Is the Internet speed through WiFi slower than through a LAN cable/etherne?

I am a university student. My housemates and I share a DSL connection. We access it through protected WiFi connection. My father, a computer engineer, told me that we should switch to LAN cables because the speed will be much faster but the wires are very messy. Why is it that the speed of the Internet slower in WiFi than in ethernet?

using wired connection is faster because data transfers directly from the source to the medium but when you use wifi connection data travels to the wifi adaptor then converts the data signal to radio signal then transmits it to your reciever the converts the radio signal to data signal again...you see a lot of activity is working when you use wifi unlike when you use wired connection...i hope i have helped you with this....

You are using inter through ADSL connection and then you are sharing through wifi to many. its absolutely nice. through wifi you will get maximum speed there is no need to bother. you dont loose speed of ur net. wires: no no carry on. with wifi.

reason is that WiFi uses air as a shipping and receiving signals. If the network signal is weak then it's work is slow and if you have 100% signal then the probability that will be equal to the speed when you are using a LAN. But because the WiFi is have filtration system to encrypt or description data, causing WiFi should work a little slower than the LAN.

cables are more stable.

i think if both of you are not very far then the wireless connection can give you the moderate speed. there is no huge difference. as i use both kind of connections at my home the LAN and the wifi. but at both connection i got almost the same speed. yes i agree that in wireless connections there are more errors in data transmissions which could take more time to send data. but wifi is better some time rather then putting around the cables.

if you have an internet connection faster than 54 mbits then is faster the cable, yet is something almost imposible for most of the networks, most of the time is just up to 20 something mbits. you shouldnt worry for that unless you want to trasnfer files to your friends in the same network. there you see a difference.

for wi-fi there will lot of disturbances like noise around you. the waves are ratio active waves and also distance coverage plays a role. usually lan are based on sound waves and of optical technology and as less disturbances.

Hi, No matter how we advance our wireless technology, it will always have less speed than traditional Ethernet connections. This is because wireless signals are subjected to much more noise and interference, which a LAN, being perfectly protected in sheathing, doesn't. The electromagnetic interference often distorts the signal and makes it difficult to access the information coded within. Whereas LAN being a physical medium, eliminates most of these factors. Thanks God bless you

Same university student here. Is it a boarding house? I am also living in a rented unit (rented condo) and we have shared connection throughout our floor which means walls, stairs, and people passing by are signal interference which fluctuates our connection. If your connection is inside a room, it would be better but speed is lowered by probably 5% of its original speed. Messy wires are the only problem on LAN. Routers may encounter some problems someday and can be unusable for some sort of reason. A router will cost much to be replaced. Unlike LAN cables, it is cheaper. I suggest that you keep it Wireless if it is only inside a room unless if the Internet Service Provider is not compatible with you router. SmartBro works well with routers and PLDT have some problems with it :D

Hey Cr0ssf41r13, Well it would all depend on how fast your Internet connection is. You can find out at speedtest.net... A wired connection speed is usually and most commonly 100mbps. A wireless wifi connection is usually 54mbps. An average internet connection is usually less then 5mbps, especially for DSL. So as you can see, would upgrading from 54 to 100 really help you when all you need is about 5 for the internet? Now if it is not just internet you are doing you may want to go wired. If you are LAN gaming (not over the internet) or if you are sharing files over a network then I would go wired but if all you are doing is surfing the web, all you need is the wireless connection. Also if you believe you want the speed of 100mbps. You can always purchase a router that supports greater then 100mbps wireless connections. In your case I would just stick to the wireless. Especially if all you do is browse the internet. If you are experiencing a slow Internet, it's not due to your type of conecction but it IS due to the service from your provider. If you are experincing slow internet you may want to consider purchasing a faster connection from yout ISP. (Interent Service Provider) Hopefully this will answer your question. Good Luck! And please, please ask me any other question that may be on your mind! I am very, very happy to help! I enjoy computer networking VERY much! :) -BestComputerGeek
