Tattoos have become wildly popular over the last few years…hardly anyone I know doesn’t have at least one. The ones I get a kick out of are the ones in foreign languages like Chinese or Japanese. A friends son went and got his name tattooed in Japanese letters right about his privates. When he got home he showed his mom (I was there visiting), she thought it was funny. I asked him if he spoke Japanese and he said no. So I asked him how did he know it was his name. He kind of looked surprised. His mom said maybe it said Dumb*ss in Japanese or Sh*tface. She drove him nuts trying to guess what it might really say LOL. I don’t know if he ever found out for sure if it was his name or not but it makes me wonder…why would anyone put something like a permanent tattoo on their body without being 100% sure that it read what it was supposed to. Would you ever get a tattoo of your name in a foreign language? Would you trust someone to just put it on without checking first? ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS**

First of all, I would never get a tattoo at all. Not worth the pain! And I don't think they look good when you get older and still have them. Second, to get one and not know for sure what it says is funny :) I bet there are tattoo artists out there who have gotten away with messing with other people's tattoos. However I would hope if you go to a reputable place that they wouldn't do anything wrong b/c they wouldn't want it to come back and ruin their reputation. But so many people will go to the cheapest guy to get a tattoo so in that case, I'd be worried.

I have several tattoos but I would never have any lettering in any language. A couple of years ago a friend of mine decided to have her name in Japanese tattooed on her shoulder, but let's just say something was definitely *lost in translation* LOL. She loves the tattoo and it does look very pretty but she was not so happy to find out that it wasn't completely accurate.

Hi Twoey I do have some tattoo's but never would I ever have my name or anyone else's name on my body, the ones I do have all have a meaning to me and are not just a pattern but as for names there are a few friends of mine who have but now regret it. So in all my answer is 'no' I wouldn't have mine or anyone elses name in whatever language tatooed on me....LoLo

I wouldn't. It might very well be my name phonetically and still be a swear word. My daughter likes those sites that show products from the orient with European wording and some of them are terrible innuendo but not meant to be anything particularly rude. Sweets and snacks mostly but even shop names sometimes or names on T shirts.

This reminds me of a television program that featured some wildly popular new tee shirts that were imported. They had Chinese (I think) characters on them, really large, center front. The kids all thought they were neat. It turns out that all that was on the shirt was the size, S, M, L, XL. At least this was not a permanent label but was on a shirt that could be taken off. I would not have anything tattooed on me. I would certainly get the meaning corroborated if it was a foreign language. Funny.

Tattoos HURT! - I am barely over my phobia of the doctor's needle. I do not do recreational needles of ANY sort. I am a certified wuss.
To answer your direct question...I'd at least consult a search engine about what that Asian character you plan to have permanently inked on your...person means. * And two, there are ZERO tattoos on my little person. I am barely over my phobia of the doctor's needle. I do not do recreational needles of ANY sort. I am a certified wuss.

I for sure wouldn't get one in some language I didn't speak (or at least take a speaker of the language along so I don't get a weird word instead) but honestly, I wouldn't get a tat anyway

I don't understand why anyone would get a tattoo in the first place, other than maybe eyebrows if they never grew back after chemo.

Eyebrow tattoos are very popular. They need to be redone every year though. My mom has them because she can't do a good job with a pencil. I just have mine colored every few months. It's cheaper. To be going gray at my ages sucks.

no.no way. check out the hanzi smatter website-the guy is a native speaker and he has a whole collection of misspelled and wrong meaning kanji. my favorite has to be the girl with "explosive diarrhea" tattooed on her. supposedly she knew what it said, but still.

I think if I was him I would not want to get to intimate with a Japanese girl, he might find out that he was had. Or get someone who could read Japanese to interpret it for him. Myself I would be too embarrassed to have someone put a tattoo that near my private parts, unless of course it was my girlfriend or wife.

Maybe it said "sucker"? My nephew has one that reads "Carpe Diem" both right side up and upside down. I'm not sure I'd get a tattoo, but if I ever did, I'd make darn sure that I knew what it said!

Yes! I think one should be 100% satisfy with his/her chosen tattoo design. Because tattoo should be considered a permanent mark. Removing it is very costly as well as painful. http://www.tattoos-beauty.com/koi-tattoos.html

I don't have any tattoo but I find them cute on others. If ever I get one for me, I make sure I know what it means. I don't want to look stupid and be laugh at by people (if it means silly, or pretty stupid) that understand what it means.

I imagine he would have a pretty good lawsuit open to him if they tattooed something other than his name, unless the judge threw him out of court for stupidity. If it said Dumb*ss, the tattoo artist would have a hard time convincing the court that was what their client asked for. Very few people whom I actually know have tattoos, although I do see strangers in stores and on the street with great big ones hanging out all over. No, I would not trust someone to put any kind of tattoo on me. I have put on temporary ones a time or two and did not like them after a short while and was glad when they came off.

i would but i would make sure that the tattoo would read what it should. lol! japanese and chinese characters are ok with me as well as arabic ones. however, for my tattoo, i'd like to have it written in 'alibata'. it is an old form of writing in my country. i've seen a number of similar tattoos in 'alibata'. i would have my name in 'alibata' but for the names of my loved ones, their name in english would suffice. no sense in puttign it in a foreign language and having to explain the tattoo to friends and strangers alike. lol!

No, I certainly would not. I have never gotten a tatoo although I have though a time or two of ones I would get. I am a person who does alot of research before taking a step like that so I would be sure of anything like a foreign phrase or anything. The language would be french and I would be sure first. Funny story.

LMAO! Oh how funny! What I think is a riot, are the celebrities that get into a religion that's the "cool one to be in", get a tattoo, then find out that the religion they are into don't allow tattoos haha. I myself have 2, but I did my research before picking these 2 out. The one on my left ankle means "Candy/Sugar" in chinese, Candy being my nickname, and another one on the back of my neck, that means fire in Arabic, which is my zodiac element, and describes my temper haha. The second one is special because I got that tattoo with my Mom, who got her VERY first tattoo, which was a butterfly, and she said her reason was so we have something between each other that is just us. The other 2 sisters didn't get any tattoos. My mom said the next trip we make there, she's going to get her belly ring lol. I think it will be a loooooong time before I get another tattoo...running out of places where I won't get wrinkles and stretchmarks.

I have no tattos. if I did I do not want on in a forgin langage. I think you sons friend should have made sure of what was said when he got the tat. I do agree that the tat could be saying someting ealse other than his name. I am sure he could find out in someway and them see form himself.
