Make your own salad, do you like that?

I like make-your-own salad buffets. I like to create something similar at home or to bring to a pot luck. I did that last night. I brought a big container of spring greens, plus different kinds of cheeses cut-up into containers (provalone and cheddar). Plus walnuts. I also brought olive oil, vinegar, a ceaser salad dressing, and a bottle of sunflower oil/hotpepper oil. Also some onions. That way people could put what they wanted on their salads. We had a lot of diabetics at the last pot luck, but some might not be able to have cheese or want onions. So I created a make-your-own salad, that way people could put what they want on the salad. The other foods at the buffet were: meatballs, vegetarian lentil soup, vegetarian black beans and rice, French Bread with butter, ice cream, cherry sauce, lime squares (like lemon sqaures, only lime). So what do you like for choices at a make-your-own salad? Have you ever brought such a salad anywhere? Hard to bring everything unless you have a container made just for that, isn't it? What do you bring to a pot luck? What do you like other people to bring to one. Thanks and take care.

Never done it, but I would also have tomatoes, maybe olives and a few more dressings probably Italian and blue cheese. I really don't much like spring greens, so I might instead bring a mostly romaine lettuce salad and a hot pepper oil would never cross my mind (or be in my pantry) so it wouldn't come.

Oh, kind of like corn in my house, only there because someone else buys it... I like blue cheese, but I try not to eat it too often because of the diet - I'm actually buying those salad spritzers, some are pretty good. I'll eat spring greens, but I don't much like them. The wax is a non-digestible, so I eat it because it just passes right thru - I do wash them first and get stuff off the wax, so to speak, I will peel it, I have a great peeler, fits in the hand. Ranch doesn't like me and I won't eat pepper - either hollow or black if I had my "durthers". I also won't've eaten the onions or walnuts, raw onions don't like me and I don't like true nuts.

Blue cheese wouldn't exist at my house unless my husband bought it. I have allergies to mold, so buying something with mold in it on purpose would not cross my mind. I can't have tomatoes and olives have way too much salt the way they're packed for me. If I had had time, I would have liked to have brought cucumbers, but they're coated with paraphen wax these days, so I'd have to peel them and then chop them. I have a friend at the pot luck that always wants at least one item spicy hot. Just chopping onions and cutting the cheese took enough time. We only had 6 people there and they seemed to be fine with the ceaser, olive oil and/or vingar as well as the hot pepper assortment. If we had had our usual pepper ranch, I would have brought that, but we were out of it. I had a ton of food left over and the only thing people wanted to bring home was the cheese. Romaine seems bitter to me. You and I would have a terrible time making a salad together, our tastes are opposite. I think you would have eaten the cheese only. It was interesting to see the combinations people came up with. One person didn't want any cheese, but the rest did. One didn't want any onions, but the rest did. Some didn't want the walnuts. Glad I did it with everything separate.

I love to make my own salad, because there are some things I don't like, for example cerlery in my salads. I think that is a wonderful idea, and onyl see that in some restruants that provide a salad bar. As for what I take, I have taken bean soup, potato salad and sometimes cookies. What I like to see other bring are the desserts because of my sweet tooth..lol

YES!!! since yesterday morning, but you probably didn't notice because I allowed my son to play on his site most of the day. So I am back and loving it.. What do I put into my bean soup? Well my stock is vegetarian or chicken, no pork for me. And I like navy beans the best, but will use other beans as well. And of course garlic and onions are a must. I really don't have a recipe, but just add in what I have. It's been a whie, maybe I will make some soon, it sounds good right now, since we had great weather over the last few days, today it is colder, brrr..

I have taken potato salad, too. People seem to like my potato salad. What do you put into your bean soup? Yeah, we used to have all deserts and some of us became pretty sick. 5 deserts is a bit much. So this is Sunday morning. Does this mean you're responding from your computer at home? Have we got our friend back without all kinds of library limits? WELCOME BACK!

I think taking a make-your-own salad is a good idea. I would have gone with a bunch of different veggies. I don't get to interesting with my salads. I like cheese, bacon bits, black olives, a little bit of cottage cheese, some sliced cucumbers, hard boiled eggs and maybe a little shredded carrots on mine. I don't usually go to potlucks, but for family get togethers I like to make calico beans or deviled eggs.javascript:__doPostBack('ctl00$cphMainContent$lbStart','')

I would have liked to have done more veggies if I had had the money and the time. I thought someone was going to bring deviled eggs, but they decided against it. What are calico beans?

Calico beans has ground beef, bacon, onion, dry mustard, sugar, brown sugar, vinegar, ketchup, pork and beans, baby lima beans, navy beans, and red beans in it. I do mine in the crock pot, but I know a lot of people use the oven to bake them.

I definitely love to make my own salad.. especially with added cheese, some delicious eggs mixed with pieces of chicken strips and some other healthy stuffs like tomatoes, cucumbers and whatnot.. delicious, and I think home-made salad is the best.

Yeah, I would have liked some cucumbers, too. But it was not to be. Eggs I might have done if we weren't going to have the food out for a long time and I thought someone else was going to make deviled eggs.

Hi, I have always envisioned myself starting a restaurant business here which serves salads. Customers can get to pick the ingredients they'd like and are priced by the size of the bowl/platter/plate that they choose. IT's like an eat-all-you can type but also more like, fill-your-plate-as-much-as-you-can LOL... BUt I don't know, salads aren't exactly the type of dish that people here go to often. Healthy eating aren't very much advocated here yet. MOst people still go for barbecue houses thinking that the more they stick to common food, the cooler they are. They think that adopting a vegetarian diet is only for status' sake. Oh, well, backward mentality.

I understand how you feel. I tried to start different busineeses, but various attitudes of the public up here have interfered with each one. Oh well, guess we're in the wrong place and time. Colonel Sanders had to try many times before he finally succeeded. So I guess we keep trying. Thanks and take care.

I think only a few really get lucky when it comes to business. And I tend to give up after a failure of the first attempt. I've ventured into little trial-and-error businesses before and so far all have been "error".

I love avacados and fancy lettuces that I grow in the garden. Not your regular iceburg but little fancy ones that keep comming back I just snip off some from time to time. I like apple vinegar and oils of different kinds. Try to get the flaxseed oil in there some how and grape seed as well. Good for ya!

flaxseed oil tastes not-so-great to me, I take it in a capsule. Grape seeds, I eat grapes seed and all. I did have olive and sunflower oil, so that's two kinds with the pepper oil in the sunflower makes for three kinds. I like walnut oil, but the price! The continuous growing lettuce is what my Mother used to always grow. I like the leaf growing better than the head growing lettuces, too. Lots more taste and variety in the taste.

Hello writersedge, Bringing a Make your own salad on a buffet is really cool. And the foods on the buffet tables are all great and it is making me hungry again. . I really like eating salads, but I prefer the make-your-own salad its because I can choose what veggies or ingredients that I will put on my salad. There are some ingredients that I would like but other people would not want and will not put on a mixed salad, so I would be missing this food. Same thing, if I hate something and I saw it on a salad, then I won't be able to taste the salad, so it's better to have a make your own salad. A salad to your own taste preferences. Thanks for sharing this!

Yummmmm..I would love to be a part of your potluck. I love a salad with a little of everything. My favorite dressing is ranch. My boss makes this awesome cheese dip whenever we do lunches. I actually ask her if she's bringing her special concoction when I find out we are potlucking it. It has sausage and hamburger in it. These little red things that I think are pimentos and all mixed with melted cheese in a crockpot..mmmm.

I too like to make my own salad and change it everyday. My family likes it so much. Have you tried different fruits for salad. You can try this. It is very tasty. You can choose different fruits like bananas, apple, orange, ripe mango, green grapes, pomegranate seeds, few canned cherries, guava, sugar (or to taste), lemon juice. You can prepare this like this way. Peel and cut all fruits into banana and apple in the end to avoid browns. Pour lemon juice immediately on fruits. In a little water add sugar and half melt it on heat. Mix melted sugar to the fruits. Refrigerate it and serve the fruit salad chilled. Salt and chaat masala can also be used.. Just try once. I am sure you gonna like it!!

I think your idea of a make-your-own salad is great for buffets and progressive dinners. It's a wonderful way to be creative and to allow for personal choice re preferences, tastes and flavors. Wish I'd thought of it. While salad bars are great restaurant items for the above reasons, I've read articles on the food safety and maintainance of restaurant salad bars, but I'm sure at home it's easier and safer to keep fresh and not "public" so to speak. I've brought several salads to pot lucks, including pasta salads, caesar salad, fruit salad. I've also brought banana breads and muffins, and entrees, such as spaghetti and meatballs, tuna casserole, and something called California Casserole, made with ground beef, noodles, and olives. I also like to do tea sandwiches, like tuna, egg salad, chicken and ham salad, and cream cheese on raisin bread. Some things are harder to transport than others, but it's always fun.

I like cream cheese on raisin bread, haven't had that in a long time. I'll have to make sure I have some again. We try to stay away from meat, unless like the meat balls, they're in a crock pot plugged into the wall. Sometimes I'll brings stuff with ice packs underneath, esp during the summer. Thanks for responding and take care.

What is your special salad called? The salad I brought was a greens salad, I had many salad greens like lettuce, spinach, etc. The cheese and other things make it sort of a tossed salad if I had put them altogether and mixed them. We have pasta salads here, potato salads, rice salads, all kinds of salads. I'm trying to help you in case English is your 2nd, 3rd, etc. language.

I love going to a buffet that has a salad bar. I always start out making a small salad, by the time I am done its a feast. Then I don't have any room for the other food. I enjoy the salad so much, thats the best part of going to a buffet. Thats a really good idea for taking to a potluck. I usually try to take something that can be put in a disposable pan that way Clean up is easy. I like making homemade potato salad or taking a dessert.

I couldn't find it, but I do have a container with many different areas, like a lazy-susan with different sections for different things, but I couldn't find it. That made things cumbersome. I like bringing potato salad, too. I also like bringing deserts. I've learned to just order the salad bar at most places now.

I like broccoli salad, rather than lettuce all the time. If I go to a buffet that has it I put broccoli, raisins, red onions, sunflower seeds all together, add bacon bits, and top with blue cheese dressing. I just take 'whatever' to a potluck, no specialty. I really enjoy just about everything at a potluck.

Hi, Edge! I often do this for potlucks. I like to use unusual greens, a variety of pickled or spiced veggies, fruits such as raisins or pineapple dices, and lots of crunchies, such as nuts or crisped dried veggies. The dressings are usually an assortment of oddities, too. I just can't seem to do the expected very well at all!

I also making my own salad. There are plenty of vegetables in my hometown because my grandparents grow them so we usually get them for free every weekend. My family is fond of salads be it fruits or garden salad we love it. Actually, I just made salad a few hours ago and I think make-it-yourself salad are healthier because they are made from fresh ingredients and you need not to worry about preservatives from other products you buy in the market.
