Who fixes your computer problems?

For the last week my computer has not been behaving. Actually, getting online and being able to deal with my e-mail has been the main problem. Thankfully, I have a friend who will fix my computer if I'm having a issue. He's a genius with computers, and he won't let me pay him. Which is good because I couldn't afford to. Who fixes your computer when you have problems? I know I'm blessed to have someone help me with mine. Anyone else have friends who help them out when they have computer issues?

My computer has been sick with a ransomware bug for a month. We have a neighbor who said he'd look at it, but with a full time job, college and a family, he just hasn't had time. We've been able to use my step-daughter's when she isn't upset about something, so being able to use it is the exception, not the rule. Better bake your friend some cookies and hold on to him (lliterally...lol). He's a good friend to keep.

I am totally non-tech. I have been using a computer since the earliest models, but I often say I know nothing about them. I know one program (MS Publisher) inside out, back to front and upside down, but I am useless with anything else. I do all my design work, books, invitations, brochures, everything on Publisher. My five sons are all VERY computer literate. One is a systems analyst and another is a web site designer. The inconvenient part of that is distance. My sons live a four hour drive to a 12 hour drive to a whole day flight away - but thankfully a lot can be achieved via the phone. For hardware problems, the place where I buy my computer and equipment is VERY good to me. Astrabyte Computers look after me very well, and if I have a problem Simon is usually able to come straight away and get me going.

It's too bad he can't get a job doing that. With his skills it sounds like he would be in high demand.

My husband and I try to fix it ourselves. Normally, if one of us can't figure it out, the other one can. If neither of us can solve the problem, I first call my Mom, who is a little more knowledgable about computers than I am. If that doesn't work, my husband has a cousin who works on computers and we give him a call. I am thankful that we do have a couple of people whom we can call fo rhelp with issues if we need to.

Most of the time I fix it myself. I've had a personal computer since the mid 80's, so I've been learning a lot over the years. If I get stumped on something, I ask my son-in-law, and if we're really stumped, we'll ask my brother who does computer tech stuff for a living. I too feel blessed to have somebody right in the family who can help! And like your friend, my family refuses to let me pay and just will help out of the kindness of their hearts:-)

Well if the problem would not be a hardware problem then I usually solve it by myself. I have everything to check on software problem and if it needs a formatting and reinstalling I guess I can do that by myself. For hardware problem which rarely happens to me I consult to a computer technician.

I don't have computer at home. I have one at the office. the one who fixed it was our computer engineer. If he was not available , we will hire someone from the shop to fix it. When I have my computer soon, i wish I can be able to fix it myself or I will hire someone to fix it too. Or I will deliver it in a computer shop to be fix. YOu are very lucky to have a friend who can fix it anyway.

Hey Amber Sis! I also have a wonderful friend who is a computer genius! He does all my fixing and more! He doesn't charge me anything either! We do each other "favors"! He is like my "adopted son/nephew! I told you about him before! He is a Manager of a Staples Store! He gave me a Sony Digital Camera, slightly used, a laptop, refurbished, fixed my desktop computer when the maintaince men killed it, give me coupons to shop in Staples so I can buy stuff for free, is giving me a brand new printer, scanner, copier, all in one for free, and so many other things just because...

I fix my own computer, as well as my GFs computer, and her friends computer. If it gets virus infected to the point that nothing I do other than wiping the system will help well then that's what I do. They charge WAY too much around here for us to take our computers to them. Plus since I build my own computers anyway it's just easier for me to fix whatever happens to be wrong with them.

I imagine they are glad they know someone who does this work and they can trust not to rip them off. It's kind of like a mechanic. If one doesn't know the extent of the problem, one doesn't know if they are paying too much!

I have taught myself how to fix my computer and can manage with most hardware and software problems. The greatest problems is usually the disk getting fragmented, so it is important that I remember to do a defrag at least once a month before it slows down too much. I have also had a couple of hard drives die on me, and it is quite easy to fit new ones and reinstall windows again, and I have added extra memory, which was quite easy too. All this is easy to do on a desktop, but I have a laptop for when I go away, and that is difficult because it is so small. But I would have a try and fix it if it went wrong.. _Derek

Here in the Philippines techies are just everywhere. When my computer was infected by viruses, I went to a computer repair shop and had it reformatted. As of now, I try to learn basic trouble shooting so I wont have to pay anymore when I have problems with my computer. Thanks to my friend who is an IT student.
