NAIROBI, Kenya - Private security guards shot and killed a Somali pirate during an attack on a merchant ship off the coast of East Africa in what is believed to be the first such killing by armed contractors, the EU Naval Force spokesman said Wednesday http://www.foxnews.com/world/2010/03/24/private-guards-kill-somali-pirate-time/?loomia_ow=t0:s0:a4:g4:r2:c0.000000:b0:z5 What do you think of this? Do you think private contractors should take care of this? I figure if nobody else is, why not?

I do agree with you on this one! :) If I was the proprietor of the ship I would want to protect my property. The Somalia/Kenya area has been afflicted with sea pirates and several ships have been "kidnapped" and attacked by pirates. Its a pity that in the year 2010 piracy is still practised in a civilised world. I do think that the ship owners have the right to defend themselves and their crew. If I was a private contractor I would hire private security guards to scare off pirates.

The Letter of Marque and Reprisal was used with good effect during the 17th and 18th century. This is very similar to what bounty hunter do today. If you make the incentives great enough, people will do the job for you.

Pirates have historically been considered less than human and have no rights. Shoot the pirates and you will slow the problem. Target the money and you may solve the problem. There have been several reports that the pirates are getting the information from someone in Europe as to which ships to attack. The money is often deposited in bank accounts and then transferred around the world to hide it. Go after the money people and execute them and make them pay the ultimate price and maybe it will stop. Until then shoot to kill.
