dear mylotters, this friend has been a schoolmate in my elementary years. she finished high school and was married early, had children and became a widow. now all her children have moved out of her house because they all got married already. she only have a maid helper with her as her companion in the house. she is thinking of going back to school.. get a college degree. she is confused on her choice of what to do. she thinks it is very late now to think about college because of her age. but if she start a business, she might not be able to manage a small business well because she only finished that much schooling. what do you think? is it wise to go back to school at her age? ann

Hi Ann. Hows ur health now? Hope its much better. Learning has no age. U know in India u may not be able to go to school at the age of 54. But in USA and all the foreign countries its very much possible. So for ur friend i dont see any problem to continue her education. Wish her all the best for the venture and yes all the best to u too for all thsat u r doing and wish to do. :)

In India education has age brackets. Ya maybe a year more or less is fine, but not much. If u r trying to learn subjects through a private tutor only, then age has no limit, but that too may not be socailly accepted, as people would consider that as a show off. Very unfortunate. But people here hardly realise the value of education. They feel education is age concentric. Even if a student completes a certain degree at a higher age he is looked down upon and not given value.

One of my cousins is about 50 years old and he has decided that he want to go back to school. He wants to become a teacher, but before he can start, and has to graduate high school. He goes to a special high school where the students are aduls and he is determined to finish highschool, so that he can become a teacher. He hasn't been easy for him to study after so many years, but he wants to follow his dream. I think that is great, and in my opinion he isn't too old to study. Your friend is about the same age, and I don't think it is old late for her either. It might be hard to study again after som many years, but on the other hand people who are older than the average student also have some advantages, because they have more experience than a young student.

He didn't get that far yet. He will finish high school this year and next year he will start his education as a teacher. In my country it takes 4 years to become a teacher, so he will be in his mid-50's when he finish the education

She is very eligible to go back to schooling, but with the help with one of her children or grandchildren to tend to safeguard her house, because even if the helper has the good reputation from her employer, she has all the time by herself in the house. There is a saying,"when the cat is away the mouse will play".I can be wrong, but my concsience told me to have one of her relatives be at home with her,so she can have no more to think about anything, but only her studies, that is if she wants to go back to school.I think I have the right idea,is'nt it?

dear berting, she has a maid helper with her in her house, who she also sends to what we call "sunday school" because she is working. i guess, my friend's decision to go back to school would be an inspiration to this maid helper to have an ambition and to further pursue her education and succeed in life. she always have relatives visiting her in her house and they surely will help her watch the house while she is away in school. thank you for this response. ann

54 is way too old to go back to school. It would be very awkward to be in school at that age and it seems like you probably wont be in the marketable workforce for long enough to make paying for that schooling worth it. It seems kind of like a waste to me.

dear mrniceguy, that maybe, in some ways true. but i would still say that she go for it because education can never be bought. it could be achieved through experience but still formal education would mean a great deal in these modern times. and there are courses that she can take without need of going to a university if you are concerned about her feeling awkward in one. i thank you so much for your response and for stating what you truly feel. have a nice day. ann

MrNiceGuy, I've been feeling the same way about going back to college; people talk about the very old people who finish just for the challenge of it. If you can afford it, do what you want with your time. BUT I've also been hearing stories of older/old people who still have years to work and need to increase their income - like me. At 48, I still have a teenager at home, I've been a stay-at-home grandma for this past year and really have nothing to recommend me to a hiring manager. If I come in with a degree (having 'some college' is the only thing that's saved me so far), I have at least a bit more bargaining power. Earning only $7-$10 per hour isn't enough income to be accepted to even rent an apartment! Add to that needing to feed a teenage boy?

Hello tigeraunt. Allow me to put a few cents worth of opinion to this discussion. Age is not a deterrent to education. Life is a never-ending process of learning. Even at a late age of 54 your friend may still have plans in life to keep her occupied like going into business. And to prepare herself she may need the knowhow by going to college and finishing a degree. Remember the secret of success is determination, interest, perseverance and, most important, knowledge.

education is continouos education., age doesn't matter here, even you reach an old age you could still go to school or hire a private tutor for you to learn and cope up with the life of an educated person..I'm happy to see someone studying and willing to learn more.

Thing is times are changing. You got new technology, new way of doing things and you must learn or relearn. My dad is over 50 years of age and still goes to classes and takes tests because he needs to know all the new things or someone who does know it could come and take his job. Its very important to keep learning so we aren't behind on anything.

Very good, important point! It may not be necessary to actually attend college -- learning can happen anywhere -- but it feels more serious and official. Besides, it may be fun! My oldest son is 27, my youngest is 15; the oldest is having to go back to catch up with things my youngest is learning as part of a normal school day. Imagine what it's like for us older ones if we haven't been doing so regularly!

Hello there ann ! I think age doesn't matter if you continue education. As long as you have the will and guts to continue there's nothing wrong with it. For me its a very good idea still even if he has that age he values much his education in his life. This is the vital things in our life to have schooling for us to become more equipped and fully loaded with knowledge and power of intelligence to face the reality of high technologies generations. More over I appreciated his seriousity and and genuineness of having eduaction as important part of his life as he feels to contnue for he did not able to cope up w/ for the sake first of his kids.He would be nice to be given a plaque of appreciation as even in his age he has the love to educate himself. He is the best model of all men who don't love go schooling evn if they are still young at age. The best mirror to be seen to each everyone that learning is a continuing process and has no limits of ages as long as eager to learn more its alright. Intelligence and humbleness can lead us to a harmonious life as we faces the truth in daily living on earth.

My mother is now 53 years old and she was married young, I was born when she was 23 years old and she was a stay at home mother with myself and my siblings until I was a teenager, she only re-entered the workforce because my father passed away. That said, she is now considering going to college for the first time and I think that it is a wise decision. She may not have a really long career ahead of her, but I think that it would be good for her to have the opportunity in her life again to work.

I don't think it is ever too late to go back to school. If one is passionate about learning and really want to go back, one should go back. Otherwise you spend the rest of life wondering why you didnt go back and feel bad about not chasing some dreams.

I don't think age matters when a person is considering going back to school. Getting an education is like an investment in yourself. We should always be doing things we things make us better people. As long as your former schoolmate can afford the money and time to go back to school, I think she should. It's tough that she's a widow now and feels she has to go back to school to further her career, but now is the best time to start enjoying the rest of your life! I admire her for setting such a wonderful goal.

I feel it is never too late to learn, or go to college. My mom went to school at the age of 58 and got a degree in nursing. She worked until she was 74 and retired. She got married at 74 and is loving not working again. she was a fulltime stay at home mom when we were all at home. my parents got devorced after we were all grown. My mom worked cleaning other peoples houses until she went to school. So, I vote YES!! your friend should go to school and live her dream!

education isn't confined with age.age doesn't matter when you are determined to learn.the ability to learn doesn't degrade while we age.I salute your friend for her courage to go back to school.if she is worried about her business, she can very much handle both as long as she knows how to manage her time.

I believe it is never late to decide to go back to school, especially if the person now has free time for herself and still feels fit enough to handle the studies... there is no age limiting that!! of course, if going back to school would mean leading to a better future, getting certificates to alter your position in society or start your own thing... then I'd say the sky is the limits.
