Signs of Spring

It's here, I know it is. It snowed this morning at dawn, just a dusting, but the hills around got a good cover. But the big thing is not the flowering trees or daffidils, it's the large ant migrating which happens twice a year, once in the Spring and then again in the Autumn. Why these little beasties have to go through my house twice each year I don't know. Could be we built the house in the middle of the route they have used for hundreds of years. Don't laugh, I bet they were here at that time. Enjoy and breath deeply.

The ants don't bother us here until summer. Lots of daffodils and trees in bloom though. Maybe you can send the ants to Mexico?

It's my guess Mexico has all the insects it needs. I know they have fire ants.

IN that case, send them to the chocolate covered ant factory!

Good to hear about Spring. Here in our place, Summer should be April yet, but over a month now, or maybe for two months, we have no rain. So the weatherman told, Summer could be early. But then, it's El Niño here that makes plants, animals and fishes suffer drought and there are killings to some of them. Electric power corporation also said that this is one reason for power shortage in the country. Waters in dams which is the source hydro-power plants are getting little. Your expecting Spring and Summer when it's winter, now we need rain.

El Nino has caused lack of rain here also. Even our snow level is low. It's going to be a very long hot Summer here. Our year round creek has not run since October. All this is a worry.

No sign of spring here yet but it was expected to be late after we had such a bad winter. We don't really get ants until summer. We think of signs of spring as when we start to see spring flowers.

Around here the first Spring flowers are yellow and white, they make such a wonderful contrast with the brilliant greens of new grass.

hi savypat, may be you constructed your house on their property they're being so nice to you coz they never tried to explore your ears or nose ---if they seem to be annoying for you---building a huge wall besides your house might help---atleast they would change their route coz it takes more time to climb the wall .great day.

Not had much experience with ants, have you. Ants go where they want, when they want, they dig under, go over, circumvent and pretty much obtain their goal regardless of what man does.

The frequent call of cuckoo is treated here in India as the most significant sign of spring.

Hi, Pat! I hope you're not offended that I find that fascinating. I like thinking of them making this trek twice a year, and watching their march!

What do you mean offended, I enjoy these creatures also as long as they are not in my house. You should know by now I don't offend easily. Thanks

Yes looks like you have entered into some one else's domain and you are being punished for that. Hope these intruders do not stay around for too long! It they just come for a short visit twice a year I think you could tolerate them. Or else like you say enjoy and breath deeply!

I wish I could ignore them, but once in the house they are not polite guests. They eat everything and it's no fun cooking in their areas, I swear they hear or feel the vibration when I place a pan or bowl on the counter. Sorry the welcome mat is not out for these creatures inside. As long as they stay out they can continue their trips.

Today I awoke to sunshine!! It will reach 37 today and the snow will melt some more. This weekend I may even get to move my car from the street and into my garage!! My begonia and impatiens that I am saving for spring are flowering, hooray! I can hardly wait to plant them outside! I'm SO ready for Spring!! I usually enjoy winter but this one was the second most snowy in my state. No ants yet but the birds aren't at the feeder as much.

We are heading into autumn here and I am a little bit thankful that the ants are disappearing! Each summer I have them all over my house, into the cats’ food, in the bathroom and laundry; one year I had them inside the pantry which was heartbreaking but I managed to get away with that this summer. They are horrible little creatures and so hard to get rid of! We tried boiling water in the nest which sounds terribly cruel but they were taking over the house...It was either them or us... Enjoy spring!

I bow to modern methods and use poison, the ants that stay outside are safe from me. I know they do great things for the land. And there are plenty of natural controls to keepthem off of the plants.

Our bulbs are slow this year. We put them in pots as we didn't have a patch of the new garden ready for them. But they are starting to shoot and I keep seeing their promise all around this area which is new to us at this time of year. Sorry about your ants. That's a strange story. But I guess you are used to it by now and just let them go on their way.

If they stayed out of the house I would leave them alone and just enjoy their travels, but once in the house they are in to everything so I do kill them.

Hey pat! I am ! You must be right~ You just might be living on "their" turf! I think that I'm seeing slight signs of Spring too! Or at least I think I am! I have see alot of birds flying by lately and am hearing they singing too! Or maybe it's just that I so want it to be Spring to be here already!

Our birds have started nest building, we had a bald eagle nest within a couple of miles of the ranch, but it did not survive the winter wind storm. I'll be watching to see if they rebuild it. I'd just as soon they moved further out, I worry about my barn cats with those birds so close. But they are wonderful to watch.

Momma bear - Momma bear and her 2 daughters woke up too early this year.
Canada here, spring is in the air and its way too early!! I dont usually think about my darling exterminator until mid April but Ive been thinking about him for the past 2 wks now. They say you can draw a line in chalk and the ants wont cross it. I dont know if its true, never tried it myself, Id rather have the man of my life "exterminator" spray inside and out so I dont have to go nuts thinking about those awful, terrible, yukky critters. That said, our bears came out of hibernation this week....so spring is definitely here!! Now I know God has a wicked sense of humor and he'll dump so much snow come April or even May that we'll all be caught by surprise.....its happened before a very long time ago, snow in May!! Hope you can blast the devil out of your ants who decided to visit your home.

It's getting in to the 70s during the day (southern NM); I guess you could say spring is here, but it's still too cold for me (and apparently the ants...they're not here yet). I'm waiting for the 80s, then spring is here.
