Would you live by the Code?

I had the chance to relax with my daughters and we reviewed The Last Samurai. My daughters asked me afterward if I would live by the Samurai code - Bushido. I hastily answered Probably not. Bushido is the way of the sword. But I could abide by the conduct and life of a Samurai. Samurai literally means to serve. That is noble, I believe. Anyone here who could adhere to the Japanese Bushido?

I could live with the chivalry that this code promotes, the honor and glory. I could not live with the swordsmanship aspect of it. He who lives by the sword shall die by the sword.

I think the code goes God, country, and family - in that order. If you do that, I tilt my cap on you.

Okay, I am almost tilting. God comes first and it is not negotiable. You can have family next. The country, oh please, let's work together on this.

Hi Hatley, I am afraid of the sword, too. I am glad to know that you had served humanity. That is also the code I live by - loving our fellowman. Very difficult though. But one day, when I am not so busy with my children, I'd like to put up an orphanage where I can take care of the deprived orphans.

Hi ms. we're together for the Holy Week. After that, back to summer school and practicum. I am also not for the sword, nor any weapon. But I marvel at Achilles and Hector, the gladiators, and revered clashes in history. I think the call of duty matters when the sword is invoked. When one has to defend God and land, and even family, the sword comes in handy. Ooops!

I guess if I've lived way back in medieval times, then I think I would liked to have lived both by chivalry and the military aspect of it..There's nothing to be ashamed of if you live by chivalry at the fullest since if denotes honor and dignity, and is revered by the church at the time as one of the most honourful and righteous way to spread, defend, and promulgate christianity especially in the early years of medieval catholicism since the advent of the dark ages..where it not for them, the crusaders, knights, and other many physical defenders of christianity, who knows what religion we may have today, or if we are still enjoying this currently achieved remarkable technological age..

Chivalry becomes you. I like that. We need more male today who could take care of the ladies. The times of the knights in shining armors rescuing damsels in distress should be relived. I'd like to see those muscles flexing for more meaningful acts than displaying them in the runway.

I could live by the code. I think the world we live in today could learn a little from this story. People today are much to selfish, and rarely put others happiness in front of their own. Through serving others and standing up for what is right shall bring one great personal honor...yes, I think I would live by the code...

Thanks, waterdog, for responding to this discussion. The Bushido is a way of life. You are right, people are much too selfish now, and we need that selflessness to achieve great personal honor. I am just still apprehensive by the way of the sword... although of course, I understand what it stands for...
