http://new.uk.music.yahoo.com/blogs/guestlist/26929/anger-over-julie-andrews-lacklustre-performance/ This gig was all about Julie Andrews and The Sound Of Music. Now, I saw the Sound of Music on television years ago when it first came out. Obviously, Julie was a lot younger then so could reach all the high notes, unlike now. For God's sake this woman is 74 years old and has - by her own admission, had an operation on her vocal chords that went wrong, therefore to replicate what she did centuries ago is nigh on impossible! I'm sorry, but I don't have any sympathy for people who fork out wads of cash to watch a singer who is way past her prime. I am not having a go at Julie here, she has been honest about how she can sing. I blame the public for being so stupid!! What do you think?

Oh well! Fans will pay big bucks just to see their idols. For me Julie Andrews was an old fashioned singer even when I was a child. The Films she was in were old and had done the rounds in America long before we got them on TV. Do you remember Billy Liar that used to be on the TV? It was a comedy series every week and Billy's Grandmother used to always mention how much she loved the sound of music and start singing 'the Hills are alive.'.. it made it more of an old persons film than ever in my eyes. LOL. I did always love the Mary Poppins scene with the Nursery tidying itself though.

Bedknobs and Broomsticks, was a separate film which starred Angela Lansbury, who plays Jessica Fletcher in Murder she Wrote. this was the one with the suits of armour marching along to vanquish the invading germans during the 2nd world war

Reminds me of Frank Sinatra and his Duets albums. You could really hear that his voice was going. I'd rather remember him the way he was in his glory days!

Dancers have to stop because of pain or dizziness or something. Singers that are that famous can still sell CDs and tickets.

What I can't understand is that other performers know when to quit...like ballet dancers because their bodies are kn*ckered so why should the voice be any different? Just a thought!

It's such a shame that she is no longer the singer she was. She's done some animated movies - Shrek I think - and done a great job. But as you get older, I'm sure you lose some of your "flair". But at least she's not doing what the younger crowd does and just lipsinc it!

She was brilliant doing the voice-over in Shrek. So it's not as if she needed the money is it? Some promoter must've told her that it was a great idea to do the show. I only hope her voice hasn't suffered more damage through the singing. I'd sue!!

eh..some people go just for the enjoyment of actually seeing the person, they could be reading the evening paper on stage and they'd still go. heck, even robert plant's lost some of his range, but he still sells out.

I can't understand the mentality of people who just wanna be there and pay a premium as a consequence of that belief. Don't they realise that the only people benefitting are promoters? Julie Andrews would've been paid a "wedge" but her reputation is now in tatters because of her vocal inadequacies and the fact that 2000 people walked out of her gig. No doubt the fans (the ones that gallantly stayed behind) of Julie Andrews were too young to really appreciate her when she was around 30 years ago so wanted to see her now regardless of her abilities but I'm sorry, that doesn't excuse them forking out all that cash, it doesn't make any sense to me, especially with the downturn in the economy, made worse by this stupid coalition that will bring the country to its knees. Perhaps they wanted to enjoy themselves (well, sort of) before the tickets got even more expensive than they are already.

I did see the news that she had an op to bring back the voice that made her so famous. I'm not a particular big fan of hers, but i can understand people who want to see her. she is a legend and there aren't too many legends about these days. its not so much the voice , its who she is and seeing her live, being in the same arena as her. I am trying to think who i would want to see live , who is (like me) past it, i could only think of the rolling stones, (who are still rolling along as far as i am aware) the beatles or elvis !!! so not much chance there.

Ha ha, you are absolutely right. I can remember them when they were young fresh faced boys ( now I am REALLY showing my age ) and even when Brian Jones was with them ( yes I know.. Brian who???) I look at these crinkly faced gents and think oh my goodness, do I look like that now

A friend of mine absolutely LOVES The Rolling Stones, even now. It's amazing they can still walk, never mind performing!

I don't know if I would have paid that much for Julie, or anyone else for that matter. But if given the chance to go see Julie, I might have done it, not for what she does now so much as for what she's done. I've seen the Sound of Music over 35 times...and simply love Julie Andrews...old, bad vocal chords, or not.

There must have been many fans in the audience like you then, is all I can say. Don't you think she could've mimed? I know that's cheating, in a way but many performers much younger than her do it at so-called "live" gigs. If someone like Julie Andrews, aged 74 did it then I think her fans would forgive her, don't you?

If she could sing like she did when she was in her 20s and 30s, I would have known and that I think would have been a disappoint. This way I know she's in her 70s, her voice is "ruined", but I would have still appreciated the effort AND it still would have been seeing Julie Andrews. I'd love to meet her!

The public is being stupid, like you said. Any fan of Julie Andrews knows that she had a surgery that took away half her vocal range. If they were so desperate to see her perform that they paid $140 per ticket, then they should have realized she might not sing as well as they expected her to.

My thoughts exactly. Whoever persuaded Julie to come out of retirement should hang their heads in shame. It's all about money, of course but silly members of the public have been duped into thinking they're going to get a good show. However, like you say, true fans of hers would know about her botched operation so whether they stayed away is unclear. It's a sham no matter which way you look at it though!
