AC will stop paying performance payments for international writers starting May 1. So sad. I've started a discussion detailing this, as well as Helium's apparent selective logins for non-US writers, under the 'writing' interest: www.mylot.com/w/discussion/2305651.aspx?p=0 I'm just reposting it here in case a fellow MyLotter-slash-AC-contributor doesn't see this under the 'writer' thread.

Did they give a reason? I like mylot because of its international flavor. In fact, I have a lot of friends from India now, and it made me want to go into an Indian grocery store I found the other day. There were selling samosas for a dollar. Potato and pea, so good. And I bought a coconut water and a spicy dal and noodle snack that brought back memories of when I was a teen and we would get these fun spicy snacks at our local Indian grocery store. They also sold these little triangle cakes that were slightly sweet(maybe almond paste?)but the guy said he didn't know what I was talking about and complained he had needed a root canal and instead of getting it done, he had to get the tooth removed. OOf.

lOL. Anyways, I researched stuff...turns out it has to do with the FATCA or Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act passed by the US senate in March. Something to do with having to account for offshore accounts more than $50k. Which is weird, considering what you can get from Performance Payments is like just $5 a month...unless they have 10,000 international writers... Anyway, sucks

So, let me get this straight, you aren't even a US citizen and you're being penalized by a US law? I know the people who pay may be US, but I don't think they would make a fortune, I'm sure they pay taxes, or do they? Hmmm. It do sux big ol' donkey balls with a straw thru it's nose/

Hi Justdroppingby, apparently it's the change in taxation law. I wonder what actions other writing sites are going to take. This law affects all the companies sending out payment to non-US taxpayers. It is certainly a very stupid move on the part of the government. After all, websites such as Amazon.com has many affiliate marketers from all over the world as well. I think this problem is not within the control of Associated Content. The only way is to set up offshore company, with a non-US domain name. Let us see how this legal drama enfolds.

Yeah, I tried reading up about it on the news but the only clue I got was the FATCA law passed in the US in March (read comment above). I think the US had other things in mind when he pushed the bill (something about preventing money laundering abroad), I just hope it will get amended to take into consideration the worldwide web marketplace. Haven't seen any lobbying activity yet though...

I was sad to see that international writers cannot make money with this site anymore. This site is where I make the most money so it is sad that others cannot use this site. I guess im lucky to be living in a country that is allowed to write for them but I dont think it is fair to others. I really love this website and Im sorry that others cannot write for them.

To me it sounds like this new bill they wrote into the US, the health bill, has alot more in it than everyone has realized yet. That bill was over 5000 pages, I myself would like to get a full copy of what it all has in it. Thing is I haven't been able to find it in complete form as of yet. So many new things are happening after this bill was signed. I don't feel it is the programs fault at all, laws have been changed and we the members and the owners are going to suffer from it. Maybe they don't like it that we can make an income without spending so much on extra's daily, gas, car, insurance, food, and heck even clothes. Don't have to buy those expensive suits to work on here. Anyways don't always blame the program, laws are changing everywhere for online work, usage, and business. Watch for that more than anything.

Come to think of it, I wonder if this is the reason so many programs are having trouble with the payment processors, like paypal and alertpay. Something to think about. Like I said it isn't always the programs that are trying to scam us, it could be a whole other reason.

Justdroppingby, I didn't realize they passed that one. I don't always watch the news here, it gets to depressing. Scheng1, the programs that haven't been affected could already have the tax stuff already implemented within their sites. I don't know for sure. I do know that I have filled out tax info for several programs to get paid over the past year. Maybe some already figured it was coming and prepared it that way. Take a look at what Justdroppingby said, New law signed in March. Thing is we will probably be experiencing more of new laws as this grows. To me its another way to separate the people of all worlds by government.. sorry its an opinion I have. Keep the racism card going.. instead of working together as one world. Doesn't mean will will all get along, but we can try to work together and make the world better for all the people, instead of just those that feel they are better than everyone else. Yeah I know its dream..

Hi Youreyes4today, I don't think it has anything to do with the health reform act. See my earlier comments above.
