Texting and Driving

United States

Just a few months ago, my state has made it a mandatory law to ban texting while driving. While I love technology, I am for this new law. It's hard enough to drive and operate a vehicle defensively without adding the risk factor of trying to text at the same time. It's hard enough for me to try and answer my cell without checking who the call is from and I am sure some people agree. I just want to know if you agree or not.

Testing messages and driving your vehicle is quite risky. I just used to put my phones on silent mode during my drive. So that I don’t get any tones or alerts to receive the call or to view a message. This makes my driving quite safe.

Good idea that more people could learn from. Maybe a suggestion that more states could incorporate into law.

Hi ShelleD! Texting and driving is not supposed to be practiced. It can cause a lot of troubles and accidents. I for instance, do not text and drive. It's not only those who text while driving that annoy me. Even pedestrians who take time crossing just because they are texting.

Hey dolce_vita78, Yes you are right. We must not allow anyone to use the phones or other things during the drive. There are many people has lost their life due to the careless and irresponsible driving from others, who use the mobile phones or other items during the drive. Really a simple mistake on the road can be a reason for the loss of a life from this earth. So jut makes use of the cell phones or other things gadgets when you free from your ride.

Its illegal to text or talk on your cell here as well...unless the call is made from a hands free headset or device. Its not safe to text while driving..you arent paying attention to the road then.

here in my country, using a cellphone while driving is also prohibitted but still, i can see a lot of people getting away with it. i specially hate drivers of public vehicles who commits this crime.. they dont even think about the many lives they have on their vehicle..they dont care about their safety at all..they should know for a fact that they are held responsible for each and everyone of those people who are inside their car.. s c rew them.. they're very insensitive, careless and.. hopeless I guess..

I think it is a pity we should have to make laws to people not to do something as stupid, and dangerous as texting, and trying to drive. Sometimes I think we have lost all common sense in our society.

I hope they push the law here in Florida too. Last I heard they are still working on it. If they do it'll actually be a good thing. I will admit there are a lot of possible distractions behind the wheel, but texting is the only one where a person is forced to divert their attention from the rest of the world. This is where the accident occours. not so much taking the hand off the wheel. SInce people text one-handed.

Personally I think people need to quit Texting while driving and pay more attention to the road instead. Personally how do you explain to someones family that you killed someone just because you just had to send one more text, and how many people are killed everyday just because of this? I would think it would really matter to more people to continue to change this, and instead pull over somewhere if they really need to text someone instead.

It's been passed in my state as well. I think it's a common sense thing, I mean how can you keep your eyes on a phone and drive at the same time. I actually caught a woman texting, and when she noticed I was watching, she put her phone down. I don't like using my phone while driving. So I either wait or have my kids answer it for me. I also have a bluetooth that works wonders. I can't wait for a no cell phone while driving law is passed. It's bad when you see cops with one glued to their ears and speeding at the same time.

Here in the UK it is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving yet people still drive and text with no regard for other road users. I have seen so many near misses and close calls on the road, with drivers being distracted by their phones.

I do tend to think that texting while driving is something that should be illegal throughout the world. That said, our state recently passed a law that banned texting while driving. However, the problem that I have with our new law is that it only fines people $25 for being caught texting while driving. That said, it doesn't matter to me what the fine is because of the fact that I would never text while driving, but there are a lot of other people that it won't stop.

Yea! I hate it when people text/talk on cell phones while driving and it pisses me off! These people are ALWAYS the ones who drive slow and in the left lane so they'll block everyone else who wants to drive fast. It only takes one car per lane to make traffic and they are the ones who do it all the time.

a second you take your eyes off the road to check on who's making a call, while driving, send a driver to kingdom come. when driving, drive. when you have to answer a call or a text message, it is better to take on the service road, park and do your text messaging or answering calls, even making ones. it is always better to stay on the safe side than saying sorry later.

I feel we need more control, or rather common sense in driving situations. There are too many distractions already, before we add in all the new gadgets.

That is a good and nice initiative rule and i hope the people follow it quite strictly and regular way.Its of course so tough to ride ,but people always think driving as a careless thing and they want to multitask in this times and hence leading to unwanted and uncalled for things happening to them.So strict laws are the best way going ahead for this kind of events from happening

dear shelleD, in driving one needs full concentration hence i agree that texting while driving should be banned. but how can police and other arresting officers arrest them while doing. there should be a way to do this before the driver and the car meets an accident. i very much agree with you. have a nice day. and welcome to mylot. hope you are enjoying it here. ann

This habit has been banned more many years here, along with talking on the phone while driving. This does not stop people from doing it though. You always see people driving along with their phone held up to their face. Even around busy areas like the pick up area at our kids school. You have to be very alert there at those times, but I often see people talking on the phone while navigating their way through the traffic and kids!

I absolutely agree with that rule...I have a sister who often driving while still texting her friends...It was pretty scary but up until now she's just doing well...But even with that..I'm still against it...if you want to text someone then you should stop driving, drive your car to the side and then do the texting.

I support this law whole-heartedly. In fact, in my country, even talking on the phone, with one hand holding the phone while driving is against the law. I always believe that driving requires one to be 100% attentive on the road, no matter how experienced a driver he may be. This law will definitely help to cut down on the number of careless road accidents that happen every now and then.

Well thats really important that you should avoid using mobiles at driving. Most of the accidents are really of the interest we show on mobile talks and messages rather than the drive!

I agree that texting or calling while driving should be prohibited. In the news there were various accidents due to cellphone usage. Better not to drive if you like to use your cellphone. Or park your car on the side where it is safe to park then use your cellphone.
