Cell Phone Ring Tones

I was looking at "Law and Order", my favorite TV show. The were talking about ring tones that kids use that adults over 30 can't hear. This tone is supposed to be so loud to young ears as to be piercing.
Well I did some investigating and found out it is absolutely true. The tone is called the mosquito tone. I even found proof. I tested my hearing and you can too.

I could hear up to 14 hz, how about you? Be careful, your pets can hear all the tones.

I have had these ringtones for a while. Used them while I was in high school. Had to put my phone on vibrate in elementary and middle school. Which sucked sometimes when I forgot.... but never had my phone taken away for more than 2 hours haha.
the mosquito ringtone is pretty good for texting in a boring class in high school. Can wake up some people in class and you know you got a message.lol.

The news in my area reported on this a while back. The goal of this tone is to be used in alarm system to scar off kids that might be trying to rob stores. They would use it in places where vandels commonly hang around to diswade them from trying to pull anything. And, should they, the sound would be so disabeling it would help athorities catch the would-be theives.

They had it out for a while. I don't think it has anything to do with the loudness of the sound but rather, it has to do with the pitch level of the sound. Studies have shown that as people get older, our ability to pick up higher pitched noice go down. Here's some simple test. http://www.ultrasonic-ringtones.com/.
