Boys Need a Dog!

When we found ourselves raising two little boys, we came to a place when we knew they needed a dog at about the same time the hurricanes along the Gulf Coast made a lot of dogs homeless. We went to a shelter and let the boys pick out their dog. They chose a yellow lab about a year and a half old and weighing nearly a hundred pounds. They named him Buccanneer. It was a tremendous decision. The dog had a home and our boys responded as I had hoped. It is not uncommon to look out in the back yard and see either one or the boys laying on the ground, either with his head on Buc or Buc's head on the boy. There is no way to place a value on that relationship and responsibility!

My hubby grew up always having a dog. I never had a pet of any sort (my dad objected, my mom grew up on a farm and didn't view animals as house-pets, and I had a wicked fear of dogs). I outgrew the fear and we've had a dog (occasionally two) all throughout our marriage, so our kids grew up loving and being loved by dogs. Now I can't imagine NOT having a dog in the family.

I did not realize you'd had a fear of dogs early in life, Inklings (it is nice to address that name again!). I have always loved dogs--but they have never become house guests for me. They stay outside.
