Is Fiber Optic going to dominate the Internet industry

Hey everyone what do you think. I've noticed that in Chicago we started having Fiber Optic internet or FIOS as they call it, and I really want to get it because they say its so much faster. I've heard you can download a movie in seconds. But do you believe that Fiber Optic Internet will dominate the Internet Industry? Is this the future? Can we go beyond Fiber Optic speed? What do you think?

Fiber optic is available since a year and a half in my town and I switched to it. It's really faster when you are on a fiber optic network : my 100 Mb/s connection downloads at 78-80 Mb/s in this case. But it will probably not dominate the internet because it costs too much to install. It will be always reserved to large cities and will probably never spread in small towns and in the countryside. Have a nice day.

I think it will be sometime before they actually switch it to a big city area. Like in Chicago they don't have it here from what the cable technician told me today that its available in the suburbs but it would be quite sometime to install it here because they have to close down streets to install it for Chicago and thats something the companies aren't planning to do anytime soon.

Recently I switch to the ISP which offer fiber optic internet connection. It's speed seems like faster than the conventional ISP. I am not sure if the higher speed is due to the fiber optics transmission nature or this new ISP is having a greater bandwidth capability. Besides, the internet fee is reasonable base on the service provided. Ya, I think the future trend is moving towards fiber optics cabling network. Theoretically, light travel faster than electrical signals. So, the fiber optic signal transmission should be faster. However, the processing center is also important, or else it might become the bottleneck and it's pointless to have the hi-speed signal transmissions. Base on the past technological history, new architectures keep on emerging unexpectedly. Therefore, I strongly believe there will be system faster and more efficient than the fiber optics invented.

Hi richlatino2012, thanks a lot for the BR given. Didn't expect it. Oh ya, btw, the ISP that I am using is having a website. http://www.penangfon.com.my/overview.html Seems like they are further beyond the fiber optics. They are using Optical Ethernet now. I didn't finish all the reading, but obviously they are exploring on the optical technology. Happy posting and have a nice day!

At this point, anything is better than most Cable providers, especially with their horrible customer service. lol But serious talk, Fiber Optics is gonna be the way to go and eventually once it's all over the place, it will be affordable to many. Heck, most people are fine with paying what they're paying now for it anyways.

yes fiber optic probably can do that over internet... fiber optics transmission is much better than cat five wires use in internet connection nowadays... fiber optics probably will dominate them and will eradicate them for sure... for my opinion...
