I read this news item in todays paper. A local politician who is waging a battle to criminalise cow slaughter made this pronouncement to highlight the importance of saving cows. Cows are revered animals in Hinduism.Scientifically does it have any base to prove that cows do give out oxygen which is so essential for survival of life on earth/

Are you sure that you didn't read this news in a humor section? Because this statement is absolutely wrong. Cows, like all the other animals, use oxygen for processes inside their body. They exhale carbon dioxide as a result of these processes. And cow poop is quite large source of methane gas.

Animal gains energy to function through cellular respiration, also known as 'oxidative metabolism'.It is the set of the metabolic reactions and processes that take place in organisms' cells to convert biochemical energy from nutrients into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and one of the by products from this reaction is CO2 ( carbon dioxide). A common oxidizing agent (electron acceptor) to be used in animal is molecular oxygen (O2), and cows is definitely in this group. Hope this solved the question and don't just take the politician words for it because he is not a scientist.

For the reference of a simpler diagramme, please go to http://www.dwm.ks.edu.tw/bio/activelearner/07/images/ch07c1.jpg Do pay attention to the numbers of O2 molecules needed to convert nutrients intake to energy in ATP form.

Thats only for trees to do my freind. The politician is playing with some Hindu sentiments I guess. Hmmm.. on a personal note I think Cows shouldn't be slaughtered in India. Since, it is against Hinduism, we must keep our culture and values intact. Thats our individuality. Bodhi

Well my friend, let you know that the physiology of a cow's respiration system is exactly the same as a human's or any other mammal. Although cattle breath may differ somewhat from human breath. Cows also produce an antidote to global warming in the form of dimethyl sulphide but little research has been done as to how this could be increased.
