Dysmenorrhea - A woman suffering from dysmenorrhea or menstrual cramps. PAINFUL :(

For guys, what do you do when someone close to you (mom, wife, girlfriend, friend, etc.) experiences dysmenorrhea/menstrual cramps? Do you help them? Make them feel better, etc? What do you do? For girls, what do YOU do when you experience dysmenorrhea or menstrual cramps? Whenever I'm on my first day of period, I experience severe dysmenorrhea. It's so severe that I can't stand up straight, I vomit, and I can't sit or lay down still due to the pain. It's more severe than what you can imagine. I think I got it in my genes because my mom said that she was like this too during her teenage years. What I used to do was to place a hot compress on my lower abdomen. Now, all I do is drink painkillers (mefenamic acid), but it takes a lot of minutes before the pain subsides. When the medicine already starts to show its effect, I feel really relieved because I don't feel any pain anymore. But a few hours after, I need to drink again because it's really really painful.:/ So for guys, share your experiences with your loved ones who'd experienced dysmenorrhea. For girls, share your experiences yourselves. :| Does anyone know a cure for this (NOT painkillers or hot compress, something that will really stop me from having dysmenorrhea every again)?

I usually just rub my girlfriends back because that seems to always help calm her down and helps to put her to sleep. Also talking people through their pain can be extremely beneficial. Are you taking birth control? Perhaps you are feeling some strange side effects from birth control. If not I'm sorry for the way your body works but I'm sure holisitic medicine will have plenty of simple remedies that would help you with cramps. Gemstones have healing properties and I know that there are certain ones that are extremely beneficial to menstruating women. Holistic medicine will provide you with your best answer to trying to subside your pain.

Gemstones are basically rocks. Some examples of gemstones would be quartz, jasper, onyx, malachite, and there's plenty of others. Here's a website that has a list of gemstones as well as all of their healing properties: http://shimmerlings.com/gemstones.htm You should be able to find some stones on their that will help you with menstrual cramps if you are interested. I remember my girlfriend browsing stones on there and seeing one that was designed to help with cramps as well as menstruation I just can't remember which kind it was. Hopefully you can get better soon. Have a good one friend.

Myself, i suffer from SPM but dysmenorrhea it was before, now i stop having it. I didn't do anythiing, when i have my periods, when years past, the suffer change from one pain to another pain. Several year ago, i had nothing, no pain. One year ago, it was like you big cramps and vomit. Now, it changes to small nauseas and ballon-fat. It changes by itself, i didn't do nothing but i hope a day, we will all find a solution for this pain, really not good at all these red periods. o

I did a mistake: it is PMS not spm xD, for Premenstrual syndrome. For me, i prefer to drink hot water with honey and sugar, it helps for nauseas. ^^

Ohh, yea I suffer from PMS, too. Lol. Anyway, honey and sugar? That sounds yummyy. Too bad there isn't a lot of honey being sold here. :/ But if I find one in the grocery, I'll definitely buy a jar. It really sounds tasty, and since I always feel nauseous when I have cramps, I guess it will be of great help. Thanks so much!

If you don't mind me asking, what's SPM? And I do drink some hot choco, and I thought that maybe it could help. But I'm not really sure if it does. Lol. Thanks for sharing!

How about a hot water bottle or you can buy now a small machine called A Tens machine. This is excellent. It is also good for bad backs and for woman who have aches and pains in pregnancy. Also try eating a ginger biscuit. Goodness knows why this works but it does.

If you want to try ginger as a remedy, don't go for a ginger biscuit or cookie. It doesn't contain enough ginger to be effective, and all the sugar isn't going to do you any good. Try ginger tea instead, or eating some crystallized ginger. Crystallized ginger still has sugar, but at least it has enough actual ginger to be somewhat effective. Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties that can help with aches and pains and it will also calm an upset stomach, so it may be of some help to you.

I never knew that about ginger. All I knew was that ginger ale could help the throat and voicebox or something. I should try that then. Although it may be hard since I don't like the taste of ginger. Lol. Thanks, thyst07!

What's A Tens machine? How does it work, and where can I buy one? Lol. Mind sharing more info? I'm kind of curious. Haha. And oh, ginger biscuit? Should I bake some myself or can I just go ahead and purchase some on the store? Lol. I haven't tasted one yet, I'm not really into ginger stuff. But if it really works for dysmenorrhea, then I may go ahead and try some.

i guess 99% of women suffered dysmenorrhea or menstrual cramps or perhaps 100%. its already part of us, we might not experience it in some months then in other months you will. i also suffered it and they just advised me to drink a lot of water coz cramping is due to lack of oxygen so we need more water for blood circulation. and if your sitting just sit while you hands trying to reached the ground or put your body on your lap, if your lying just touch your shoulder with your knee. i dont know how to explain it but hope you will understand what i mean.

I know some people who don't suffer from it, or some who don't really experience much pain. And I really envy them. Oh well :/ I experience it EVERY SINGLE MONTH and it really sucks big time. :| Thank you for sharing that! I didn't know that it was because of lack of oxygen, so I guess I really should start drinking a lot of water, especially now that there is extreme heat here in our country. And I get the positions that you're trying to say. I will really try them next month. Thank you so much again for sharing!

Yes, I am in the same situation as you whenever my period came. There is a chinese medicine "???" (Bai Feng Wan, loosely translated as White Phoenix Pill (I don't know the actual English name for this medicine so if anyone knows the name, please kindly provide it here) that can be taken to help ease the pain but the medicine has to be taken during the times before menstruation comes or 1 week after the menstruation ends. But the medicine is very strong for me, I don't take it regularly and thus, my alternative was pain killer which I want to kill this habit. I think walking helps to reduce the pain but not prolong walking. The next method is to rest on my bed and take short naps.

I also want to kill the habit of taking painkillers, because I might develop a tolerance to it and it might lose its effect on me. :/ And when I suffer from it, I really can't walk, I feel dizzy and I feel like I'm going to throw up or collapse. :/

Hi jeeyah, I had experience dysmenorrhea only once in my life and I can't forget how painful it was that I almost experience the same thing you stated... That was almost 20 years ago. Since then I exercise regularly and I made sure to do bending 100 counts everyday a week before my menstruation. I took also calcium and iron for 1 week before and after my menstruation. Since I practice that I did'nt experience dysmenorrhea anymore. My friends got envious I don't feel anything when its my period time. I feel so relaxed.

You're so lucky you only experienced it once! :| What kind of bending and exercise do you usually do? I don't know if I'll be able to do that 100 counts because I'm busy with stuff, so yea. :/ But maybe I'll try it whenever I got free time, as well as that calcium and iron thing. Thank you so much for sharing! And I envy you, too. :| Lol

I don't know what the cure is but I do know some things that make it worse. THanks Be to God am now finished with that..but .. To stop increasing or prologing the situaion..Women may want to avoid the salty snacks ..Taking tylenol or other pain relievers always works. I hve found tea as strong as can be handled helps with pain relief. Avoid activity that is overly exertive as well. Joy

I didn't know that salty snacks could make it worse. Is that true? I've heard the thing about sour snacks, but I thought all those were just myths. And I shall buy some tea and drink some on my next painful quest (lol). Thank you so much for sharing those information!

Hi jeeyah, I was trying to find cure (so it will not have this kind of discomfort ever) but I couldn't find any. They offer temporary treatment and will help ease the pain. These includes self care treatment like taking pain reliever (these are over the counter medicine), hot pad, taking a hot shower and exercise regularly. This kind of discomfort during menstrual period will lessen as you grow older, meanwhile, all I can advice is take pain reliever, do the hot shower and place a hot compress (you're doing it right).

I think I remember reading something on a website about a permanent cure to dysmenorrhea, but I didn't think that it was legit so I ignored it. Now I'm so desperate to find a cure that I'm hoping I come across that kind of information again. Anyway, I guess my mom taught me well. Lol. She passed onto me those solutions, so yea. Thank you very much for the response!

Like you I also suffer from dysmenorrhea on my first day. Since I know this will happen to me, I immediately drink 500mg of Mefenamic Acid. I don't take the generic ones, it takes quite some time before they take effect. This is not the time to scrimp and save. The pain is excruciating and I take preventive measures. Afterwards, I go to the gym and exercise. I refrain from staying in bed curled up because it will definitely worsen when I uncurl myself. I refrain from abdominal exercises but I do some exericises for lower back. A strong back will support your abdominal muscles. If its really bad, I take a hot bath. But this is rare. Usually, my preventive measures work. Hope this helped!

I also do that whenever I know that the pain is bound to come soon. But sometimes, I get caught off guard and I just wake up with severe pain in my tummy and blood-stained underwear (SORRY FOR SAYING THIS. HAHA) And that's actually what my mom said, that I lack exercise that's why the pain gets so severe sometimes. It's just hard to start moving when I feel that the pain is already consuming me. But maybe I should do what you do and exercise after the pain has temporarily subsided. What kind of exercises for lower back do you usually do? Thank you!

I actually take the holistic approach on matters. Eat the foods high in vitamins that seem to make it easier to handle. I have use acupuncture for other things and it has worked quite well. Note thought I am afraid of needles so this was a task in its own, lol. Finding a person that knows what they are doing and doing it well. The link below is informative but I also consult with a physician that deals with holistic methods and treatments. I do not like popping either when I can eat right and still gain the benefit of vitamins naturally. Take care hope you feel better. http://www.evitamins.com/encyclopedia/assets/health-condition/dysmenorrhea/vitamins-and-supplements

I'm highly afraid of the thought of needles penetrating my skin, so I don't know if I would be able to handle acupuncture. :/ This sucks, but I guess if I really run out of cures or treatments, I may try it someday. I bookmarked that link that you gave me, I really found it super helpful. :D Thank you so much for sharing!!

It hurts a lot. I wish the guys in our family would know how much it hurts so they wouldn't think that I was just making a drama. Argh. I don't really take in pain relievers because I might get depended on those. I just eat peanuts.

I'm lucky that my mom perfectly knows the feeling, so she explains it to my dad. Some people (even girls) sometimes think that dysmenorrhea isn't that bad because they don't experience it as extremely as some of us (like me) do. I also don't want to take pain relievers as much as possible, but I am totally left with no choice. I feel like I'm going to die if I don't take some, so I've nothing left to do. No other cure works for me. :/ Anyway, do peanuts really work for you?

Being a man, I can't know exactly the pain that women feel when having cramps but I do know a few tricks that help my wife. Usually, if she can feel the cramps are starting she will take a few Midol with some hot chamomile tea. And like what was said before, lite exercise helps her to relieve some of the pain. Usually we'll go for a walk at the mall or through the neighborhood, if the weather isn't so warm. Also, for her, staying cool helps to relieve cramps. If she is too hot, not only will she have cramps, but she'll feel really nauseated. As for what I can do for her, I sometimes will massage her back, especially her lower back, or I'll massage her feet. I know that sounds weird, but I think there are some pressure points in the feet that help relieve pain in the abdomen. Those are the things I do for her to help her out!

May I ask where you can buy some chamomile tea? Like what brand or something? Lol. I should try that. And I guess massaging the feet does help or something. Because sometimes when I'm laying down, I tend to push my feet against something, and if it stays there at a certain angle, I start to relax and the pain lessens. Thank you so much for sharing!!

I've never had cramps bad enough to make me vomit, but I have had cramps bad enough that I've missed school or work because of the pain. If you can, you really ought to see a doctor. Pain that's so bad you vomit isn't normal and you shouldn't have to live with it every month. Your doctor might prescribe some form of birth control. Even if you don't need it for protection from pregnancy, it can still be a good option to regulate your period, and many women have shorter, lighter periods and less cramping while taking birth control- I know I do! It's also possible to use birth control to have periods less frequently, or even stop having periods altogether. As far as I know, that's the only way to not ever have dysmenorrhea again. Aside from that, you should take a look at your diet. You should be eating plenty of whole grains, vegetables, lean proteins, and some healthy fats. You should try to minimize consumption of sugar, refined grains, and unhealthy fats. Eating a healthy diet might not cure your problem completely, but in general your body will function better if you eat a healthier diet, and it is true that some women experience worse cramps because of a poor diet. You should also get plenty of exercise, especially in the week or so right before your period. I find that chamomile tea helps relax my cramps a little, ginger tea will sooth an upset stomach, and peppermint tea helps with bloating and headaches.

I'm still a bit young, and my mom never told me to see the doctor. She just tells me to do what the doctor had recommended her when she was my age. :/ I really want to see a doctor, but it seems that my mom doesn't think that it's needed. Anyway, I was also thinking about birth control as a cure, because I heard it has effects on the menstrual cycle. I eat a lot of grains and vegetables, and I don't eat too much sugar, but maybe it's the unhealthy fats or something. Lol. Thank you so much for sharing those remedies! Super thank you!

Dysmenorrhea or menstrual cramps. i will suggest that you'll gonna intake "midol" medicine if you got this so called dysmenorrhea. Midol is very effective for me, but there are times that this medicine do not listen. if i have my menstrual cramps i couldn't walk and my stomach ache so much, the usual alternative i am doing is just sleeping and when i woke up the pains of menstrual cramps already disappear.

My mom also let me take "Midol" because it's what her doctor had recommended her back then, but I found plain mefenamic acid to work just as well. So it's all good. And I also do that too, I just sleep sometimes (when I can) and let the medicine take effect. Thanks for sharing!

Drink painkillers, lie on the bed with a pillow on your lower back, sleep :) I get really bad cramps as well, as in my face gets washed out, I look ghastly and I can't even move. My ex-boyfriend saw me in this state before, and poor guy just didn't know what to do hahaha If you really want to get rid of it, I think exercising regularly plus stretching/Yoga/flexibility exercises can greatly help. I know because during my first two years in college I was taking Yoga and stretching and dance classes on a regular basis. When my period came, it simply went by without me having to writhe on the floor on the first day. But the following year, I stopped these activities and voila, I was back to torture. Slowly I incorporated exercise back into my routine, and I'm getting better.

I do drink painkillers (as what I have said on my post), and I really can't do that position. The pain is too severe that I can't lay down still and I can't stretch my abdomen. I guess I would really consider exercising. Thank you so much!
