MyLot Has A Sense Of Humor!

United States
May 13, 2010 6:45am CST
Or at least the programmers on myLot have a sense of humor (as well as at least one of the Admins that posts on here). Today I encountered an error trying to get to a discussion, but instead of the generic "Page Not Found" error, I was met with a woeful tale from a poor webserver. I stayed on the error page for several minutes reading this webserver's tale of misery. I really felt sorry for the poor little guy but at the same time I couldn't help laughing, because it made my day seem so much better in comparison. So, have you encountered this poor little webserver yet, and did he tell you the same sad tale of woe that he rambled on to me about? Have you encountered humor in unexpected places lately or are you one of those people that has had "humor by-pass surgery"?

Dang, now I'm going to WANT to get a server error just so I can see that... I do recall at my last company that on one of the home grown systems, instead of logoff, you could type "dog" and a little dog would go yapping across the screen and log you off. I used to go into that system just to see it!

Dawn, that is really cute! I would like to see something like that. Yes, I did not mind getting the error page in this instance, because it was more entertaining than annoying. I think that more sites should do things like that, because it would make it a lot more fun for the users, even when they do not get what they want. And by the way, I believe that proves that myLot actually wants us to have fun despite the claims that I have read from certain other members. Sunny - Thanks for the link. I would have included one in my discussion, but I did not have any idea how I got to the error page.

LOL. I remember that one. Ive seen it somewhere else too. I stayed on the page for a few minutes wondering at what state will the story end but I couldnt stay on the page for too long because at the times when I encountered them, I was in a hurry researching something for school work. It did lighten up the stress of school work a bit. I was thinking of reading it when I have the time but I couldnt seem to find it. Hopefully, the next time I see it, I would have time to read it through to the end.^_^ Oh, I dont mind reading a bit of spoilers.

Really? So it just goes on and on to different topics relating to its woes? Hmm, now Im even more curious about the ending. It seems like an interesting mystery.

I am not sure that it does end. I am not sure exactly how long I sat there reading it, but it was for quite a while, because it really was quite entertaining. I kept thinking that it would end, but it just kept going and going and going ... rather like the "Energizer Bunny". In fact, it even mentions bunnies at one point in its ramblings ... coincidence or a hint perhaps? Either way, I found it very refreshing to encounter humor in an otherwise frustrating place like an error message page.

Morning! You going to be stalking the webserver from now on as well? Yes I saw him about a year ago and am amazed when I still see him every time I type something wrong. Still there typing with no recognition from anyone. You think he gets paid each month too or is it a repeated topic seeing as he keeps saying the same thing over and over again?

Hi there sweetie! I am definitely considering adding that poor webserver to my list of stalking candidates. He seems so sad and lonely that I think it would just be the right thing to do. I am wondering whether or not the message changes. I mean, he must get tired typing the same thing over and over again each time someone visits him. On the other hand, nobody can report him for spamming as he is definitely verbose.

Oh no! Definately not a spammer like that other guy huh? So I read through the lines and deduct that your victims are sad and lonely. I would never have guessed, if you hadn't made it clear, that they all fit into that category

I think I've met the guy once or twice while I've been in mylot all this while. It sure is a rare encounter, I must say...almost like almost one has seen a ghost... Carny description there, LOL... Anyway, I like your phrase of the day; humor by-pass surgery. That's awesome. I call the page not found error as the mystery 404. That one is a rockafella baby too; I don't wish to see it often. Glad to see you back, and hope you are on a regular basis this time, sweets.

Sorry for this late reply, Purple.. it seems there's a bug in my mailbox..and I've just managed to fix it. The mystery 404 error, that's certainly a becoming term for me too.. ha.. some mundane error message like the typical problem loading page. I hate those words, ha..

Zed! It is good to see you around again, too! LOL - I am glad that you liked my phrase, although I cannot take the credit for creating it as I have heard it around somewhere before and it just seemed appropriate that day. I do like how you refer to the error as "the mystery 404 error". That at least makes it sound more interesting than some old mundane error message.

*passes Zed a can of Insect Zapper to help get rid of the bug in his mailbox* I hate it when that happens (both the bugs and the typical problem loading page error message). It is good that you have fixed the problem with your mailbox. Now are you ready to tackle the loading page error? You are going to leave that to me you say? Coward!

Hey Sunny, not only am I back, but I have started two discussions in the same number of days! You should definitely mark this day on the calendar, although that might be pointless as the world must be coming to an end for this to have happened. Lamb - Thank you for the link. I was not sure how I got to the page with the error message all I knew is that I found myself there and got caught up in his sad little story.

You said it : it's a sad story. How can we laugh about the misery of this poor lost soul ? The inhumanity of myLotters is distressing . Absurd as a form of humor is not appreciated by everybody, I would like to defend those sad people born like me with no sense of humor. Thanks for this pearl !

I know that I am evil to laugh at such a sad sort as this poor, lonely and abused webserver. His story really did tug at my heartstrings. Unfortunately, I was laughing too loudly at his plight to properly express my distress at his situation. I that we should start a telethon and gather donations for people that are born without a sense of humor, and then we can get the money to perform the proper surgery to reattach their funny bone to the rest of their body.

Nice idea, but we must wait an economic recovery. We can't afford to offer this surgery to 70% of the world population now .

Well every little bit helps, even if it is only pennies per month. Do you think that with that many people in need of this most serious and necessary surgery we would qualify for the "bulk rate discount"?

Hi purp. I'm struggling these days to find my sense of humour. The sadness faerie seems to have a good strong hold on me and I'm bored, lonely and keep remembering the less than happy times of my life. I feel tired and unwell and I've a very low opinion of myself. I can struggle out of this for a little bit of time then I slip back into the dark. This is so not like me that I'm not quite sure how to handle things.

Oh I am so sorry to hear that you are going through that right now, Ms.T! I am sending you a huge hug hoping that it will make you feel at least a little better! Unfortunately, I know all too well the kind of feelings that you are describing. I wish that there was some magic fairy dust that I could sprinkle over you to change it, but I have not yet found any. All that has worked was time and trying to stay positive during those periods in my life, but that is a lot easier to say than to do. I am here, though, if you wish to talk.

I have had some errors that just had the computer jargon that you are talking about, too. This one, however, was a box in the middle of the screen that kept typing away telling me how miserable and unappreciated a webserver's life is. It was really hilarious, and I think that it is wonderful that some programmers have a sense of humor and can make even an error fun. Thank you for the wish of an error free day, and I hope that you have one as well. However, at some point I do hope that you are able to meet this poor little webserver and that he brightens your day as he has done for me.

I think it’s really sad and I don’t find anything funny about it. The poor server is depressed. Have any of you ever felt so depressed you want to cry and cut yourself? Well this poor server does and I feel for it, I feel for it a lot! Heck he has a really boring job as it is and he can’t even get it right a lot of the time. He’s probably killed itself by now...

Oh no, do not worry so much about the poor little web server. I am sure that he was replaced after a few weeks, so he did not have enough time to seriously hurt himself. Besides, he was probably recycled and upgraded to a newer and more efficient and effective version, so I am sure that they included some Valium or Prozac or something like that in the upgrade process.

Yes, it really was quite funny, and it really made my day. I think that if more people and companies put a little bit of humor into every day things, then this world would be a much nicer and light-hearted place to live. Of course, humor is not appropriate in every instance, but I think that a little bit when it is appropriate would go a long way to lifting everybody's spirits and making things more fun. Have you ever noticed that when you are walking down the street and smile at someone normally their face lights up and they smile back and that smile seems to last even after they walk away? I think that a little bit of humor would be like that smile and last even after you walk away.

I saw this a while ago, and I found it very funny. I read the whole thing, and I wondered if any of their other error pages did the same thing, or similar. =P It's so refreshing to see something like this. I wish more websites did funny things like this. =D

I saw this before, but at that point I did not have the time to really read it let alone do a discussion on it. When I encountered it this time, though, I just could not help but read it, laugh, and want to share the humor with others. I agree that more websites should incorporate humor into things like this, since a small dose of humor goes a long way to making people feel better about most things.

"the page that you're looking for hasn't been created yet. please donate 10 bucks and do another search in two days. it will be ready by then. just for you." haha.. i'm laughing too much that i might have to go for that bypass surgery to remove my humor-tumor on my funny bone

Well you had me right up until the part where things were oozing out of you ... LOL @ "light bulb go off = dim" - Some people say that it is romantic, but I just think about stumbling around in the dark, stubbing my toe, and getting attacked by some horrible monster, so I would definitely have to say that your humor is more like a light bulb being turned on rather than being turned off.

LOL @ "i might have to go for that bypass surgery to remove my humor-tumor on my funny bone" - That was cute! I also like your take on what a search engine would say if it could talk. I guess that since search engines are used more they aren't as manic-depressive as webservers, so you are probably right on track with that one, too.

I do not think that there are people without any sense of humor. maybe some of them have a very hard life and they can not smile anymore. we should all think that there are people losing their childrens or husbands and wifes or parents, or, maybe, they had bad experiences. it could happen to us, too. at anytime. we should put ourselves in their shoes and emphaties with them and not judging them. and, what we can try, is to make them believe in themselves again and bring joy in their lifes. I only think so...

Yes, there are definitely things in our lives that can have an enormous impact on all aspects of our lives, especially our emotions. I also know very personally how difficult it can be to lose a loved one, especially one that I was extremely close to that I literally had to watch die. I do not have to put myself in anybody else's shoes to imagine something like that, because I lived it. Fortunately, though, I did not lose my sense of humor or the ability to laugh, even though my heart is still broken. In fact, that is one of the things that helped me make it through, although I am still not "over" what happened, and I am sure that I never will be.

Thank you for such kind and reassuring words. I am so glad that you put it in the perspective of years rather than months, because that really does show that you know exactly what I am talking about. I can tell, because some people say "after a few months" ... well, it has been a year now, and it still is just as painful as if it had happened yesterday, but I do know that after a few years it will not disappear but will hopefully at least become bearable.

Yes, if that were a real person saying those things, then it would definitely be sad and rather frightening, in my opinion. I even felt bad for the poor little web server, even though I knew it wasn't real. That is what makes it funny, though, is that web servers really can't feel emotion like that, so we can laugh at it without offending or hurting anyone.

Hmmm, that is indeed a very good sense of humor! But sadly, I have yet to encounter this webserver and his woeful tale. I have only seen the generic "Page Not Found" error. Maybe it is because I was typing in a profile manually and not looking for a discussion? But I also found a discussion that was deleted... Sadly, I have not encountered unexpected humor but it would surely make my day. "Humor by-pass surgery?" Last time I checked, I haven't gone through any "surgery" so I would have to answer no!

LOL! If you have never had surgery, then I think that you definitely do not need to worry about having accidentally had "humor by-pass surgery". I was not sure how I ended up on the error page, but there were a few other users nice enough to post links that will take you to the error page that I was talking about. These links are on the first page of this discussion. If you do not have the time or patience to wait while the poor little web server types out his woeful tale, then somebody also posted that for everybody to read. It really is pretty funny, although it definitely would be sad if it was happening to a real person. I just happened to need a laugh the day I found this, and it really brightened my day. I love it when that happens!

I have to say that I don't believe that any other site including FB could possibly be as much fun as mylot! So, if this discussion doesn't prove it then I don't think anything will! I love all of you guys "well, the ones that are my "personal friends anyway" that have partaken in this particular discussion because I really needed this, especially today! If you go to the first page of this discussion and read some of the responses by other users, a few of them put links in their responses that will take you to this error page. One user, The_Lamb_Lies_Down even copied the entire error message and posted it as a comment in this discussion for those of us that did not have the patience to sit here and read while the poor web server typed out his entire message. I have to agree with you that humor and especially laughter is a wonderful medicine for the soul, but I also believe that it is good for the entire body. In fact, there have even been studies that have suggested that laughter not only reduces stress but also has other health benefits that aide in improving the quality and length of a person's life.
