What keeps you going?

You know the famous adage - when the going gets tough, the tough get going, right? It is true that when times are challenging, it is the resilient spirit in people that will rise to the occasion and keep them going. But, my question is this: What keeps people going on an every day basis? When days are mundane and perhaps dull? When work is just work? When the days run into one another like clockwork and nothing new or interesting is happening? What keeps you going then? And what about me? I should be sitting back and enjoying reaping the fruits of my labor. My kids are grown up except for my two young adopted daughters who still need my love and care. There's hardly any housework to keep me occupied at home. So what keeps a LOL (lady Of Leisure) like me going? I will be frank. For me, it's the family business that dad has entrusted me to run before he passed away 3 years ago. It isn't that big business but it keeps my sanity intact with the lively interaction of customers that patronize the establishment and managing the fruit farm is what keeps me going.

So i guess we are both lady's of leisure not that i wanted to be or had a choice since my bad health made me have to quit work. I feel as if i'd still work some if i was able. I work around the house & do all my cleaning etc. I think determination pays a whole lot in my life. I don't want to have to depend on anyone & hated it when i thought i did. I'm glad u have the buisness to keep u going. I miss being around people like i was when i was working. I have gotten use to it now for it will be 5 years in june since i had the stroke. I handled it alot better than i thought i would to be honest.Have a good one, Zandi.

I am glad that I have something to do even though the business is not that lucrative but it does keep me going rather than be left redundant doing nothing because of age. That will invite a lot of illnesses to an aging body if we remain lady of leisure sitting all day in emptiness. We got to keep going till our frail body can take no more.

hi antiquelady I have a younger friend here at Gold Crest that is one of my dining table mates, she had a stroke but my goodness she has worked so hard and has come b ack , she can do more with lifting her arms and legs than I can, and I never had a stroke. she had made a real comeback and makes me think of the physical therapist I had when I broke my left shoulder. the break was horribly bad as the shoulder bones were too crushed to reset, so had to have surgery and a shoulder joint replacement. So I had to learn how to to use my left arm again and how to walk with a cane. Whenever I would falter and say I could not walk one step further, this canny therapist would say, mrs. Hatley you can always do more than you think you can.So I would wobble another ten minutes of walking and finally could walk all over the halls, and I had not thought I could do it, but I could. so now whenever I think oh I cannot do any more, I hear you can always do more than you think you can. and its true you really can.

Good for u Hatley & good for your friend there to. I told a friend of mine on here who has had shoulder surgery that we were 'TUFF' ol' birds but i don't know u well enough to say that to u, lol. I was lucky that the sroke i had was not as bad as it could have been. If i didn't have other health problems that bother me more than the stroke did. Shame we have to have health problems in our 'golden years', ha! I use to have a little lady that i did her hair every week & every week she would say jo, getting old is the pits. I found out she was right.. Things could be alot worse than they are & for that i'm thankful i'm good as i am. Have a good night. hugs.

hi zandi458 know what some of the thing that keeps me going is mylot itself, it fills avoid of having lots of time and not much'money and living in a boring retirement center. Yes days here are mundane indeed.but when I start responding to discussions new vistas open up for me and I am feeling really content. I am indeed here in Gold crest a lady, old but a lady of leisure as my room is cleaned for me, bed is made, linens changed ,floor is vacuumed, am fed three times a day, nurse gives us our medications, whats to do for ones self. am not really used to this as I can do for my self. being elderly does not mean being senile or looney tunes or stupid at all, it just means you have lived a long time.like you with y our business my my lotting keep my sanity too ,.Also survivors have learned how to keep going, and we bounce back, we are like weebles, we wobble but we do not fall down.

You do qualify as a LOL too. When your only concern is being in the center which gives others the opportunity to have employment catering to the needs of the residents of the centers. Reading from your discussions, I never think that you are an elderly person as you can mingle well with the young and old alike with your great discussions that far outweigh the younger minds.

I am always trying to learn something new. For the past several years I have been studing energy healing, now I have started water color painting. I watch the discovery channel and the science channel, there is always something new to me to learn from them. And I read all the time, several books at a time. All this plus the day to day stuff keeps me interested.

I am excited that I am getting back to some reading as well as some creative things. Having something to do keeps us going. It would be an empty and dull world, otherwise.

Life has no end to learning. Everyday we learn something new which I believe keeps us mentally and physically active. Without which we will age and become senile faster. So learning and acquiring new knowledge makes life more worth living.

I must be super tough cuz I keep going like the ever ready bunny ! Seriously, what keeps me going now at 61 and no kids at home and a sick hubby is just the fact there is more somewhere and I sit and wait for it to come to me which is what all others do is sit and wait--- I've grown tired of the sitting and waiting and have now found that leaving the ailing hubby is ok and am now dividing my time between my son, my 3 gransons and my husband and animals. I am worn out after ball games with the kids and coming home to do the mundane things I think I have to do but in the long run I am happier to be on the move and wondering if I'll ever get done. You should be super proud you have a business to run. At least it's an income as well as social outlet. We are basiclly alike , but different ! Difference is what keeps life interesting.

Hi quita, it must be a real tough life for you to be the guardian angel of a sick hubby. Life can be very boring when we have an important obligation to shoulder daily. But I believe the vows that you have signed years ago 'in good times and in bad times' is what keeps you strong to face the the challenges in life. Yes, I am a little fortunate to inherit an established business but it keeps me grounded and imprisoned in a routine life. It can be a bit boring sometimes.

I am getting bored quita of leading this monotonous life what with a drinker husband who always comes home intoxicated and talking rubbish all the time. But I am happy finally I can go off and take a long holiday in Australia this May. It will be a 3 months holiday down under and hopefully I can think of what to do next when I come back.

I am happy you can take off like this. I really am but also worried that your marriage will fail. Three months is a long time to be gone. I do understand the monotony cuz I have it too. My husband has lou gehrig's disease and is down in bed most of the time. He's mobile to some extent and can get up and go when it suits him----it's his breathing now that worries me and he can't walk but a few feet without having to have an inhaler or oxygen. It's hard for me to sit here day after drear day even tho he bought me this very nice computer to sit and wait------ So,my first husband was a drunk and a wife beater and you should go even tho it might end your marriage. I cannot see where you have much of a marriage the more I sit here and remember mine so long ago. YOU, get gone and have a great time. What happens next ??? Who knows? and who the devil cares? You are going to find that life is so different that coming home is going to be hard on you. I promise there is life after a drinking man. God blesss, quita 88

my dreams keep me going. i believe once it's achieved, people will be inspired by me. very idealistic, lol :). but to stay sane, i watch feel-good movies. i cannot compare my everyday life last year and for this year since i am facing a different situation right now. overall, it's the family that keeps me going. knowing for a fact that they support me in every step of the way, tiresome would be the last on my list. :)

Actually people can't live without trouble. Like other animal human are also borne live and die. But the difference with other living being is people like problems. So people create problems and try to solve it. Like the game people plays with the life. Every challenge gives people strength and pleasure to live. We the human can't pass the time without problems. So thought it is little contradictory but it is right that all the problems we face in life is created by human itself. Like the world puzzle. And in the process of solution of the puzzle of life we want to show our excellency. We got bored with simple common day to day life we want something new in the life. Life is a search of new thing something uncommon. So don't like a common routine in whole the life. But other creature follows a day to day common routine for whole the life. So they have no problems to solve. It is common human nature that we fade up with normal life. We want adventure. We want thrill. So it is really boring for any person to pass the time with similar common activities. But I think as you are involved with mylot so your life never goes boring. It is a very interesting site. I think you can get an exciting and interesting daily life involving yourself with mylot.

Motivating Factor - There is no down time here. Always on the go.
I love your inspiration. The family business. Sounds interesting and like something I am working on this year.. The Gardening, to pas along to happy customers this summer time. What keeps me going during the mundane, when days turn into weeks and weeks to months is first and foremost, my puppy. Secondly, it is to take occasional time out to pamper myself. Be it with a batch of my favorite cookies or a nice long warm bubble bath. I find pampering myself does give me a boost of needed energy at times. Taking care of plants is always therapeutic for me so is something that is worked into my daily routine. I am also into crafts, painting and sewing so unfinished projects is another way for me to break any monotony.

I was talking to my therapist the other day and she asked me for my ‘joys’ are. I didn’t fully understand at first until she explained that ‘joys’ are the little every day things that make your heart sing and if you don’t know what they are, you should find out and include in your daily life. For me it was easy, my writing and my animals are my ‘joys’ and they are definitely included in my days! I do feel content most of the time, if only I could eliminate cooking, cleaning and washing from my days my life would be perfect!(LOL) As far as the tough times, it is my daughter who keeps me going because she loves and needs me so much and no matter how difficult things may get, I look at her and she motivates me not to ever give up!

You should thank god because your dad has directed you with some business. There are lots of people in this world who don't have any money to take from family to start a business or make a living. I believe that it is the hope that makes each person in this worlk keeps going. If there is no hope, there is no point in living. A business person will think, the next day, or the next month he will make more profit. A student will the next semester he will get better marks and find a good job. It is the hope or faith in a person takes him to the next day of life.

Yes, am very grateful for the opportunity that was given to me but in actual fact it is not my choice of business and the locality is far from my own house. But because of the faith that my father has entrusted me to run, I have to accept it anywhere.

Well, I think if you didn't like the thing you are doing very much it would be better for you to seek the very thing that you are interested. Then you will surely feel movtivated and energetic. It may depends on what you value most.

Hi Zandi, Good day to you! What keeps me going everyday is my husband and 5 month old kid, family and also my very close friends at work. Sometimes life seems so tough especially if there are problems at work or within the family. Sometimes the pressure at work gets into me but when I get home I forget all the pressure and hardork and that I'm tired once I carry my baby in my arms and he smiles at me. At work my friends are always there to listen to me and inspire me to get going even if there are a lot of pressure. My life is so busy and sometimes I even feel like I no longer have time to rest and relax.

Yse Zandi, you're right! I should be thankful for that. I actually have another baby on the way. I'm pregnant again. :) Sometimes we encounter problems and trials but instead of dwelling on that it's better to focus on the best and nice things we have, appreciate life and be positive. Having a positive outlook in life also helps me get going. :) Have a nice day always!

purpose, zandi, is what keeps people going. without purpose, there is simply no going. but, you know, purpose takes many forms and comes with different challenges. the ability to cope and contend makes one going, not just overcoming, but more on succeeding. also, purpose keeps the mind busy and at work. those without purpose are the ones that give up easy on life...

I am very much an optimist and I get through bad times by thinking it could always be worse, every dark cloud has a silver lining. My most helpful thought comes when I remind myself to talk it over with God. Putting my complete trust in God and His strength to see me through this time. With His help, I can face anything but I don’t try to handle life on my own as He has always in my long life given me a sign how to handle any problem..

I have goals and I have so many dreams .so far my one dream to have my own small business just happen and after dreaming that fulfilled dreams I dream again to scatter an establishment of my small business. To have branches and to make my money works for me. What keeps me going are the learnings and experiences too, because those things makes my life worth while. My family is trusting me with all their might about that business so I have to keep on going and be successful because I don’t want to fail them. Sometimes my life is tiring when I am so busy. I just want to be at home and sleep, but when I think that I am so thankful of having achieve my dream which is my business, I stand up and work again.

It's knowing that my daily mundane actions keep my husband alive and a roof over my daughter's head. I have the care of two disabled people in these 62-year old hands. I can't afford to get to bored with my life. The minute I do something happens to one of them. Like getting my daughter's physical today. The doctor and I decided since we have moved to a farm and there is more opportunity for her to get injuries, that a tetanus shot would be a good idea. That worked just fine for about five seconds after the shot and she started to break out in hives and swell. She's allergic to the tetanus shot. No other doctor had told me that! So much for a boring day! I also have some delightful new friends who peek in occasionally and break up the boredom. One took me to lunch while my son stayed with his dad and sister. Another will be taking me to play bingo - my first time in years - tonight.
