What is the longest time you have stayed awake for?

What is the longest time that you have gone without sleep? I need at least 7 hours sleep to function and by 9pm I am very tired. But I do not think I have ever stayed awake for a whole day. I think the longest would have been waking up around 5 or 6 am then going to bed around midnight or very early hours of the morning but I am fighting sleep by 10pm at the latest, so that ddoes not seem like a long time. What the longest you have gone without sleep?

From last friday night till that saturday night at round about 1:30 am. We were counting wild and it is best to do it either early in the morning or late at night. A lot of fun but very tiring as well.

Wild animals. As in Giraffe, Kudu, Blue wildebeest, and all sort of different kind of buck you get. Friends of us have a wild reserve and we count the animals once a month, to make sure no poachers get near them. TATA.

When we get snow I could be awake for 48 hours plowing so my customers are happy. I live on 5 hour energy drinks and coffee when it snows and that helps me to stay awake and pay attention to what I am doing.

Yeah, when you own your own business you have to make sacrifices to get the jobs done. While I would not let my employees drive for over 8 to 10 hours at a time I will because it is my responsibility to make sure everything gets done right.

Sounds like you are a very good boss and business owner.

Wow that's really amazing for me, I have never had to do it, survive on maybe 1 or 2 hours sleep yes but not going more than 24 hours without sleep. But I guess if I had to get something done I would find the strength and resource to do it.

I have gone with about 25 to 26 hours straight without sleep. It was due to packing for a move. This has happened more times then I care to remember. One time was dealing with getting rid of my mom and dad stuff when they were moving from NY to Florida. We had a limited time and we had four floors to deal with. My mom was a bit of a packrat. So I easily stayed up many time over 24 hours at that period of time. I probably also did it because of attending parties that lasted longer then excepted. I really hate when this happens because my body clock gets out of rack not to mention that I'm grouchy if I don't get enough sleep.

Totally agree our body get so confused, drained and out of sync when we go for a long time without sleep. Apparently if a human went to live without sleep it could kill them but I am not sure how long it would be. Also people are said to start hallucinating after going x amount of days without sleep. Sleep is so important to keep us ticking over - it is regenetrative and restorative.

I have been up for more than 24 hours at one point, but by then my head is already spinning and my mood isn't so jolly as I usually am. I only let that happen when there's something really important that's happening, otherwise I'd follow my body when it tells me to sleep.

That's true! your body definitely needs to regenerate so if it means it has to be the next day then it will tell you so. it's more on the quality of sleep though, not just the quantity all the time.
17 Feb 10
That sounds very sensible because going without sleep is not a good idea and even though it is said that you can never catch up on sleep I read an article recently by a doctor who said that if you miss out on sleep then you do in a sense need to catch up bexause you need to sleep longer the next night for your body to adjust and recuparate.

I can last up to 24 hours when I was still in College. The longest time I have stayed awake was during College. I was graduatng during that time. I did not sleep for more than 24 hours to finish our group thesis. The unexpected happened. We're almost done with our papers but then something happened and all our files were lost. We have to start from the scratch. We did everything for more than half day and then when we were about to print our papers my groupmate's printer malfunctioned. We have no choice but for me to go home which is more than 2 hours away from my groupmate's house. I still have to go to the mall to buy an Ink for our printer. Travel was almost one hour because of the traffic. After I arrived home I realized I don't know how to place the ink inside the printer so I have to wait for my youngest brother. My brother arrived after almost three hours and helped me with the printer. I had to print out 1000 pages and three copies of our thesis so that was 3000 pieces. While I was printing I noticed that Three Chapters of our group papers were missing. I was already exhausted but have no choice but to re-write the Three Chapters. I finished everything including the proof reading, editing and lay- outing aside from the printing at around 8 a.m. the next day. Then, I rushed to the school's Shopping Center for book binding. The thesis has to be submitted at exactly 12:00 noon that day. I dreaded that day and swore it will never happen again. I felt like a zombie during that time and it seemed like my whole body was numb especially my mind. I was so disoriented. Good thing we no longer have class so I spent the whole day sleeping and woke up the next day still feeling so drained, sleepy and exhausted.

What a hectic day - there was probably too much of on adrenaline rush for you to sleep. How long didi you sleep for after that?

It was one hell of a day! hahaha! I slept the whole day and then woke up the next day for lunch so that's almost 24 hours I guess. I was so hungry after I woke up that I ate thrice as much as my regular meal consumption.

I think the longest I have gone with out sleep is probably 72+ hours or something like that. I remember a span of something like three days where I got absolutely no sleep. I'm a pretty bad insomniac and for some reason it was really bad those couple of days. Maybe too much sugar or something like that.

Is caffiene a culprit? Sometimes I find it difficult to sleep if I have had a lot of caffeine during the day to help me stay awake because of a late night the previous night, but the trouble is by the time I go to bed I have been too alert to sleep :(

I've stayed awake for 36 hours in Las Vegas. I just couldn't leave the casino and all that money and glitz. It was the most exciting time of my life. When I'm having fun I can stay awake for a long time. I only get sleepy when I'm bored.
18 Feb 10
They do say that it very addictive in Vegas so it is in line with you have said, you probably did feel tired because of the adrenaline rush and excitement. I think when you are having fun you forget about tiredness, it is only afterwards if you stop that you realise.

Hello Ros, Ive went for 3 days without any sleep at all when my mom was in the hospital. I didnt want to leave her side so I stayed until I was sure she was out of danger and then my sister replaced me. Its been the longest 3 days of my life and I couldnt even fall asleep once I got home. I was too worried. They say you can start hallucinating when you go without sleep for a long period of time. Im lucky it didnt happen to me. I was probably under too much stress.
17 Feb 10
Hey your brain was probably so focussed and the issues you were facing that you did not hallucinate. I find it very difficult to sleep as well when I have alot on my mind. I lay awake for what seems like hours trying to forget the issues and fall asleep but it is really difficult so it must have been really hard for you.

i have been there just sleeping for 1 or 2 hours . once i have stayed without sleeping for the whole night and the next day too that is have not slept for 48 hours . that happened when i was in my high school and there was one important examination and a important cricket match too . i cant give up both things so i studied all through the night and i watched the match the next day fully and i continued studying the following night too . the best part of it is that the team i supported won the match and i also got a centum in that examination . it was a memorable two nights of my life . other than that i have stayed awake for many nights just by sleeping for 1-2 hours .

Well it was definitely worth it in the end for you then.

The longest time that I have stayed awake was 36 hours. I was one of four support persons for a technical support line in our company. I started my week on a Sunday. We have a 12 hour shift for the first 3 days and an 8 hour shift for the 4th day. The one replacing me on the Sunday night felt sick. I was on the Sunday morning schedule and I need to go home for Monday morning's shift. Since I went on leave before that, I took the opportunity when they asked if anybody could man the Sunday evening so that my leave would not be held against my sick leave. So I went straight from 9am Sunday til 9pm Monday.

About 24 hours. And it was excruciating. I was having a difficult time sleeping and I just decided one day..forget.. I am staying up. LOL! I made it about a whole 24 hours and I was just exhausted, grumpy, tired, cranky, and in desperate need of sleep time. When I finally did go to sleep... I didn't get out of bed for 2 days!
17 Feb 10
Wow 2 days but I am not surprised your body need to recuperate...lol

I once went about 36 hours without sleep as I was travelling and I found it difficult to sleep on the bus / plane than I travelled on. I felt very ill afterwards and I had a headache and an upset stomach for a couple of days.
17 Feb 10
I find it hard to sleep when travelling - it can be very uncomfortable. I am not surprised that you felt unwell afterwards, the lack of sleep and the stress that travelling can put on the body must have really affected your immune system.

for me, a think around 34 hours, that's the longest time that I was not able to sleep straight last december because my friends whose working in other places went back home and I still have to report for work. but several times I experienced sleeping for an hour or two in a day for 4 to 5 days.
17 Feb 10
That is quite a while and also to run on 1 or 2 hours sleep for that length of time as well. I would probably have to sleep for a week after that...lol

I went to a friends party. I woke up 10 in the morning that day and I went to sleep 1300 hours the next day. So that totals up to 27 hours without sleep. Pretty good right?
