its no prob with me, i can sleep on bus/car, even that's a public one. unless i don't know the route very well. i will try my best to keep my eyes open if that so. but if that is the usual route, or i'm in a tour or go with the family (which mean the car/bus is safe), i can just sleep in sitting position. quite not comfortable, and risky to have a pain in the neck when i wake up tho.

Same thing with me: if the route is unknown for me and I don't ride until the very end of the line, I try to keep my eyes open for any signs that mark the right stop. Otherwise, I am very likely to fall asleep in case I'm not having a conversation with somebody. Still it's quite uncomfortable to sleep on a bus.

It's hard for me to sleep in a car or bus, especially at night. When I take Greyhound, I sit near the front and want to make sure the bus driver stays awake. I don't like sitting in the front seat of a car and will make sure I stay awake during night trips. I just don't trust people mainly because I've been in two situations where the driver fell asleep.

Well, it looks like you feel uncomfortable to fall asleep during the ride because of these situations you've mentioned. I think it would be horrible to be on a car or bus when driver suddenly falls asleep. I don't travel at night very often, so I don't have such phobia. Thanks for answering!:)

I seem to always fall asleep when in a car and we are going a long distance. It's not comfortable though! I prop my head on a window and stuff a blanket under my chin so it won't open on me. I have never been on a bus trip so I don't know if I would be able to sleep on one or not. The only other thing that I can somewhat sleep in for a trip would be in a plane. Since they will give you a pillow and blanket it is very easy to fall asleep, as long as you are not taking off or landing. But I seem to sleep okay in both a car and plane, at least for a good half hour to hour time.

Yes, I agree, it's not comfortable to sleep in a car. I don't like sleeping in sitting position at all. I've never flied, but I've had many bus trips. I can say that you can have a pretty nice nap if you're sitting in the last row of seats alone, so you can lie down on them. I usually practice such method when being on long bus trips and these last seats aren't occupied. Anyway, thanks for responding!:)

I always sleep in a bus or a car except when i go through a new place which i haven't visited before.Because I want to see new places all the time. But long trips in buses and cars are really boring.I try to sleep when i get bored.I feel it's somewhat uncomfortable to sleep in buses and cars, but better in cars when i was alone in the backseat of the car.

I also like to see new places, so if there are any of these on my way, I try to keep my eyes open for them. Otherwise I just sleep if it's a long trip. I also agree that it's slightly more comfortable to sleep on the backseat of the car, there is more privacy, than on a bus and you can also take more comfortable positions there. Thanks for responding!:)

I am able to sleep while in a car or on a bus when I know the people that I am sitting with. But, if I am sitting next to someone that I don't know, then sleeping is not a possibility at all. I will typically slouch against the person that is next to me and use them as a pillow. It definitely isn't the best quality sleep that I've ever experienced, but I think the lack of stimulation around me is the thing that makes me do this.
• Estonia
25 Apr 10
Well, same with me. If I am sitting alone in the bus or there is a person I know by my side, I am feeling free to fall asleep. But if there is a strange person sitting close to me, I usually try to avoid falling asleep in order to avoid leaning on the co-passenger. When I'm going by car, it is no problem to sleep there. Thanks for your answer!:)

Usully i travel by train in 2tier air conditioned coach, this is most comfortable in day or night journeys, very rarely i move by bus, i have to if the place is not connected by train, we have 'sleeper coach' buses, it has some thing similar like the berths in trains, we have comfortable 'push-back' type seats in long distance buses, i prefer that, though costly... Thanks for sharing. Welcome always. Cheers. Prof

Hey, Prof! I agree, traveling by train is very comfortable. There aren't many disturbing factors, except noise and a little vibration, but that's not too bad. The atmosphere is still suitable for sleeping. I bet that it's also pleasing to travel by that type of bus, that you were talking about too. Thanks for sharing your experience, all the best!:)

Yeah I do. Especially when my class starts at 7 am and ends at 5:30 pm. Then I'll have to travel from our house to school at around one and a half hours. So I make a total of 3 hours of travel per day just to go back and forth school.

Ouch, 3 hours of travel seems to be quite annoying. Your decision to fill some of that time with taking a nap is a good idea! If I was you, I would surely act the same way. Thanks for answering!:)

I have no problems either sleeping on a bus trip or a car trip, i do it quite freqantly acutally, for example five months ago the top 50 students of my year went on an exscursion to Tasmania, i was one of them. We all stayed up to the early hours of the morning and when we were on the move we all slept on the buss, it was quite funny the teachers said they never had a bus of Teenagers so quiet in her life.

Well, please accept my congratulations! Tasmania must be a really beautiful place. The situation you described is familiar to me too. I also used to go on a class trip abroad and everyone was staying up till the early morning. When we headed out to a next destination, the bus was quiet like there were no people inside. Everyone was sleeping and the ones that didn't tried not to disturb the sleepers. Thanks for responding!:)

I understand, what you mean. It's like you don't want to miss anything during the trip. I used to be like that when I was younger, but now, when I'm traveling on a well-known route, I am more likely to fall asleep, because I've seen the surroundings for many times.
