Who Said The Germans Don't Have A Sense Of Humour?

If you click on the link below you will know what I mean. Personally, I think it's a great idea although it is dependant on whether or not you have 50 Euros (or equivalent) to spend in the first place. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8556915.stm?ls As with the Car Scrappage Scheme (that started in Germany) no doubt it will catch on over here in the UK...and beyond maybe? Who knows! Let me know what you think about it. Something needs to be done about the potholes, that's for sure but what? It's a big problem now, especially after all the frost we have had this winter....and we had loads of potholes before it started! Haha!

Hi Janey, that is brilliant! I bet the German who thought of it was as straight faced as a straight face can get. :) I was once told that Germans laugh at a joke three times. First time, it is because everybody laughs and they dont want to look conspicuously dumb. :) The second time, because they really understand the joke. :) And the tird time they laugh at themselves for laughing without understanding the joke the first time round. :) Well, as long as they exercise those muscles, who can complain. :) As to sense of humor, I am the one who doesn't understand some of the jokes. So may be I might just have some German genes there.

Haha! What do you think about the idea of sponsoring your own pothole though? Do you think it will catch on as it is a genuine story...it's on the BBC so it has to be lol.

Come on Janey, we are greate at plagiarizing. :) Lifting such brilliant ideas is simpler - there are no copyrights. he he.

I think we have enough people who would be willing for that sort of thing. We are good with graffiti on historical buildings. We might as well have a bunch of lovers doing that for each region. :) See how much the idea has inspired me. :)

Warum denn nicht? (Why not?) I guess if your tax dollars aren't enough to cover it, you have to get creative....

I've seen these "Sponsored By" Notices on sections of road while visiting in the US..is that a similar sort of an idea? You sponsor a road and have some input into it's maintenance and upkeep?

Must be, only you get to sponsor a smaller part of the road...

Really? Good for you my friend. People who know me will realise that I'm not having a go at Germans...it's just that they don't smile a lot but there again I think the Brits are getting that way 'cos we moan all the time lol.

Hello, Janey. Yes, German organisation at its best. They certainly do have a sense of humour. Several years ago we were on holiday in Spain, and there was an international band contest in the resort. The German band was staying in our hotel, and it was the same time that Germany beat Czechoslovakia in the European Championship. We remarked that they seemed to take it for granted they would win, whereas if it had been England, all the Brits would have been jumping up and down and shouting. With that, the band went to fetch their instruments and gave a rousing rendition of the Queen hit 'We Are the Champions.' Not to be outdone, the Brits started humming 'The Dambusters March,' and making like aeroplanes around the hotel terrace. The Germans started laughing, and some of them even joined in with us. The drink probably helped, but a good night was had by all.

Well there you go. Germans at their most humourous best. Love it. There's nothing like a party to loosen everyone up...and that includes the Brits!

I see,you buy the hole and then they fill it so it is gone. Then your name is there for about 5 minutes till it gets worn off. If it was April the first I would think it was a tease. I think maybe our road tax should pay for some guys to drive around with a tarmac lorry and jolly well fill in the holes. Of course long ago ,they used to get the convicts out there with hammers and piles of rocks and I guess they did a good job but that is probably looked at as unkind these days .

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately, it's down to local Councils to repair the potholes and not all of them have enough money in their budgets to cover all services...potholes were considered a low priority before the severe weather, therefore got neglected (it's either that or a few frontline services would go). This penny-pinching has now backfired on them due to the frost affecting the tarmac and lifting it so the problem is even worse and there isn't extra money to deal with it. Something needs to happen and soon because Driving Instructors now are told to ask their students to swerve around the potholes. Not good.

Interesting idea, I'd like to see if it actually works. My name etched in a pothole, hmmm, think I'll run down and buy one immediately. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, I like it too. I love that Mayor, he looks so happy doesn't he? Probably really chuffed with himself coming up with such a genius idea lol.

Never in a million years would I ever come up with a brilliant idea like that. Trouble is though, there are so many potholes here that it would take a lot of "sponsoring" to sort them all out. All the posh streets would get done and the rest would just have to "swivel" lol.

Who says the Germans do not have a sense of humour- I am hearing this for the first time ( except for the war-time Hitler & his Nazis) - I spent many years in Germany as a student then again on work for a couple of years and some of my & my family best friends rill today are German families as well- not only they are humorous but they are sincere as friends and are hard working too. I had even attended an outdoor fun filled event there where they called participants from the public ( it was heavily attended & crowded in that city event) for some fun- sports - it was televised - and the events were very funny- you needed a good humour filled brain to think of such fun!! And by the way, Janey, I will read that link of BBC later Bye

Actually, the two go together which is why I posted the video. Never mind, at least you like the Germans, which is great news!
