Picking food while cooking

I love to cook but I constantly lift up the lid and stir & pick at the food. By the time it's done I already ate almost a plate full. Can you cook without picking at your food constantly?

that's always the case when one cooks. but what is abnormal about the whole thing -- tasting while cooking -- is going beyond what is food tasting. a plateful, of course is not the right amount for tasting what you are cooking. a plateful is already eating in advance. probably, it takes more food for you before you really get the taste of the food you are cooking...

Hiya missybear, I fix it so that I don´t have to keep going in and out of the Kitchen or sit there watching the pot boil. I can´t always do this but if I can get away with it I will. Chips is an annoying thing to cook as you have to be in and out of the Kitchen to make sure they don´t get scorched have had a few near misses with that one. Although I am around the House I put everything in order and then go adding the next bit and the next bit and timing it but I don´t really need to be in the Kitchen then as I´m usually busy doing Housework in between.

It's just a bad habit of mine and my computer sits right next to the kitchen so i can see everything cooking.

Hiya Missybear, That´s a great thing to have but would not go down well in this House I have to sneak on here sometimes when no one is bothered what you are doing and if you are doing food you can forget it as they will stand in the Doorway reminding you of everything they can think of so I have given that up. So I can only have peace and quiet when they have all gone out or asleep. Don´t worry I win the Battle most of the time. Today I should be doing chips but I will do anything to get out of doing it so have thought of something else much better and easier for me and easier on my pocket and also the cleaning time too. Also I hate doing chips as they always take them for granted I don´t have chip frying pan I have to use and ordinary one so they have had their "chips" for today as I am not doing any no way Jose.

Yeah, I often eat soooo much that I shouldn't have a meal afterward either. Taste-testing does take a long time.

And a lot of food. Got to season, taste, add this and that. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

Most of the time i can wait. I just need to taste if saesoning is needed and/or how much to use. However recently i was craving onion rings. I made onion rings, french fries and fried fish. I cooked the onion rings first. Most were eaten while i was cooking and i didnt have much room for everything else. I saved most for my next meal. Those onion rings were so melt in my mouth good. Fresh and homemade. Mmmmmmm!!!

hahaha!! I think most people who love to cook keep on picking at the food because they want to taste whether it needs more spices or salt or what? Picking at the recipe you cook is one way of testing if the recipe taste good or not or what it lacks to make it taste delicious. That is just natural.

I love cooking and I will admit to doing a few taste testing after adding spices and such but I don't really eat more then a few teaspoons while it is cooking. I think I test the homemade spaghetti sauce more then anything since I add a few spices here and there and taste after a few minutes of adding..but still not to much. my brother though he will eat while cooking and eats alot..while cooking..that is why when I am there I like to do the cooking. I also change or clean spoons each time if someone other then myself is going to be eating it. But darn it..sometimes it taste so good ya just don't wanna wait or your hungry and those few spoonfuls help tide you over till it is finished.

I think you're right about the Spaghetti sauce. That's 1 of my favorite foods to cook and pick at. It gets better the longer you cook it so you have to keep tasting it.

Hello missybear, I have never been a picker while cooking, except when making lasagna, after cooking the ingredients and putting the layers together while the lasagna is in the oven, I take all of the left over ingredients and place them in a bowl, zap it in the microwave and eat it. Not sure if it classifies as picking, but when the lasagna is done and everyone sits down to eat I'm obviously not hungary at all. Besides taking a test to see if more spice is neded when cooking that is the limit to my picking while cooking for all dishes except lasagna.

At least you have it narrowed down to one thing...I love lasagna but you can't really pick at it once it's in the oven

Hello missybear, Oh, that's opposite of me! I don't pick at the food while cooking. I will cook and taste and sometimes, I even ask my husband to taste the food for me. But, I do like to eat and if I do like you do, I think there is no more left to serve for my husband and kid

Hi Missybear, That happens to me a lot....lol...first I get it started and then the aroma kicks in; and when that happens I can't resist, so I start in and like you say; I have eaten a plate full when it's done.

Depending on what you are cooking it is necessary to taste. If you are planning on sharing a meal it is best that you do not pick and this habit can easily be broken. If you are eating alone just be sure to make enough food to have some left over for another meal and then you can have a plateful later :-)

Hi Missybear, I only taste the food to check if i already made it--the taste, all the ingredients needed to be put in. when i am already happy about it i refrain from picking foods while cooking because i will not be able to enjoy it when it's alrteady served. i want to eat and have more when it's done.

Hey friend. I'm not a regular cook. But when I get to cooking something, I don't pick up the lid constantly. I've got experience watching my mother's cooking and that's why I can make an idea when to pick up the lid. My guess about cooking time is quite turn out to be true. I can cook some food quite perfectly without picking the lid constantly. Have a nice cooking.

I agree with Pocket that most of my picking is to see if it taste alright or needs more of something added, now around the holidays I make some things that I just can't help but pick at as I cook. But I try to stay out of it most of the time till it is done. Some times that is hard to do if it is something you really like.

It's actually bad cooking etiquette. You should only taste it when you're done with it. I do taste the food I'm cooking but only at the end. My aunt is fond of that too, and it annoys me when I'm cooking and she keeps on lifting the lid to taste. Lifting the lid actually destroys the process because the heat is constantly changing once you open the lid up. Not to mention that moisture escapes. I think tasting frequently is okay when you're cooking for yourself, but if you're cooking for the family or a lot of people, I don't think that doing such a habit is good.

This is the only way to taste the food and make sure it has enough flavour. Also if you continue to pick at it, it means it tastes yummy and is fabulous to eat. I dont cook much but I do like picking at foods while they are cooking. I try not to pick to much otherwise I wont want to eat any when the meal is ready!! You should be allowed to taste the food as you are the one slaving over it and cooking it!!

I did the same thing when I was cooking all the time...my b/f has taken that over..lol..I actually gained some weight for a while after he took over because I wouldn't eat a plate when I would pick here and there. By the time dinner was finished, I was full.
