How many times a day you sneak into your email boxes?

According to Joe Robinson, a business coach and trainer, email are making us less creative and we're e-mailing when we should be doing something else. We kind of check our mail boxes every half an hour or more often. Life seems to revolve around it making us dumb, less energetic and physically unhealthy! Even though, I believe in internet literacy and believe in the fundamental right to internet, I feel, we should make use of it judiciously. There should be a designated internet time for the kids and adults alike. What do you feel? How many times a day do you sneak into your email boxes?

well I agree it is essential these days for communication, but I sure know I don't fit on what you say as what its making us. I think you should speak for yourself. I practice discipline and control what I do.

I appreciate your thoughts there. Access to internet should be everyone's right and I just wish we do not misuse it.

Well my apologies to you. I think Joe Robinson should speak for himself as far as becoming less creative. The internet has become such a useful tool and look at us? Here we are trying to make some extra money, yet at another venue.

I do not know who JOe Robinson is and hope he understand the people he's dealing with here esp. here on mylot ! I keep my brain box on all the time and check every time I pass it and answer a needed if I have time. I have a home to care for an husband who is an invalid and there are times when all I have to do is be online and be quiet so as to let hubby sleep. I've had apportunities to not have a computer and I can't wait to get to one or get the power back on so I can use one. IN answer to your question I check my email many, many times a day. thanks

Sneak in? Now let's see.. Considering that on an average day, the laptop is in front of me atleast for 5-6 hours during work, and for a few more at home after that and the fact that email boxes are open most of the time during those durations, i would say i do more than sneak in... I'm getting more informed all right, but i guess that's making me dumber and lazier by the day. Saving grace or an excuse if you can call it that, is that the number of emails i send out or recieve are few.

Just because emails reach in seconds doesn't mean we have to acknowledge it instantly. Did I sound rude?! But, the fact remains, its time we must realise the importance of time and use it properly. So no reminders for mails on phones, no alerts and no automated tinklers.

Not rude at all, on the other hand you did bring about an important point in terms of expectations that the usage of email brings about especially in the corporate world. While working with a recent client, we used to a barrage of emails. Half the email would be followed up by a phone call within 15 minutes of it being sent. All the information that needed to be communicated both ways got done thru the phone, and the strange part after that, i would be asked to reply to the mail. That would realy make me wonder.

And Robinson's statement- We are emailing when we should be doing something else. Makes a lot of sense. I have a guy sitting in front of me, refreshing his mail box every 3 minutes. When he goes home in the evening, all copies of mail are diverted to his Blackberry. So he's probably emailing while eating, driving and is most likely be doing that in sleep.

Hello Mimpi! This is a tricky question . You see with the advent of internet and emails, we have become largely dependent on emails. Now a days, almost everyone whom you come across either at a personal level or official level will ask for either your mobile number or for email ID or for both. Asking about email ID is like - the person is asking for your address. And if someone says that s/he does not have an email ID, s/he is looked with frown eyes. You are very right or say Joe Robinson is very right that too much dependence on emails could be problematic and we should restrict it for kids and for us, as well. Coming back to your main question - Whenever I am on-line, I check my mails first (official and personal, as well) and if it is day time and 5-6 hours have passed, I keep thinking - how many mails would have come in my mail box (don't laugh please.........lol!). It is equally true that sitting on computers for longer hours is reducing our physical activities and making an adverse impact on our health. Have a great day! Deepak

I am laughing Deepak, I am laughing. I know for sure that you do that all the time and especially after the new gadget addition in your possession you check your mails on phone always. Having said this, I have always wondered about your impeccable time management. You never leave your friends in dark and at the same time your family is very proud of you and so is your office. So, that's deepak for us. we love you for that.

Mimpi! I requested you not to laugh.........lol! But you did opposite. Time management is something on which I keep working and try to indulge in multi-tasking. Time is at premium. I wish to do more than what I can do in 24 hours. Thanks a lot for your kind words. BTW, YOU have not mentioned about your own frequency? Dpk PS - please check your mail.

Not often enough I guess.LOL Im just not that connected to the internet 24/7. I dont avail of internet on my cellphone either so when Im offline, Im really offline. I would only get to go online at night or when Im just at home all day. A busy week would let me check email once a day for only a few minutes. But a free day or night that gives me the opportunity to be online hours on end, that would mean that I also check my email for hours on end.^_^ what I mean to say is that, my email account is the first thing that I open when I log in and it's also the last thing that I close before I shut down my computer. I have a permanent tab for it for easy access. Email is a part of the internet and I feel that if there's one thing that we need to regulate, it wouldnt be email use but our own internet hours. A time schedule for both kids and adults on internet usage could absolutely do wonders for a person's life. That's just what I think anyways.^_^

I used to check my email every now and then.. but nowadays, I just check it at least 2-3 times per day. I try to access it whenever I'm already free from everything, not being busy and if possible, when I have ample rest too. But whilst working sometimes I have the tendency to sneak and check out my email and that's the one that's a bit undisciplined for me.. need to control that for a bit.

So, i will always check my email box, whenever i switch on my computer.

I get that you are a responsible person. Emailing an important way to communicate these days, no denial and we have to have access to it as and when it requires. But just as our office hours we must try to streamline our internet activities. People who work 24x7 they are bound to have their box open 24x7 but I do not call it healthy in any respect.

Hi Mimpi, I never really liked writing by hand, I find it physically challenging and I do have a bad handwriting. And so when email was introduced you can say I was one of the happiest persons on earth. But I do agree with Joe Robinson, emails make us less creative, a little dumb, and somewhat lazy. After years and years of enjoying the benefits of communicating by email, I am slowly trying to go back to doing something with personal touch, like sending greeting cards (not e-cards), writing notes to my kids as a form a appreciation, and sending postcards to friends abroad. Now I still am into emails coz it is the most used form of communication in my workplace, so I do check mine as often as I can.

I never have to sneak into my email box because I'm at home alone with the kids during the day. That said, I believe that I check my email about once an hour during the course of a day. The reason that I check my email so frequently is because I don't like to let tons and tons of emails pile up on me. I would say that I get about an average of about three hundred emails during the course of an entire day.

Lately due to life, Health issues, working, Church, etc. my time online a lot of the time is quite limited. So rarely am I checking my Email like I used too. I usually check it maybe 3-4 times a week and see if there is anything important I might have missed and then move on to other things. But there was a time this was one of my most important things to be doing for sure.

Well, I am using outlook and I have programmed to automatically check my email from time to time. So when I turn on my computer, I also open my outlook. For as long as I do not turn off my computer, I will right away know if there is an email on my inbox. So this saves me the hassle of signing in from time to time to check for new emails.

I am guilty of time wasting too much as I come back to my computer many times during the day and check both of my regular email accounts. I usually try to go through most of the emails first thing in the morning and then again at night, but I usually end up back into them during the day as well. I did learn a few years a go that in order to be more productive with time that I should only be checking them twice daily and it is a good habit to get into. The exception to this rule is if you are waiting to hear back from somebody over something that may be urgent and you have no other way of contacting them.

I check my email box every time I see I have received emails. This habit depends on how important are emails for everyone in part. I keep my window open while working in the same time as my work depends on jobs received by email. It absolutely true that the internet and the computer in general transformed our life into a sedentary one, but we can alternate periods of staying at the computer with other activities such as walking, working in a garden or in the house, a hobby or sports.
