My country is a religious country and they are so many different kinds of religions these religions spread the message of what they believe in and they have missionaries to help them spread the word of God. There are missionaries from different sects that I see every where. I just feel amazed of what they do because its hot outside but they still go from house to house and share the good news. But I am aware that some people are annoyed of them. How do you feel about these people? What do you think about what they do?

Yes, we have some missionaries around here, they are the Jehovah's Witnesses. They have a church right down the street from my house. I'm not a religious person, I'm an atheist, so, in a way it is kind of annoying to have to talk to them, even just for a few minutes. But, all of the people that come knocking on my door, have been really nice, and polite, and haven't pushed me too hard to join their religion. I don't feel like they've judged me, or like they're too pushy or anything. They just seem like some nice people, that believe what they're saying. So, I just be nice to them, and try to tell them politely that I'm an atheist. I'll still talk to them afterwards about things other than religion, but I don't want to talk about religion with them. It seems like people who are missionaries, have such a strong faith, that they can't really debate things with you, when it comes to the religion they are a part of. I don't think I'm right about everything I believe, I think there's a possibility I am wrong, and I'm willing to debate it. But, some religious people aren't willing to even admit there's a chance there's no god.

In my experience, I've not found that the Witness' faith is so strong so much as it's oversimplified. If you get off their programming too far, the conversation locks up. Even the experienced ones will admit there's a lot about the Bible they don't know, and it's pretty clear they don't want to go there.

I think they also dont know a lot about the Bible but their faith is strong enough that they are able to share and let people know about their faith. Their testimonies are strong enough that it could already move someone. I think that you dont have to know everything there is in the Bible cause while they are missionaries, they can even study it. Same thing with us, if we are Christian, God didnt require us to know the bible 100% but our faith is going to take us heights.

From time to time, my area will get missionaries, mainly Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons. I am a born again Christian, having one belief in God and one belief in Christ, all thanks to events that happened in my life years ago. I have to say any time they come to the door, I often ignore them and let someone else in the house deal with them. And if I must face them, I often tell them exactly what I think, which isn't always what they like to hear, even if it is said politely. I have a friend who is Mormon though, and she's not very happy with the religion at all. Kind of sad when you cannot be happy where you go, right? Besides to me, when you have the same religion as everyone else, you follow their rules. I may believe in God and in Christ, but there's a difference between me and the Christian next door. I believe in Them my own way, which makes it pretty unique. On top of that, I don't much go to church, and I read Harry Potter and watch anime. But these last few months I've not seen too many missionaries, and I have never seen a Baptist or Catholic, or Protestant missionary. It's usually Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses.

I feel bad that your friend is unhappy with her religion. I guess she really needs to have more faith and understanding about her religion. I think all religions are good but we will always have to look for something that will lead us in the right direction. Your friend is in the right tract, I hope she will be able to endure. I have friends who also belong to the same sect as your friend and they are really nice people and they have values that I really admire. I think that goes for all of us who are Christian, we should always try to be an example for others.

I think it has more to do with how she's treated within their sect. I don't know if this is true for all Mormons, but the ones she had gone to church with, always looked down on any female who didn't wear expensive clothing, and dresses, and what not. She feels that it shouldn't matter what a person wears as long as they are not indecent and properly dressed. I'm sorry, I should have been more specific about it.

I feel bad that she has to be treated like that because of what she wears. Maybe it wasnt the intention of some of the members of that sect but just tell your friend that it has nothing to do with what would people say. She's not there to worship the people and please the people with her dress anyway. She's there for a purpose, a commitment of covenant that she made with God. She should always think that it would be better to please God than to please people. I dont think God would mind if you dont have nice clothes on. Just tell her to remember her purpose in going there, I know the main reason is God. Please tell her that.

they are the worst lot. they spread hatred and speak ill of others. this is very common amongst all sects of missionaries. the recent communal violence were directly started by these missionaries. they also fund the terrorists and other such groups. i have no respect for them and their religion.

No I live in the United States and we're on of the countries that sends the missionaries out. I think it's weird to go around trying to convert people from their religion but at the same time if it's good beliefs that they are sharing then I think it's okay. I think that too many missionaries take advantage of a country when they are in need and come along promising all these beautiful things that will happen if they join their religion.

Maybe they say things like that as promises and blessings because they have experienced it themselves and just wanted to share to other people the blessings and happiness they have felt. I think its not just something to do with their religion but to what they believe in. Maybe they really wanna share it because they have tasted its sweetness and they also want to share that fruit to others. Its also a good thing I think to go to poorer areas. I think they will also get more converts there. People are more receptive than people staying in the city.

You make a good point, Jambi, and I notice that the Witnesses mostly come to poorer neighborhoods here in Sacramento.

We generally have Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons here, though now and then we get street corner evangelists/preachers downtown. I see the Mormon men on bicycles running around but haven't talked with them much. Middle aged white chicks are not high on their agenda, it seems. The Witnesses also travel in pairs and sometimes triples if they are training someone new. Oddly enough, they are generally older than I am. The few street corner evangelists vary in age; when they feel called, they preach, I guess. All in all, they seem polite enough, and I try to be polite to the Witnesses while making it clear they're wasting their time. Their view of their God is very simple, or so they would have you believe, and I generally find them annoying after awhile, though I've often wondered what their reaction to being in a true pagan gamer home would be. Maybe I'll let the next bunch in and find out.

I also think that the messages that they bring about God is really simple as you said. I just wonder because these are so simple but people find it hard to believe. Maybe the main reason for that is confusion because there are already lots and lots of religion in the world, and how would you know which one is right. I would be bothered by them and annoyed by them but if its the way for me to find the truth then I guess I would consider being bothered.

Of course, the question is, what *is* the truth? As you said, there are many religions and many sects within them. How would you try to figure out what is true?

I have to admit that a few years back when missionaries use to know my door occasionally it would annoy me a bit because they talked and talked and it use to kinda bore me. But about 3 years ago I met a missionary named Oliver that let me see and learn a lot of things about life. I was overweight back then and Oliver changed the way I thought about food. He also gave me some books and material on how to live a strong, healthy life. It really worked for me and forever changed my views on who and what the missionaries are all about.

I feel better to missionaries that knock's on our door step because its more formal than listening on the streets. I'm so glad for you that Mr. Oliver met you and you chaged your life with him as the instrument of God. Mr. Oliver only guide you but what really changed you is our God. All the glory in this world should always be with him:)

You're absolutely right. Its all because of God. He just call some instruments or servants to for His wise purpose. It also depend on the person whether he is going to open his heart for these missionaries. I think that by letting these missionaries into your home, you are also letting God in to your home.

I hope all people would have the same experience like you did when it comes to missionaries. What sect does Oliver belong to? I think he really was a very good influence in your life. There are things that he taught you and it helped you and how great is that. I also hope that people will change their views about these missionaries. I hope they would open their hearts and their minds about the messages that they bring and just people to came knocking your door to annoy you.

Yes, I see many missionaries in my city Kolkata. As it is Kolkata is blessed to be the HQ of the Missionaries of Charity established by Mother Teresa which has done a lot of good work for the city and its poor. But they don’t really go around proselytizing among the majority Hindu population of the city…rather they work among the poor and many among the poor do convert to Christianity. We have Hindu missionary organizations too but proselytizing is not allowed in Hinduism so they too work for the poor, during natural calamities and such. Christian and Hindu missionaries also run some of the best schools in the city where education is given the most importance and not overt religion.

All the Christian and Hindu missionary schools offer top grade secular education...no religious book is taught as part of the curriculum. OK they have religious hymns as part of the morning assembly, but then so did we recite "Our Father In Heaven', our national anthem and another Sanskrit hymn in our daily assembly and ours was not any religious school.

That's also one of the best things that they can offer, education. People like these are really admirable. I just wonder whether they also include religion in some of the subjects that the students need to take. I think this is also one thing that bring people together even if we have different religion we are still one in helping others.

I am not Christain so when they come to me I have my two or three words ready.Either I saw No Thank you. Or I say I'm Jewish. It had been a very long time since I have been approached but when it did happen They were Mormons. I was at the bus stop and they were about to tell me and I politely said No thanks I'm Jewish and they stopped and we discussed the weather instead. Knowing that missionaries are visitors i asked them if they had a t.v. where they were staying and told them which weatherman to watch. It was pleasant. It Doen't have to become a shouting match or a show of wills. As long as the missionary doesn't try to bully you and as long as you don't put their view down.

I hope there would be more people like you around the world. People are ought to be respected and especially missionaries. I never thought that it is their intention to annoy people. And they are visitors of that place and we should always try and respect others. There's really no need to shout or scare this people away. Respect is always important.

Hi p3ks626, I don't agree with this no matter who is doing it. They are all misguided people although I'm sure many of them believe in what they are doing. The fact that there are so many different religions and cults in the world has caused a lot of problems for people everywhere. Blessings.

I think that's also one of the disadvantages of what they are doing because sometimes they create trouble. It may not be their intention but they ought to be respected also in what they do. There are really a lot of religion in the world now and sometimes its confusing on who should we believe in. All we need to do is look for that religion that can really help us know why we are here and what are God's plans are for us.

There are missionaries in my are. Most of them are Christian missionaires. They run schools, mostly. They also run orphanages, house for old people, homes for mentally challenged, physically challenged, etc. The help these missionaries doing to the society is really valuable. I would like to mention Mother Theresa Charitable Missonaries in my country. I appreciate them for their effort of dedicating their whole life for the sake of needy and poor.

It is indeed an exceptional service they are rendering to the people in your country. They sacrifice all their time and efforts in serving others. I can tell that they are really servants of God because they never expect anything. They always serve because they love doing it. It also says in the bible that when you serve others, you are also serving other people.

I usually see these people on public places like on a bus or a jeepney (a public vehicle in the philippines). When they caught my attention with the word they share, I listen. If they ask for money, I don't give since they might use it for their living and not for the church of God. There's no wrong on what they are doing. We can't also judge tehir heart but I fear that they may share a word of God that is not right (wrong interpritation base on the bible) because they depend on their own understanding.

Good point. That's why we really have to know who should we listen to. I think when it comes to the proper authority there are some missionaries there who are given the authority not because they graduated in a prestigious school or something but an authority given to them directly from God. I think we will know who's telling the truth if we would just try and listen. Not just listen with our ears but listen with our hearts.

We live in Spain, and we get Jehovah's Witnesses here. Luckily, we live on a gated complex, so anyone who doesn't live here has to be let in. They ring the gate intercoms until someone answers, and then ask to be let in. I always refuse, as if any of our residents wanted to become Jehovah's Witnesses, they'd find the nearest Kingdom Hall for themselves. I am a Christian myself, but I don't push my faith at other people. Anyone who feels the need to tout their religion door to door like a double glazing salesman is beyond my understanding, I'm afraid.

Yes they also missionaries roaming around to spread the word of God here. Like Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons and Born Again. Last week I saw 2 Koreans I wonder what they are doing here in our area roaming around under the sun. They persevere hard to encourage people but sometimes I hate when they pushing what they believe in to us.

These missionaries have an intention to share their faith with others and that's a good thing because they are trying to share what they know, but if they would have to push it then it will surely scare people out. Maybe some missionaries push us but others dont. Maybe their intention is plain just about sharing their beliefs but sometimes people dont understand that.

Great but sometimes annoying when they would have to push people in what they believe in. For me its okay to invite people to listen to what you believe in but we also need to respect that if a person would say "no" then that would be it. Things like that should be said politely though because it could hurt other people's feeling if done impolitely.

Well, I usually don't open the door especially if it's early in the morning because I like to sleep in and at that time I look like a mess anyway..my hair looks like a bad wig and most the time I have racoons eyes so I don't want to scare them.. When I do open the door I tell them I'm in a rush and need to get dress up to go to a voodoo ceremony and that scares them away.

Haha! That would really scare them away. Some of us just say something and just anything to drive these missionaries away but some of them are still very persistent. I cant help to think for myself now that maybe they are bringing some messages that people really need to know about God, I just wonder who among all these missionaries bring the true message. I just think these is, and it could only be one among them.
