Hi Mylotters, I've been thinking about getting a tatoo for 5 years now... Here's the problem: My name means "from the sea" or "queen of the seas" or anithing related to sea, so I want to get a Kanji symbol that means "sea" or "ocean" for my tatoo. I found one on the internet, but I'd like a native speaker to check it out for me, lol, see if it really means that. I don't want to get a fake tatoo! (and maybe realise ten years later that instead of "sea" it said "silly blond girl" lol) I'm uploading the one I found, if anyone could help me please tell me what it says!

I am not a native speaker of Japanese but I studied Japanese 2 years ago so I have studied Kanji too. And I think that the image you uploaded is right, it really pertains to sea or ocean.

Kanji for UMI? - I hope this one means "sea" as well as the very first one I uploaded!
Well, I'll show you a picture of my tatoo once I get it. I've also found a different symbol, meaning the same, but it is drawn with a different technique, so I have new doubts, lol. I'm uploading the new picture, personally I think it is nicer for a tatoo, but I have to check again the meaning!! Anyway, I marked you best response because you were by far the most useful response, and plus you answered really quickly, so thank you so much one more time!

well personally i really dont fancy tattoos and dont see myself laying down my body for any kind of image to be put on my body but in as much as i dont like it i cant say do it or not but in case you finally do it make sure that you dont offer your body up in tattoo for a secret identification that even you might not be aware of until its too late ,

Hi byola2871, well, besides the fact that I do like tatoos and you don't, I quite agree with you that I can't put just anything on my body, it has to have a special meaning for me and be a nice design too, because it'll stay on my skin for a very long time. That's why I wanted to make sure I got the right symbol before getting my tatoo. Thank you for your response!

This Chinese character means, "sea". - This is another picture of "sea" that I have found for you to enjoy.
Hello marinarovi. The kanji you uploaded is exactly the same with Chinese character, meaning "sea". I have also found one such word for you. I am a native speaker of Chinese. So there is no problem for me to tell you that you have found the right word for "sea". In Chinese, we pronounce the character, "hai", the third tune. I wish you could pronounce it well by yourself. Have fun, friend.

You are right that it is calligraphy different with exactly the same word. In English it is pronounced /hai/, like we greet each other with a "Hi, marinarovi".

Hi williamjisir, thank you so much for your response. I couldn't get my tatoo yet but I will soon. How do you pronounce "hai" by the way? any similar sounds in english? I see the picture you uploaded is a different character than the one I uploaded. Is it just calligraphy different but they mean the same? You were really helpful!
