How many nukes should America have?

I have just seen on TV that America currently has 5113 nuclear warheads. Isn't that a little excessive? Overkill or what? Now, not with standing which side you may be on, for or against, how many are really needed? That is to say, assuming that a deterrent is required, how many warheads would be enough for protection in your opinion?

Where did you see that at? What channel? If its true I would say its overkill. But then I haven't seen the story. I can't comment on rumors.

Hey, it's TV! There isn't any link! I can't remember which program it was. CNN repeats itself every six hours - perhaps I'll see it again.
