Mitochondrial studies have traced genetically all breeds of dog back maternally to 3 wolves! Wolves were the first animal domesticated by man and are the most diverse of all creatures. A Russian geneticist breed domesticated fox-dogs in 6 generations. Wolves secrete odour from their paws which pack member use to keep track of each other. Dog and wolf snouts do not develop till 2/3rds of the way through gestation. A puppy has sensory organ in its nose for detecting heat radiation. A dog can be trained to smell a body under concrete, bladder and skin cancer. Wolves need big brains than domestic dogs, for hunting and so their skulls need to grow for 8 months after birth. Half the diseases of dogs we share a dogs intestines develop outside the body during gestation as they are too big to fit inside! That when a mother dog eats the placenta hormones in it stimulate milk production. In a wolf pack, only the alpha female breeds but other b!tches produce milk and her young will suckle from them as well. Under stress a dog or wolf can reabsorb a developing pup. all the best urban

I did not know all this interesting information, but did know some of it. Did you know that many animals eat the placenta to help milk produciton. We have people here who breed dogs to wolves as pets, it works out ok most of the time but not always. I would not want one of these animals as a pet. I don't know if you have seen a wolf but they are a very large dangerous looking animal.

Thank you for all these fact, I knew that dogs descend from wolves but for the rest all of the facts were unknown, so today I have learnt something new, and since I have a dog I can now see him with different eyes...well kind of.

Fascinating! More than ever, I wish I had one, but allergies won't allow it.

I ever read if dog is domesticated wolf, even some GSD breeder add wolf in their GSD to mantain their GSD kuality. I even heard there is a breeder who breed wolf dog, they say it frendly but much more smarter.
