Have you ever refused medical treatment before?

I have never refused medical treatment before. I have always accepted it when I needed it. I think it would be stupid to refuse medical treatment when you need it. Because if there is something wrong with you it needs to be taken care of despite the costs. Usually if you cannot afford medical exspense there are places that will help you pay for medical care or work with you on paying it. There are even charities at some hospitals that are very helpful. I have gotten assistance from them and it was so helpful. All I did was fill out paperwork and show them pay stubs of my income. I waited a couple of weeks and they accepted me and paid my bill. My advice to anyone would be to not refuse medical care and get help if you need it. The help is there if you ask.

Yes I have refused once the medical treatment even though it needed. Once I had a scratch on my left hand while i was riding on my bike by the side of a local bus. The bus came to me so close that its front wheel cover, a broken iron sheet scratched my left hand and it was bleeding. I got to nearby private hospital just for a bandage so that the flow of blood stops. The man at the counter asked me to pay Rs.400/-in Indian currency (about $8 US dollars. Courtesy demands to help free medical aid in such emergency. Later I had few antibiotic tablets besides an antiseptic injection. It healed in a weeks time and it cost me just less than a half dollar. So people should not try to use an occasion always with money motive.

When I first did my back about 4 years ago what they wanted to give me was an epidural in my back near my spine to help with the pain. Now I refused this because although theoretically it would have helped ease the pain it wasn’t a cure and would only mask the pain meaning I could be doing more serious damage without realising it. Unfortunately I learned that unless I agreed to the Epidural they wouldn’t offer me the proper treatment which could have cured my back problem. So eventually I had to agree to it which I must add neither the Epidural or the surgery on my spine having helped. But I would say is to consider all the options and effects of any medical care offered to you as sometimes is not always the best form of treatment but is offered because it is almost a set formula of general practice without consideration to the actual patients needs.

Yes many times. I believe in natural method. For me medicines are artificial methods. The reason that we get sick is because of poor surroundings and pollution. If you live in rural area with fresh air theirs a little chance that you get sick. But if you live in a city and with a lots of pollution then you need tons of vitamins just to remain healthy. Also diet is the main reason why many people have hypertension and high cholesterol level and other disease and sickness.

Yes I have refused a medical treatment before when I was pregnant. I was afraid of taking any medication of fear of hurting my baby. During pregnancy there are so many things to avoid and be careful about even medication that you think can help you can hurt an innocent and fragile child in your womb.

Everyone of us has the right to refuse or not to refuse any medical treatments. It is a matter of choice. Most that I know of refusing is that they have issues with medications being administered to them. You know your body very well. If your body does not respond to the treatment the doctors are giving you, you refuse to it and tell them, besides it is your body. About medical assistance or medicare, well this really helps us, whether we like to use our benefit or not, it is up to you because you are the one responsible to pay for it. Likewise, it is wise to use it because if we are to take care of our own body, then why should we be so stingy about it. As for me, I have only refused facial treatments from a dermatologist even if I know I can use my health card for it, i still insist not to use it because it is only a petty issue for me. I chose to use the medical card on much more better usage like prenatal check ups.

It was not a medical treatment that I refused, but a prescription that I refused to get. After a tooth extraction, the dentist prescribed Vicodin for the pain. Instead of getting Vicodin, I used the Tylenol that I had at home. Vicodin is too strong for the pain that I had anticipated after the anaesthetic wore off. I felt that Tylenol was sufficient for that purpose. Lucky me, I didn't even have to take the Tylenol. Self-medication can put a person's life in jeopardy. Refusing medical treatment is not a good idea. There are instances when there is no other recourse but to seek professional help. "Follow what I say, do not follow what I do," hehe. Have a great day, tuckersheri.

I've been refusing medication ever since. I have never gone to the dentist, because I am afraid of needles. I do not want to go to the doctor though right now now I am sick. There are complications which I am feeling and still do not want check ups. I am so freakin afraid of doctors.

Hi tuckersheri! I would like to thank you for posting such an interesting discussion. I personally don't have any experience that I refused to a medical treatment, but let me take this opportunity to tell you a story. My beloved grandma was hospitalized two years ago due to pain in the stomach. She was scheduled for an endoscopy (a procedure that they stick a long tube down your throat to visualize the intestines) and she refused to do it. money is no problem, coz my mom and aunts are willing to pay for the costs. but she was fearful of this procedure and we respected it and let her have her way. after a year, she was hospitalized again because of the same pain. The doctor said she should have an endoscopy to know what's causing her pain. and it turned out she have gastric ulcer, and it's getting worse. Now, she's in the hospital again because of her recurring disease, and we are still waiting for the doctor's final diagnosis. There's a big chance that it is a type of cancer. but we're still waiting for the lab results. Mylotters, I love my grandma so much and as you read my post, I'm asking everyone to say a little prayer for my grandma for her fast recovery and negative test results. Lesson learned: don't refuse a medical treatment or else, it's gonna be too late. seek the advice of doctors and family before making a big decision.

I did it when i am very little. At that time, the medicine and every piece of medical equipment make me feel frightened. so every time I refuse to accept any treatment. but now I never do it. I will seek every kind of medicine or ways that make well as soon as possible. as the feeling is bad when you are sick. If the sickness worsen, that will get worse results. so I will try my best to make me well if I am sick.haa. best wishes.

I refused medical treatment once. My mom asked if I wanted to see a doctor about this nagging cough I had during flu season one year. I refused because A.) I knew she wasn't serious with the question. I've never seen a doctor because i had a cold. My immune system isn't at the point where coughing and sneezing a bit is cause for alarm. And B.) I had plenty of NyQuil to subdue me long enough to sleep the sickness away. When I had to get stitches that one time because I got hit in the face with a baseball bat, I was happy to receive medical assistance. Maybe happy isn't the right word. I didn't want the pain, blood and pain to remain in my eyebrow area, so the doctor was something I was willing to deal with for that point and time.

Speaking of self medication, I am a man of it. I don't go to hospital except for vaccination and surgery. It is really odd but that is the way my parents do it. They heal me through medicine and care for me. I am happy that my mother is like that than going to hospital and pay enormous bills which doesn't include medicine they suggest. It is good for big sickness but not for fever, colds, cough and other common sickness :D
