Library: A Boring Place for the New Generation

In school, I cannot help but notice how pathetic the new generation is today. When I pass by or visit our library, I can count less than 20 people studying inside! Has the modern technology have something to do with the deteriorating number of people who finds quality time reading books and scanning magazines in the library? Or is it really happening since time immemorial. It may prove true to many that library is a boring place but it does not to me. Books make me live in magic. Though, I'm not a bookworm.

Hey uniqeorn! Good for you that you still have good libraries in your place. I dreamed of having to visit libraries... Having a lot of books is a treasure. You travel and learn at the same time. I'm 21 but I'm still fond of it. We just don't have public libraries that I could visit with. It's just full of mysteries..

Sorry, I don't mean to sound rude, or anything like that, but how can you NOT have any libraries or bookstores at all where you live? I live in one of the worst cities in California, and we still have two libraries, one for the city and one for the university, and three or four bookstores. We are not the richest city in the world or anything like that, but we still afford to have libraries and bookstores.

The Philippines has less resources than USA. The poorest cities in USA may equal to an average city here in the Philippines. That's why whenever Americans come here, they can live a luxurious life even when if they stay in USA they are living as a middle-class citizen. That's how life goes here in the Philippines. There are even areas wherein you cannot find department stores, gasoline stations, schools and other necessary infrastructures inside a city.

Thanks For answering for me uniqueorn! I was thinking how I'd answer rogue about her question. We do have a library here in Cebu but you have to do a lot of things to do in order to enter it.

A lot of people go to our library around here. Grown ups and school kids go to the library a lot. I like to read books and so do my kids. We can also get movies at our library and take them home and watch them. We like to get books and take them home and read. I like ready about past history like about kings and queens and how they lived and what they liked.

You must be lucky for having a mindset who likes going to library so much. Our library has no movies to take out though. And your kids would surely grow smart because books can build minds and good minds can build great skills and so it will make a great man.

I have a library in my house full of books because I like to read. Our library even has tapes and books together to take home and listen to. They even have music CD's to take home and listen to. We can take things home for a while then return them and get more to take out. Reading is very good for people and kids. The history in books can educate people.

I agree. Although, I am guilty of finding resources more from internet than books. But I still manage to visit the library somehow. I envy you for having the drive to really read books. You must be a well-learned person. You have a wide and variety of knowledge.

I love the library, especially the library at my University, because I never know what I am going to find there. I have found so many great books in the library, books I often times wondered if they existed. I think that people should like library because any and all books that people need for research and for leisure reading are all there. Sure, you can look it up on the computer, but that is not all that fun. I remember what the library was like before computers, and we had to keep track of books on cards. It was not until 1996 or 1997, that schools and libraries around the U.S. began switching over to computers for keeping track of books in the library. Now, it is standard to have computers for keep track of books. Lately, I have been trying to build, create, and design my own library in my home. I like knowing that if I need a book, it is right there at my fingertips.

Oh I don't mean a big, huge, literal library, but something that is has a lot of books for me to read.

I have dreamed of having a library inside my house too. But it's way too much for me to do. I don't have enough resources. It may cost too much to renovate our house and put a library area. Also, the books to buy makes this dream remain an illusion for me as of now.

Good topic, I think you are right. Whenever I get the chance to go to the library, it ain't crowded like it used to. There are certain periods in which the library will be packed like when there are exam periods and stuff like that. Otherwise, I won't see lots of crowd at all..

Yes! Yes! Only when there are examinations will the library be filled with people. Instead using it as a place for reading, more often it is as a studying area for examinations.

Children are given computers, ipods, cell phones, etc. before they can barely walk. They are no longer taught what a wonderful place a library can be. It is a huge disservice we do to our children. My children, thank goodness, both grew up loving to read. We even read together in the evenings today.

Have you ever seen the movies where books were either considered a rare commodity or they were thought to be the minions of all evil? Today, we are facing real life where books full of our real history are being destroyed by the rewriting of history in new textbooks. Since our children no longer go to the library or think books are 'cool', they don't bother to check out our past to see how it interacts with our future. Computers are unreliable since most of the information seems to be what people's blogs and rants or incomplete data.

That's beautiful to hear from you mysticmaggie. I do hope that every mom like you would take time to give significance to books by letting their children read with her assistance.

Maybe, it will be a boring one for us because of the advent of technology like internet, laptop and others but then it is also better if we won't avoid reading in books. Books are more accurate and they will give us the feel of what it is about since it i directly from the author itself rather than a downloaded e book and just reading it by the monitor :)

You have a good point. Reading a book would always make you feel the accuracy of info than surfing merely the internet.

I live in a medium sized town, a little less than 100,000 people. We have three good sized libraries and they are always packed! I love any one of our libraries. The staff are amazing, helpful, and know what they are doing. All three branches are well stoked and have about 25 computers each. You can get books on tape, books, videos, music, magazines, newspapers. There is so much. There is always a different class going on, English as a second language, jewelry making, mystery solving. Countless book clubs and story time for kids. I am a big fan, can ya tell?

That's a good thing for you my dear friend. Having a library with good staff members is quite rare for me. We have libraries here in our school but they do not seem to update and offer new things. Though if they have, they are limited for use. The resources are also scarce. There are some moments when I cannot find the books I am meant to look and rent for.

I agree with you that it is pathetic how far of our younger generation visit libraries. My daughter, nearly 17 and I are regular visitors to the library. I borrow novels and my daughter borrows novels and DVDS. She is always putting books on hold to borrow. Many of the younger generation have not been brought up to read for enjoyment. Plus, they want to spend their spare time on nintendos, Wiis, etc.

Dear friend, I hope for new generations there are lots of other engagements and other time passing things. I hope those technology has given them the new way to attain knowledge especially internet and mobile. Still library has its own charm. Still while searching books in Library one may use search engines in internet.

I don't really go to the libray to study. I just go to pick up books and then leave. I am a huge bookworm so a trip to the library at least four times a month is necessary for me. I stock up on books everytime I go. There is a library around where I live and I see a couple of people in it. It's not a big libray but most of the people that do go, go to use the computers and there are a couple who go to study. But I've never seen that library packed with a lot of people. I think that technology is changing everything now. Especially since now you have e-books and the e-book readers which is just changing up the way that we now read books. I'm a huge bookworm but I really don't see myself using an e-book reader. I am just too old fashioned and I prefer to have a physical book in my hand. Although I can see a pro about the e-book reader. They save paper which in turn saves trees.

I too prefer traditional books than e-books. Traditional books make me feel appreciate the efforts and perseverance done by the author for its publication. I don't have the whole idea how the process goes for publication but I know for sure that it's not easy - it includes proofreading for many times. It's a hard task. Anyway, that's one reason also why i prefer traditional books.

I actually notice a lot of young people hanging out at the local public library whenever I visit it. Our library is broken down into different sections and there's always a bunch of people in the teen's section. They're either lounging on the couches reading, studying in groups or using their laptops at the designated areas. I even notice a few regulars there too. Whenever I go to the library (which is quite often) I always see this man with this iMac computer there. So, I would hardly consider my library to be a boring place.

Our library is very busy it is right near a school and a lot of kids come in to read, use the computer as well adults. That is sad only 20 people use your library I don't believe the library is a boring place. I love books and it saves you so much money checking out books instead of buying them at a book store. Too bad those people don't know what they are missing.

One of our libraries in school too are meant for children. Good thing for children early as 6 and 7, they are fascinated with the images of the fairy tale books. With this, they do not easily drop the book in exchange with computers which they are innocent of using.

the library in my college is and has always been jampacked full of people. I guess it is sad whenever a good library is not utilised as it should be. Though learning online has it's benefits, it's much more flexible for one thing, and one can study at home - and books can be downloaded nowadays so I guess it's not quite that bad. I'm more concerned about the lack of people reading nowadays (in comparison to last time). Personally I have an entire library of books in my netbook. It's really fun to read on the go.

That's the advantage of technology, you could always read on the go. However, it takes the population inside the library lesser and weaker.

Unfortunately yes I think technology is the usurper. But personally I have always enjoyed libraries as a comfortable, retrospective place to visit.

Sometimes even, when I visit the library. I find the regret of not reading a lot. How I wish I could read all the things inside this library. Then I sigh

Only last night there was a news article on our television about the demise of book shops and libraries. It's a sad fact that fewer and fewer young people actually read books these days, they would rather spend their time on the internet. To me books are my best friends and I would happily spend time in the local library.

The population of the people in the library is indeed getting fewer and fewer. This is an obvious result since the existence of computer and internet.

Hi, I agree with that...I too see a noticeable shift in reading habits. I remember when I was studying, our school library would be packed and we were alloted certain time to visit , so that everyone got a chance to do so.I used to wait eagerly to use the library and would feel sorry to leave after 2 hours that was alloted to us....I see many circulating libraries closing down these dayd s due to lack of customers...I too love books and feel that it is one of best hobbies ever..

Best hobby indeed! This is the only hobby that we could learn and widen the variety of our knowledge. Our comprehension becomes much better and readings boosts our morale too in facing tasks everyday.

Wanting to read and study is a state of mind. Technology doesn't really have a whole lot to do with it. If you are the type that doesn't like to read, weather or not you have the latest thing isn't going to matter. You will either enjoy it, or you won't. Personally I'm not one of those types that will want to pick up a book and read. I struggled with this issue all through school and it gave me more of I don't care I'm tired of fighting for every little thing" aditude. Sad, but very true.

We've got the same story here. Whenever I pick books from the library and open them, I cannot stand a patient time to read the details. I often end up looking for anything in the computer more engaging and more entertaining than books do.

It has been over 10 years since I've been inside a library. I remember the last time I went there was just to stalk some girl in college. Nowadays, whatever you need to research is available on the net so going to the library would be pointless.

Hello Uniqueorn! I love books also, Im always reading one. But I never go to the library and havent for a very long time. I get my books from my sister who gets them from a friend, who gets them from a friend.....see what I mean? Also, nowadays, you can find anything you're looking for as far as information goes, by googling it. So why go to the library? Most people now use their computers to find information. Maybe thats why library are less popular now.

Computers really have something to do with the decreasing population of students inside the library. We know for a fact that computers have more innovative way to let readers comprehend better than the book.
