Have you ever accidentally opened the facebook chatbox? As a matter of fact, I was on facebook just a few minutes ago and opened my chatbox options to switch it to "online" (because I had switched it to offline). After that it displayed that "no one is online" and when I went to close the box, a bunch of names popped up. Just as I was clicking, a name came up right at the spot my cursor was- it opened a chat with some guy I went to high school with and I didn't know so well. As a knee-jerk reaction, I closed my whole web browser window! w

I think everyone's default is "online"- I like to switch mine off manually when I log on, just because I do not like chatting in general. w

I like chatting, but I have to be in the mood for it... I haven't really played around with the settings in Facebook much. I just go in, leave comments, go back out pretty much.

It's the other way around for me. I don't really know her except that i accepted her friend request since we have the same family name. I also received a message from her asking about my family roots. I was chatting with a friend and i saw that she was online. I send a message saying "hi" and she's gone in a second. I thought i scared her. That got me thinking that i should not be sending messages on the chat to strangers since i could be violating their privacy. On the other hand, i feel offended too. But i can't really blame the other person. So now, i only send messages through chat if i really know them personally. For those that i don't, it's better if its through their inbox or not at all.
