do you learn something from watching tv or it just makes us stupid and more boring? Some people are so addicted to watching tv, i mean im just not sure what good tv shows are still relevant and whih shows are just a waste of time.

I agree with getbiswa2000. Learning depends on the one who watches the television. I'm not a TV addict but I say I watch TV a lot. Even though some shows on TV would seem nonsense, we can try to pick up lessons on our own. When I was a kid, I remember watching Ultraman on channel 7. One episode involved an acidic monster. To defeat him, they had to use a basic substance. I learned about acids and bases there (I don't remember our science teacher teaching us that) and I actually encountered a similar question on our science exam. I watch the series House MD and I learn a lot about medical stuff. The series helps tease my mind to think because I am a nurse and I could somehow relate to what they are saying. Discovery Channel, National Geographic, The Knowledge Channel and The History channel are educational TV stations...although not all can watch it because not everyone has cable.

i love house because im a frustrated doctor. Lol. And yeah maybe we can learn on any TV show its just that sometimes we just want the shows to relax us after a long day's work and dont even mind what kind of show we're on.

Yes I learn a lot from "House", you learn about medicine but also about people's personalities. Where will you find a character like House. Of course my basic TV menu is National Geographic, History channel and any kind of educational program.

i love the different personalities portrayed in House especially the lead character. Well of course, we all know that they are just acting but then again they are able to show various kinds of emotions and we learn how we deal if we are confronted with those same situations.

I think that the television can be a very useful educational tool if used in the appropriate way! There are a lot of educational programmes on but I don't have much interest in these myself. I would class myself as a tv addict although I don't spend hours and hours in front of the television! I tend to go for the soaps in the evenings and obviously sky news and that's about it. Otherwise I am a keen cyclist! Andrew

yeah i believe so that it depends on the audience and purpose why an individual watches tv.

I like to think I've learned a lot from the shows I choose to watch. Most of the time I like to watch History Channel, discovery, Documentary, Animal Planet, and stuff like that. I do watch an occasional movie here and there, but mostly I like learning something along the way. I find I hardly ever get bored when it's something that actually makes you think, and not just watch and react.

Of course you learn something from watching tv. Even the most boring/silly/meaningless shows teach us something about life or how other people live. it can be a waste of time though if all you are doing is watching tv and not getting out there and living life.

Well personally when I watch television, I want to shut off the part of my brain that retains information. I just want to be entertained. Therefore, I watch things that entertain me on television. Granted, those things are getting few and far between these days, but when I watch television, it is purely for entertainment purposes. If I want to learn, I go to school. If I want to be entertained, I watch television. However, you can learn something from watching television if you so desire. I have unfortunately found myself learning something that I did not want to. For better or for worse, you can be educated by television. It is not all mind numbing entertainment, which is a shame. There is a certain amount of programs on television that can be learned from, if you want to. I don't want to but I can see where some people might.

you have a good point there. But with an addict like me, i want to give a meaningful purpose as to why i watch tv. Lol. I want to be entertained but i also want to learn something new everyday tht i don't know even before i started watching.
