What features do you use most in your cellphone?

Cellphones are becoming lighter, smaller and thinner. And yet they have more features than those of the olden days when cellphones were big blocks (true, my father-in-law loves to tell me the time he had a cellphone the size of a brick and the battery was the size of a briefcase - sure he exaggerates a bit, but not too far from the truth). Manufacturing Companies and Service provider are fighting to pack more and more features into this small gadgets. We now have Camera, Games, Music Player, GPRS, Internet, etc. We have the basic features that most of us use regularly like calling, receiving calls, SMS, Phonebook, etc. I use the camera regularly, I can't be bothered with other stuff (a case of 'by the time I learn how to do it, it becomes boring). What features do you use most often - Apart from the regular features? Do you think it's really necessary to have all this features and functions?

Yeah, phonebook really helped. I used to have a good memory for remembering phone numbers. After I started using mobile phones, I cannot remember any numbers at all. It is so easy just to save someone's number and bring it up again when you need it.

Me too. Like I mentioned before, you don't always remember to take your camera along with you. So the cellphone camera comes quite handy. See my proof on the other topic that I have posted - 'How can you speed up a camel' - I have posted a picture I have taken with my cell phone.

Yes, the cell phones are getting smaller that's for sure. The batteries are somewhat better too, although I have heard that some are getting sub standard batteries to save costs on the phone. I only use my for text and phoning, I do not have a keyboard on mine. It is an older Motorola and does not have a camera. They locked the phone so if I want new ring tones or wallpaper I have to buy it through the service. I have no desire to get a camera phone, nor one that plays music. I would however like to have an ipad that has a phone built in. It would be nice to have a decent camera in an ipad too. Then I could compute, photograph, text and phone, all with a decent screen size to see what I am doing. I do like an independent camera though for good photos. I suppose a cell phone camera is good for snapping a pic of the guy who just cut you off in traffic, or some other spur of the moment thing where pic quality is secondary.

Camera phones don't really take good pictures, in my opinion. Though some of the new ones have really good camera these days and not having those, I can't really say the quality of photographs. The ones that I had so far, you can't really use them to take photographs. I do take photos, but only those that are not going to be used, as in just for enjoyment really.

well except those basic features i often use stopwatch and the calculator. yes i think they must have extra features because it will add more use to that thing in your pocket. if my phone has just the basic features i might not bring it at all. yes i have those kind of phones but it is cool that you are almost certain that people will look at you lol even in the early 90's most people havent seen or heard of a cellphone

I know....I used to have a Nokia 3310 back in 2001/2 and it was still considered hot back then. I had a phase when I wanted to have all the new features in my phone and the latest model. I grew out of it. There are so many models these days now and unless you have more money than sense, you really can't keep up with it.

Things like data connections, cameras, and te web are so common place anymore. I don't think twice about them. In fact most all my phones are web-capable camera phones. I love the "basic" features they offer, because I usually do a lot of texting with occassinal talking. So those would be my favorite features.

Hi nessosamu, so you have a good use out of your phone then. That's good. I am finding now that I use more features than I realised. And some of the features that I thought I would not use, I am using them now.

Besides using my mobile phone mainly for making calls and writing text messages, the features I use most is the music player and the radio. By the way, I am using a Sony Ericsson Walkman phone, which is well-known for its superb sound quality.

I had a Sony Ericsson phone about 3 years ago. I loved it until I dropped it in the toilet bowl. Needless to say, it was a goner. Then I bought another one which got lost. Now I use Nokia. I don't really mind what brand it is. As long as I can use it, I'm fine with it.

Sounds like you are pretty much like me. I don't use them much, but that's about what I do with my phone.

Yes, you're right that the old size of cellphones are quite big and bulky with a briefcase size battery. One disadvantage of the olden days cellphones are having limited features only (call and text and in black & white color). I often used my cellphone for calling and messaging only and of course the camera especially if I forgot to bring with me my digital cam. And sometimes, I also used my music player but never the internet. As for your question of is it necessary to have all this features and functions? Yes, in the sense that having these features and functions (esp. the internet) are good for people on the go and no, in the sense that having too many functions in cellphones are a bit confusing to old people.

Majority of people seems so use the same way, calling, texting, etc. As for the features, I think you are right about that. It is good for people on the go and people who use them. And there are lots and lots of basic phone available for basic user too.

I mostly use my mobile phone to browse the web on the go. I feel that it is the most useful thing that I use in it. But when I am at home already I use the PC which I can't totally use or carry. Even the laptop is not that portable or on the go when you are walking or something like that. I usually browse lots and lots of social networking sites that is why I truly love mobile web browsing.

I don't have the wifi features on my phone, at least I don't think so. And I don't like browsing the internet on the phone as the screen is too small for me. I'm getting old, I guess.

Sounds like you don't really need all the features then. Personally, I don't think I need any of that. Well, I listen to music these days, and I don't use it for anything else apart from calling and occasionally, for taking pictures.

Mobiles are a part of life. Almost all people in this world use the cell phone in order to communicate with others. In that,I used to use the mobile for all the purposes as all the features of a mobile are effective. Most of the time when i get bored i use the music or entertainment feature in my mobile to get myself engaged with it.

Do you have to purchase the map or it comes free with your service/phone? I'd like to have it, but I'm not really sure how to go about it.

Mostly I use the internet, and although it isn't necessary to have the features once you get used to having them available they feel necessary. I can browse anywhere I want and I do everything free online. I look at myspace, facebook and much more throughout the day. I am also a huge texter. Infact the only thing I don't do on my phone is talk. I maybe use 300 minutes a month talking the rest is internet and texting. I am surprised how few people use the internet on their phone.

It's great if you are actually using it. For a person like me, who just use it for calling or occasional photograph, there is no point in buying a fully loaded phone. It just shoots up the price unnecessarily. But for those who do use the features, isn't technology great?
